What was that free in the third?
Carlton get a free, the Carlton player plays on,gets pinged but Stevic blows the whistle and let's the Carlton player have another go,confusing decision.

Was a mark, Weitering thought his team mates said touched so he played on... should never have been called back and the club should complain about it.

The umpires missed a reportable hit on Vlastuin in the middle while looking directly at it, that lead to a Carlton goal.

HTB was ridiculous against us.

We got one or two iffy decisions but they got about 10.

Felt like we should have won by heaps more and a very enjoyable night. Dusty unbelievably good. Made everyone look second rate.

I'm reserving judgement though until we play a few teams that bring a bit more defensive pressure to the table.

And I think it's pretty obvious that our backline is still full of panic merchants, which needs to be the number one priority at seasons end.

Quicker decisions to move the ball - Tick.
Handball chains - Tick.
Run & carry - Better.
No chip chip - Tick.
Long bombs into the forward line - Not so good. Forwards need to lead up & players lower there eyes. Good sides will pick us off.
Tackling - Tick.
Defenders pushing up to high - Not so good.

This is where we lacked Lennon or Lloyd leading hard at the ball carrier.... delivery in was quick but sometimes haphazard and not clean. A third semi-tall who can lead is something we need. Lennon could, Lloyd at a stretch. A fit Lids would be good!

Positive
- Banked 4 points and a good start to the season.
- Dustin Martin making a point that he is uber elite and should be held in the same regards to the like of Dangerfield, Ablett and Fyfe. He is single handedly the most exciting player in our club.
- Vibrant new gameplay which is fast, exciting and high scoring. Though it seems that this style of fast attacking comes at the expense of our defence.
- New generation of kids are exciting. Butler, Rioli and Castagna really made a stand saying that they DO belong in the top 22.
- The new faces made a positive impact on our gameplay. Nank despite not dominating the HO he was serviceable contributing 2 goals and being a really strong presence around the ground, Prestia was hardworking and very intelligent and Caddy whilst started slowly endes up finishing strongly.
- Top of the ladder and hearing the team sing our song.

Negative
- Leaky defence and General Rance looking out of sorts. Not sure if it is a result of lack of work by the coaches on the defensive structure of the game or something else but if we were to play Top 8 teams, our defence will get slaughtered.
- I was watching it on TV and I could not help but notice the amount of empty chairs in the cheerleading section. What is the deal?
- Some of the second tier players - Houli, Griffith (despite some magnificent long bombs to the top of the goal swuare), Hunt etc didn't exactly fire up and play a good game.
- Blues banner. What is the deal with the atrocious message? Does not even make sense and does not even hold a candle to the wittiness and punniness of the WBD banner writer.

Changes
- No changes.

I actually was trying to be super neutral toward the umpires last night, where normally I suffer from feeling our team is more hard done by than others, like all fans.

But last night, the umpires friggen reamed us.

We got paid holding the ball against on a number of soft ones, how about Castagna being tackled mid-air ffs? There was a point where Caddy was trying to pick up the ball in the center and Murphy was holding his arm which I saw the umpire go to blow his whistle and then stopped. This was during their semi comeback.

They got away with a quite a bit in the centre square.

Anyway, 25 frees to Carlton and 12 to Richmond, enough said.

Umpiring was a non-factor last night and it usually isn't. Crap teams usually complain about umps rather than own up to the mistakes their own players make.

Mistakes I saw:
Free kick against Daisy for a throw - live I thought throw, replay confirmed handball - 1 goal for us
Deliberate against Gibbs... if it was right, then McIntosh should have been pinged as well. Either way it's a missed or unwarranted free kick.
Holding the ball missed that would have gone to us... That one went down the other end for a goal for them.
The decision not to allow the play-on when Weitering marked it late in the third. He played on and handballed it as he thought the ump had called play on but he hadn't.... not sure what to make of it. Arguably could have been 50 against Ellis...

Rest of them were very line ball. We will have to overcome the stigma of being a crap team. Better teams seem to get the rub of the green in tight times as if they are expected to execute better in pressure situations. Doubt there are stats to support that theory or debunk it but that's what I have noticed over the years.

Should put my hand up too and say that I umpired for more than a decade up to a level that was semi-elite. I was at the same level as Stevic, Donlon and co before I discovered my love of alcohol and big nights out  FWIW I do actually feel as though Matty Stevic does not like us at all.... I must have beat him in a time trial and he wasn't happy about it or something as he rarely seems to give us the 50/50s...

And comedy value. Seriously the way he broke away from that pack in the 4th (I think) reminded me a bit of lids...... until the kick off the left. ......dribbled 5 metres at 90 degrees..... :(
Good first up game, George could easily have had 4. First goal of the season though.

Did he have 2 goals 4points or 5 points?

I'm sure JR won't tell him to go the left foot snap again!!!
