Autopsy Round 1, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Port Adelaide

I'm worried it's more related to his injuries. I'd never question his desire but he was a real weak spot today.

It’s his decision making - wants to play loose and be an interceptor. He’s actually a good intercept mark, but he routinely leaves his man, usually the oppositions main key forward. Simpson needs to have a firm word ASAP.

Gov copped a hit today though, which means he’ll probably miss next week, so Barrass’s Gov impersonations will probably continue.

I’m very uninspired by Ginbey. I’m yet to see anything of elite potential except for him looking a thousand bucks. You could argue he’s not being used properly, but you look at his draft class and the ones who will be elite all just have already established themselves to be exceptional in a particular area of their game. I really hope I’m wrong….
Yeah it's a worry ...has all the physical attributes and did some okay things but really if you are going to be a midfielder you need to get your hands on the pill..multiple times....really worried he doesn't seem to have the footy smarts required for a top line midfielder.

I hope we are both wrong

You can see the difference with Reid and Ginbey

Reid does the little things well. He looks smooth, composed, draws the man well, ground pick ups, clearances, frees up team mates, little shimmies when he knows he is about to be tackled; He just looks like he has played midfield for a while and is very good at it.

Ginbey still looks like he needs to learn the ropes. He has the physicality yes, but not the nous and experience and deft touches, movements etc. Looks a bit like a headless chook.

Having said all that, Ginbey has one of the best work ethics and so i think he will still make it.

Wrong about Edwards. Liked his touch in close.
Was surprised by some of Edwards stats.
  • Highest average speed on the ground - 9km/hr average
  • Highest average speed in attack on the ground - 8.7km/hr
  • Second most distance covered on the ground - 13.2kms
  • Covered the most distance at high speed - 2.3kms
  • As many disposals as Kelly & Reid - 16

+ We look better with Gov out there. A setting presence and still prepared to put his body on the line

+ Reid looks ready to explode already. You just know he’s going to absolutely dominate once we start playing better as a team

+ Brockman had some nice moments I thought

- Barrass has been a great servant but must seriously be considering giving it up. Can barely get the ball below his knees and was outpointed by Dixon at every contest

- Our inability to trap the ball in our forward 50 was frustrating. Need to stick those tackles and stop the opposition from quickly rebounding

Was Cole really that bad today? Thought he was one of our better defenders honestly. Used the ball pretty well and also defended well from what I saw.
Thought both Cole and Luke Edwards had pretty solid games.

Edwards is slow but doesn't seem to panic which kind of makes up for it. He can add something to the midfield with the more fleet of foot Reid, Hewett, Ginbey etc around him.

Positives:
  • Reid just oozes class has tricks has campaigner about him what's not to like had to get tagged he was going so well early.
  • Waterman continued his good off season was one of the few leading targets that had presence and impact.
  • Gov was good we miss him so much when he doesn't play just reads it so well and always puts his body on the line pity a few more senior players don't take a leaf out of his book.
  • Chesser had some moments when he came on something to work with
  • Brockman has skills just got to find his way but promising
-3rd qtr was good

Negatives:
-Andrew Gaff never again should have retired last year. Simpson and coaches how are you playing him over Chesser absolutely pathetic.
  • Tom Barass absolutely woeful. Dixon always owns us and again today was no exception. Expecting a response
  • Jack Darling again another that needs to pack his bags. (Depth option only for mine. Great career but its not about you anymore Jack. Gotta play Maric and get games into him)
  • Coaching. Port have 3 of the best kickers out of defensive 50 (Burton, Houston and Farrell) in the comp but continually let them take an extra 10 to 15m under no pressure to chisel a 50 metre pass lace out over our defensive zone to effectively give away walk in goals. Not good enough and literally no adjustments made
  • Connor Rozee plays for Port and not us (Class above)
  • No Duggan in midfield just not clean enough better at half back where he has more time to use it

Said this last night in the gameday thread:
Having watched the Giants v Roos game today, was thinking if we held up like they did I'd not be too disappointed. Kept it to around 30pts until midway through the last...but on re-evaluating - despite the Roos actually playing quite well, excellent debuts from their new picks (Duursma in particular) - if it wasn't for goal kicking accuracy discrepancies, the Giants probably should have won by more like 70-80. Now I'm...😨

And weirdly both games panned out pretty much the same - right down the "should've been 70-80" part.

The main difference I felt was that Norths 13.4 meant that when they did a good thing, there was reward for it. They'd get around as a team and get to feel like "this is not that bad", while for us it felt like almost every time we did something genuinely good to get a shot on goal, we'd kick a point and the wind would come straight back out of the sails.

In particular would have been nice had either one of Petch or Brockman kicked goals after their one-man efforts, and there were a couple of other teams plays as well that could have been real team lifters but always seemed to end in a point. Made the difference between a game where for North it felt like they were never quite out of it, while for us it felt like constantly we were hanging on for dear life.

