Okay.

They are, in essence, trying to play the way Bolton wanted us to play, but with a bit less KPP talent, better users, and much more agro to compensate for their deficiencies. At half time, they got in our faces and smashed us hard, and we responded so they did it again after the 3 quarter time break even harder. They went in knowing that we've been folders to that kind of thing in the past, that no matter how badly they've been going or well we've been travelling, they could beat us up around the ball with a bit of physicality and we'd just let ourselves be bullied. Our response to their aggression in the third term shocked them a bit, and so they hit us harder; the most encouraging thing for me about the game is that not only did we not allow that bullying play to distract us or inhibit us, we actually started hitting them harder, nailing them in marking contests, tackles, bumps. They kept getting up sore, Plow's body spoil on O'Meara was beautiful, Jones absolutely poleaxed a few blokes whilst marking, and Cripps, Doc, Stocker, Ed, Owies, Fogarty all smashed them in the tackles.

Doc on the wing has been working, as has Williams behind the ball. Murphy was moving about the most freely he has in years, but the difference between the third quarter and the rest of his game of late is entirely that in the third term he beelined the ball as opposed to pretending to go for the ball to draw a free. Stocker is moving better, and looking more comfortable, and we're finally starting to see some synergy between the smalls in the back half to the midfield; Doc working with Williams, Saad and Stocker, and Walsh working with Cripps, Ed, Murphy, Stocker, Setterfield, and Doc. We're still breaking down going inside 50, though.

At the end of things, this is what we need to be doing. It doesn't matter if it's ugly; it doesn't matter if we play poorly or the opposition bring us down to their level; it doesn't matter how smashed we were with the inside 50 count or the clearances or the contested ball.

What matters, completely, is winning.

We have been a club and a team that has forgotten how to win, and it has shown over the past few years. How many games have we 'honourably lost'? How many times have we been overrun or only just fallen short? Then there's the 3 point wins, the 8 point wins, the 4 point wins; hardly the most convincing on the scoreboard, were they? We did not know how to hold a lead or to maintain one. We did not know how to overrun someone and keep going. We did not know how to react to being challenged by a lesser side physically, and so we melted.

But we didn't yesterday. Yesterday, we consolidated, pushed our lead back out, and we brought home a comfortable win. Was it pretty? Eh; some of the early game was pretty, and we made scoring look extremely simple sometimes (and like pulling teeth others). But the game itself was not a pretty game, because it was determined by pressure and who would be capable of sustaining their attack on the ball without losing their nerve. We now have a number of players who are willing to get their hands dirty but are capable of some pretty clean ball movement, and it's them that won us the match.

The last half was the best we have defended for long time - can we do that for four qaurter we will see -- but parks has a lot to work on especially reading when to sag off and impact the aerial contest . But you can't doubt his endeavour

Cracking hit aside he needs to get better in the air. Doesn't halve contests well enough atm.

I am very quickly becoming a big fan. Exactly the type of player we need in the mix. A different type of personality, tackles hard and doesn’t take a backward step. Similar physique and may well be Frazer Brown part II.

You vastly overestimate players intelligence to think that they knew (or didn't know) that it was his first goal.
Most on here didn't know at the time till a few tried to make it out to be something.

Hmmmm, I’d suggest that football clubs are intensely competitive places where there is a pecking order that is tested weekly. I believe they know precisely who is ahead of who and who has done what, when and how. Again, I say, I am a fan of Stocker, love his aggression and poise.
I wasn’t trying to stir the pot just point out that behaviour around him looks NQR.
Anyway, I’m tapping out on this one. Go Stocker, Go Blues!

Hawks are absolutely sh*t. And Clarko knows it so he stacks the backline. Makes for ugly watching. It’s why they’ve only been pumped twice in 10 games - his game style mostly prevents being pumped and.....winning.

Smart coaching really -- nothing demoralises young players than getting pumped often -- some of those GWS guys that started in that era must be very mentally strong ..sheedy and Williams did a good job getting them through it ..

Agreed, Newman is a better option than Williamson, and the switch of positions of Williams for Docherty has worked wonders. There's still room for improvement but it looks better.

Firstly, I don’t think co-captains works, and I believe it has the potential to cause confusion if one Captain gives one set of instruction, and the other, another. Conversely each may think the other has it covered and no instruction is given.

Secondly, Because of his leadership qualities. He has a wise head - far beyond his years, he inspires and he is so professional the way he deals with everything, I’m positive that he has the exact type of character that can shoulder the responsibility and not let the pressure affect his game.

The ease with which he speaks to the media without ums, errs, and retoric, the preparation the others say he puts into his game, the way he dealt with being the no.1 pick, his Footy smarts and how he’s played in his first and subsequent years... Also, he has the right balance between knowing when to lift and take control, and when to give the ball off and trust his teammates. Unlike Cripps, he doesn’t try and do it all himself.

These are rare qualities in someone so young, and you have to take a punt.
Crippa & Doc (more so Crippa’s) game have suffered as per your concern, and Walsh may free them up to play their own games.

Some personalities thrive on leadership (Joel Selwood springs to mind, although he has a very different type of character), and I don’t think there is anyone else other than Weitering that could do the job.

I may be totally wrong, but that kid has a special blend of ability and mental strength that I don’t think anyone else in the team has.

Once in a generation type player.

You don't "have to take a punt".

A horrible game of footy between 2 pretty average teams. The error count must have been through the roof.
Positives for me - We won. Will take an ugly win over an honourable loss every day of the week.
Walsh is an out and out superstar and must be given a contract extension asap.
Weitering was fantastic down back. His effort to touch one of their shots at goal was awesome. I love seeing efforts like that.
Stocker was pretty good and must be persevered with. Seems to be getting more comfortable at this level with each game.
Plowman's contest with O'Meara. Bloody sensational from Plow. Hope Teague plays that for the boys and tells them we want more of that.
Negatives - Let's face it. If we were playing a half decent team, we lose playing footy like that. Our skill errors are shocking. Delivery to the forwards was poor for most of the game.
And the huge space inside their attacking 50, so many times in the second half....we get eaten alive by good teams if we do that.
Stuff it. We won. Go Blues!!!

Look the the playing lists Clarkson & Hardwick inherited, Bolton did the hard yards developing a majority of the players in our best 22. Teague should be judged a lot more harsh than he actually has been. I think he is totally out of his depth in the role-Problem is the people that appointed him don’t want to look stupid.

Hardwick who already had Martin, Riewoldt, Rance, Grimes, Cotchin, Edwards, Astbury and Deledio on the list aged 18-22? Took Richmond 4 years to finally make a final (we all remember the day).

Clarkson is a different case, arguably stole a flag in 2008 but didn’t truely get the list going until around 2011.

Patience always wins. It’s something we haven’t had as a club for so long. Keep this core of players together and keep improving the structures around them and we will be successful.

He was good -- for someone who looks lazy check out the tracker stats . People will be surprised at his defensive speed and running .. maybe just has that naturally relaxed personality .. his game awareness sure improved in the second half also .

When are our players going to learn the more pressure they apply to the ball carrier the higher the chance of errors , Cottrell twice yesterday caused easy turnovers simply by pressuring the bloke with the pill . It doesn't require great skills just effort and that's why it's so frustrating , other teams do it to is and we turn it over easily as well . When will we learn these 1% things make a huge difference .
