Yep. There is a lot of indecisiveness about this team and it kills us. Successful teams are all about getting the ball and making quick decisions with ball in hand. It’s near impossible for defenders to defend when midfielders and half forwards mark and wheel around quickly and get it in fast to leads.

This rubbish of quick movement from the back and then hesistating or kicking it long and high to packs is so easy for defenders. Modern day key defenders live to read these sort of kicks and zone off their man to intercept.
Remember Pagan trying the pagans paddock with Fev? Bomb it to Fev,the old fool got picked apart by all the young smart coaches and the ball got walked out of defence and set up goal after goal.
Ratten did it too and Malthouse was worse. Can you remember Waite (especially Waite) calling for the ball with a hand gesture of kick it over the top? Used to drive me crazy. It can work when it’s fast play but not from a set kick.

Footy IQ is the most undervalued resource in the game.
We have very limited, across the whole playing group
Some players have literally zero

Very good point.
Paddy Dow is a fine young player who i feel is going to be a super inside midfielder in the next couple of years but that missed shot on goal! And then in the last 70 seconds he gets the ball on the defensive wing and could of dished it to outside runners but instead opts to go back inside to a player under pressure. It summed our game up to a tee. Effort was there. Skill & IQ are sadly not.

This is a gut wrenching loss for the Club. Emotionally I’ve not felt like this in a long time. The win was snatched from us with 10 seconds of playing time on the clock. When Bowes snapped I was hoping McGovern could get a finger nail on the ball.

The backline were tremendous today. Given that I thought the smaller backs played a big part in our loss against Sydney their collective effort was great today. The bookends, Jones and Weitering, have been consistently good in each game.

The players in the middle were solid today. Cripps and Walsh were outstanding. Walsh is the Rising Star this week. These two players are in the stratosphere concerning their talent. I thought they received plenty of help from Dow, Fisher, Samo, Murph and Setters.

The forward line were well below par today. Gov had a purple patch in the second and kicked 3 goals. His other three quarters were were poor. Charlie Curnow had his best game for the year however he was just too far from goals on too many occasions to give us the goals we needed. Big H had an off day. Poor Gibbo. So close today. A couple of posters denied him a game we’d be talking about.

Where did it go wrong?

I thought we let ourselves down with decision making. In a game of footy you can set up a lot of uncontested footy and look good. You can go across the ground in the back half and you can kick up the wings without much pressure however unless the oppo is lazy this is just a game of cat and mouse. Where the money is earned is that kick into the semicircle close to goal. We completely fluffed our lines in this area of the game. The captain was as guilty as his teammates in this area of the game today.

I’ve found this time of reflection therapeutic. I know in the wee small hours of the morning it’s going to hurt again.

Mondyboy I feel for your young boy. I’ve been there myself. Inconsolable about losing a game of footy. Please give him a hug from me.

Was at the game (unfortunately). Had a little bit of time to calm down and compose some thoughts:

1. Our skill levels ACROSS THE BOARD are incredibly poor. We are unable to string three passes in a row without missing a target and either turning it over, or turning it into a contest and therefore halting momentum. This is just FUNDAMENTAL stuff and is UNACCEPTABLE at the highest level.
2. It's clear that we either a) have no gameplan or b) have a gameplan that the players are unable to execute. Seeing the game live as opposed to the isolated view you get when watching on tele, it's blatantly obvious that we have absolutely no structure at all. We essentially play like school kids, just trying to move the ball forward by any means possible. Where is the overlap run? Why can't we run the ball out from the back half, with a string of handballs to players coming up from behind?
3. Our forward 50 entries are an abomination - and have been since Fevola left. Deep in the last quarter today, we had yet another opportunity to enter the forward 50 and all our talls literally just stood, unmoving, motioning the player (Murphy I think) to kick it to them - no run, no leads, no trying to turn your opponent around, no pushing off to create space, no clearing out of the area around our talls to create uneven match ups or one-on-ones at least. The ONLY player I saw lead into space during this time was Sam ****ing Walsh playing his 4th game of football at the top level. And he was ignored.
4. Further to point 3, when the ball does invariably get bombed to a massive pack and Charlie, Harry and Mitch all fly for the same mark and spoil each other, where are our players roving the ball at the base of the back or the old fashioned front and square? NO ****ING WHERE - that's where!
5. Only 4 players played with any composure today - Sam Walsh (game 4), Jacob Weitering (very impressive), Liam Jones (very impressive) and SPS. Every other player simply threw it on the boot or handballed to the first Carlton player they saw with no regard as to what would happen after that. Dow was one of the worst culprits, but he certainly wasn't alone. We simply panic, or the players have been instructed to play on at all costs with little regard to the consequences of their actions. It's DUMB football.