Anyway, hope they keep it up and get reward for effort next week - a bit of belief in their own ability as a collective would do wonders!

Gyms are full of strong blokes, few have Reids footy talent. Its the talest we need more of.

What's the worst case with Ginbey if he doesn't pick up the midfield smarts?

Not everyone can play midfield, whether it's the skills the player has or the ones he lacks. Sheppard, Waters, Butler, Wirrpanda, etc etc were all top players who had stints in the midfield but ultimately played their best footy elsewhere.

With early draft picks coming our way for probably 2-3 more years, plenty of opportunity to load up on actual midfielders if Ginbey's best ends up in defence.

Interesting. Suggests that although he isn't quick, he's fit enough to go at his max most of the time. And smart enough to get in good positions.

I think he's a player who would be very useful in a better team. He's not a game breaking player and probably never will be, but he's reliable and level-headed. You know what you're going to get from him. We tend to focus on the gun players, but every team competing for the flag will have a few of those. The difference is usually in who has the best bottom 5 in the best 22.

I suspect he may play a Master role. problem is at the moment it is an un-needed role as the mids are being belted.

I think it’s a legitimate concern for TB, seemed to fly for very few marks today.

From what I have been told the back and neck issue is much more severe than even Tom spoke about, particularly from a footballing sense. Barrass has a genuine top 2% intellect and I really wouldn't be surprised if he was forced to or took retirement much earlier than the end of his current contract as he can do so much outside of football.

I was in Perth for a couple of meetings and a dinner a few weeks back and the Barrass to Sydney trade was discussed, particularly as I didn't hear anything major about it whilst over east last year. I was told that it really wasn't but it was irrelevant as Barrass was highly unlikely to pass the physical, particularly at Sydney as they are very, very thorough.

Am I the only one thats willing to give Ginbey at least till the year before writing him as a mid?

It's a bit odd. He's getting written off (as a mid) quickly despite being in the poorest side in the competition. There's a bit of an idea in footy circles that if you're a top 20 pick you're either an elite mid or KPP.

Even if he doesn't make it as a CBD player there's another 10 positions on the ground where he could be elite. It's frustrating coz there's a few posters that seem to resent others being impressed by his preparation levels which is all you really have to go on regarding preseason anyway.

It's lame. To reference a similar impatience Sheppard looked absolutely lost in his first few years but developed into an elite defender which we continue to struggle to cover despite not having him for 2 seasons now.

I said this a couple of weeks ago (and got blasted by some clown for it), but Ginbey needs to learn how to win his own ball if we want him to end up as a midfielder.
I would just play him in the midfield as much as possible (given his age) for the year and hope it clicks for him, he's got all the tools to be a good player, just needs to put it together.

Totally agree and whilst Ginbey may not be a natural mid like Harley, he is only in his second year, first game of the year and has already shown last year he can play mid pretty well. Yeo was hardly a natural mid early days too. If he was surrounded by some talent (and yes, Yeo and Kelly played but I actually thought they were underwhelming yesterday, although not bad), he would be able to grow into the role. He also attended far fewer center bounces than you would expect.

People write off young talent so quickly. In most teams, apart from the few freaks (i.e. the Harely's), guys in their second year may not have even played a game of AFL yet.

Not all all, and the "Ginbey is shizen" posts are very premature. He's played a year of AFL in the worst side in the comp since arguably the Bears era, and people are mad because he hasnt turned into Daniel Kerr 2.0 yet?

Get your hands off it. Let the kid develop FFS.

Strange midfield mix in R1 given the intention to prioritise youth and development. Duggan attending the most centre bounces is a head scratcher. He was supposed to be swapping with Reid (mid and back) but it seems like they've abandoned that and maybe given Ginbey that role instead.

Whether it was overwhelming Reid with all the structure and zone chat, or maybe they saw how stifled he was in the first preseason game versus the second when he was plugged in on ball more, that they've now opted to play him in the guts and go rest one out in the goal square and if we can get the ball in your direction then just play on instinct.

He does need to learn to win his own ball, but currently he is actually a very good 1st receiver (albeit his disposal can improve with his composure) and decent defensively.

He looked ready to start busting out of tackles yesterday at times, and as we know from our current performance broken tackles followed by clean disposal to a team-mate puts the opposition under all sorts of pressure.

I feel like they need to give Ginbey a license to hunt the ball at at least a few stoppages each game. The odd bit of "see ball, get ball" can do wonders for confidence and gives Ginbey a chance to leverage his strengths.

He looks to have been given defensive assignments when he gets a run in the middle and he gets blocked off his man way too easily atm and looks like crap. Not really his fault, as structurally we are the worst side at stoppages by a very handy margin. Without BBW going ham in the middle yesterday it would have been a clearance slaughter.
