Autopsy Richmond v Fremantle - Roast, toast and changes

Roast:

* Freo supporters and their hypocrisy. They were labelling us sooks when we complained about the umpires in our clash earlier this year. 26-21 free kicks Freo's way, numerous dodgy calls that influenced the game. (Goal-line umpire, Not nominating a third man up in the last quarter that resulted in Ballantyne's match winner, even though Grigg got penalised for the same thing earlier in the game, etc.). And here we are 2 months later and they are crying over the game where the free kick count was 22-15. I said on their board after that game that we couldn't touch them in the second quarter and got the response "It's our home game. What did you expect?" Well, to those whinging about yesterday "It's OUR home game. What did YOU expect?"

* Dusty in the first quarter not capitalising. Should have kicked 2 easy goals from 15 meters out, and had a set shot from an uncontested mark that he went half hearted at in the goalsquare. He had a great game, but should have had an even better game.

* Jack's complaining to the umpires. Yes, they may have missed a free kick to you Jack, but lambasting them for it is going to make the situation worse later on.

Toast:

* Trossman's most complete game for the RFC. Intercept marks, spoils, rebounding, ACTUALLY hitting targets and more importantly KEPT HIS FEET ALL GAME. This game just highlights why Dimma and Co. persist with him.

* Cotchin's return to form. Absolutely brilliant yesterday and more importantly, stood up when he needed to. 34 possessions, 75 odd % Disposal Efficiency and kicked a clutch goal.

* Dusty, despite his failure to capitalise in the first quarter, had another 4 quarter effort, and is really starting to show the benefits of another pre-season. Hopefully 2014 is the year he can sustain it through EVERY game.

*Our pressure. We out Fremantled Freo. We played the game Ross Lyon WANTED to play, but couldn't as we denied them possession and clean disposal. We are the one's who normally have our gameplan used against us (Geelong and North this year), so it is about time we used a team's against them.

Roast
Ellis seemed scared to me and was very jittery. Always took the safe option (either back or across to a free player) rather than trying to move the ball forward and take a risk by foot.

Martin missed those two easy goals early then tried to make up for it by kicking the impossible goals the the last. Disappointing from the young potential star.

Toast
Coaches & Players for planning and then executing a difficult, accountable strategy to beat the Dockers at their own game.

Rance was a contested marking machine. Chaplin has given him the confidence to go for the mark rather than punch because he knows he now has support.

Vickery took many strong contested marks when they tried to kick the ball long to 'safety'.

Tuck in for Foley

While the free was there, a hand was on the shoulder, it was a little soft. But a free is a free.

High contact is deemed anything above shoulder height. Given the tackle was around the shoulder, letter of the law states that it is a free kick. Not sure why they are lambasting Cotch for being soft. It was a poor tackling technique from Hill. Anyway, the Cotchin free was more a free kick than the Mayne one at half forward when Jackson tackled him around the arms, and Mayne bent forward, shifted his weight and tried to shrug Jackson, and Jacko's arm slid high.

Tough tough week at the selection table me thinks.

I dunno what was up with Foley as the sub... much prefer he plays from Q1.
Grigg was good... he had lost a bit of form and that probably waranted his green vest last week but he ran and spread very well yeterday IMO + tackled well. (7)
White did so well on Hill as a stopper that he should get a crack at one of Sydney's movers at some point.

Tuck will be very handy in the clinches v Sydney so must be very close to an automatic 'in' but at who's expense?

I don't want to drop any of Vlastuin, Conca or Ellis.

Mmmmmm - problem.

Sorry but that free to Cotchin was piss weak, even I can admit that

Agree - had the teams/circumstances been reversed we would have been howling! Very lucky... they miss a hundred like that most weeks.

The thing with Cotch is that he get's burried plenty of times whilst making the play and going for the ball without getting the whistle so in this case it was OK.

Handy goal but! :p

I got a theory they wanted to start Matt White for is 100 games and Foley put his hand up to start sub for him.

I also think they probably want to reduce his workload a bit because of his injury history.

That's all Hardwick can do - win more games than the previous year and every year he has done that since coming to the club
Even including 2010, the year in which Richmond was the worst team since Fitzroy v.1996. It's been a long time since we've had four years of steady and consistent improvement. The best part is I feel in some areas we've gone backwards from last year - That just leaves room for further improvement!!
Go Tiges!!

Was looking around on the Freo forums and saw this:

"Feeling pretty angry with the umps and the overly inbred arrogant Ninthmond flog supporters, but despite that will try to find a couple of pluses in the gloom:

1. A game on the G under our belts - for I think 6 or 7 of our guys that was their first game for Freo at the G - good for them to get that experience in the bag, and to see how the ground plays - I thought we really struggled with the sun, and also showed abysmal judgment on the depth of the pockets and the breadth of the wings, hopefully we learn from that and are better in our next game at the G. I don't think it is right that any club should have to wait until round 17 to play their first game at the G, given the amount of finals footy played there.
2. Guuu - really ran hard all day, showed some attacking flair and was also hard at it defensively. his goals were a great reward for his off the ball run and persistent second and third efforts.
3. Hannath - played really well for the first three quarters, give him another two seasons alongside Sandi and Griff and he will be a great tall utility, like we have been searching for for many years.
4. Misplaced arrogance of the Richmond fans - they finally win one against a top eight side (a depleted side but still top 8) and suddenly they have won through to the finals and are a lock for the granny. Arrogant, rude and wingeing hacks.
5. Walters - how many times was he down back in our back 50 making crucial smothers or tackles?? Really loved his low-key, hard work approach today - no histrionics, calling out to the umps or lairising - gifted player who has seen how natural gifts can be accentuated beyond all measure by sheer hard work, effort and resilience.
6. MJ - very good running it out under pressure most of the day, stood up well man on man in Luke's absence, and also had decent judgment when spoiling the kicks coming in. Very good footballer just keeps growing in maturity and focus.
7. Dawson - was very composed most of the game, and showed more speed and pace off the mark than I can remember. His 20m closing speed is actually quite good. Not ever really going to be able to hold down a #1 defender possie, but is a very, very good #2/#3 backman.
8. Sheridan - I can see why so many Vic clubs are after him, he has solid strength and his skills are reasonably good for a second year player, plus he has pace and inside ball winning ability.
9. Mundy, Fyfe, Barlow and Zaaarke all had shit days, and yet we still found a way to get the ball inside 50 for much of the first 3 quarters. If we can keep developing the second tier players like Guu, DePig, Walters, Ibbo and Spurr, we will have great list depth over the next couple of years.
10. Ross's demeanour and focus - despite how schizenhowsenly buptkus we were playing, he kept just wryly smiling, keeping his emotions under control and not trying to be a club legend like so many other head coaches do"

Now seriously, the amount of complaining. It's almost like Richmond was the villain for winning the game. Plus some Freo supporters are complaining about the umpires. What about in PERTH!!! Both WA sides get a lot of free kicks. But ohhh noooooo the supporters from dockerland just wanna whinge about Richmond. I'm sick of it.

On the Couch has Mike complaining about our disposal and hitting targets on Saturday. I noticed the commentators on the replay were saying the same thing. I was at the ground and unless I was dreaming, it was seriously windy. Was it not? Freo were missing targets, we were missing targets. People were spraying kicks and misjudging marks because it blustery as all hell! It's like the commentators never went outside. There was sunshine so automatically it was "a perfect day for football".

Thought there must have been a breeze at ground level as both teams were struggling with kicking accuracy. Couldn't feel much of it on Q deck though.