I've been a big fan of Bolts since he was appointed, and I believe that he is an excellent DEVELOPMENT coach, but I'm seriously starting to doubt his ability to coach a team on game day. The lack of basic skills and complete and utter absence of anything resembling structure, strategy or game plan is extremely worrisome. If this continues any goodwill will soon evaporate and the playing group will be broken. The kids will have a losing culture ingrained into them and they will play without passion and just go through the motions. If this keeps up our guns will soon look elsewhere for some success (and seriously, who could blame them). I was bullish on us at the start of the year. Now I'm seriously concerned for this rebuild and whether or not it is stillborn.

Troubling times ahead unless a lot of things change VERY soon.

Dow is like a young Kylo Ren. So much raw untapped ability and potential to be a game-breaker. But he needs a ton of refinement and mentoring/coaching to ensure he reaches it, rather than drifting to the dark side.

We need a proper midfield coach.

Why the hate for Plowman? Did his job in my view. They all did down back. The backline is not our problem.

Agree.

And quite frankly, Lobbe was silver servicing the mids in the 3rd quarter.

If people bother to watch the game, Witts was put forward and 2 metre Peter went into the ruck.

Wasn’t Lobbes fault the mids couldn’t deliver by foot.

We have a more talented team than Gold Coast yet they are 3-1 and we are 0-4. Why?

Losing to the Gold Coast Suns has clearly caused frustration, but once the Blues win their first game then the sensation will be elation, confidence goes up and there'll be better concentration. When we lost our first two we wanted an investigation, some said drop AMT but Woosha showed that he was patient, there's so much talent at the Blues, and when we play you we usually lose.

That was a clear mark and a TERRIBLE play on call. Rubbish umpiring intervention right there. If the umps deliberately put the whistle away that is disgraceful. That was a fair mark any day of the week and at any stage of the game.

I’ve got a feeling the mark would’ve been paid if Jones were a forward

I don’t hate Plowman I just think he’s a liability in today’s game. He plays same position as Tom Stewart , see the difference. One is clumsy, cumbersome, a poor decision maker, a slow decision maker, a poor kick of the ball but has good endeavour and tries very hard.....the other is Tom Stewart.

Our player development is coming along okay but our game plan is putrid.

That is what will be the end for Bolton if the end does come.

If we dish that up for the next 18 weeks we will not win a game.
You can have the most brilliant game plan but if players fumble and do not hit targets with confidence, then it is always going to that much more difficult. Too many of our players fumble and have sub standard foot skills. Can anyone name a midfield/forward player who has quality disposal? SPS? And that might be drawing a long bow. Sad days when professional footballers cannot execute the basic skills. Those are the coach killers.

Bolton and selection committee must go.
Time after time, wrong team gets picked. 4 tall forwards and the ball ket getting kicked to Gibbbons - absolutely pathetic.
We were 10 x more talented than Gold Coast list today but got out coached and had no structure/game plan to move the ball forward.

I hope we are already in Sam Mitchell’s ear for next year.

Bolton is the issue , long bombs to Gibbons !!

Some peoples reaction to this game is embarrassing! Bowes kicking that goal doesn't change a thing, Brendan Bolton is simply not a good enough coach. If you ask me, Woosha is a terrible coach, yet he managed to win three games with a VFL team!! The last time we kicked a hundred points was in 2016, that might be the most embarrassing stat I have ever seen from an AFL team. 2015 was supposed to be the absolute rock-bottom, yet we've managed to out-do ourselves. The skills are not even VFL standard, I didn't see three kicks strung together yet that seems to be the game play, kick it around until we turn it over or until we can bomb it down to a 173cm player instead of the 4 (four) key talls.

I feel you've just won a bet for posting on our board with a certain number of words that end in ation.
