Review Round 12, 2024 vs Carlton

I keep saying it, but our list is full of flakey flanker types.

Look good when the going is good, but struggle when the heat is on.

Matt Rendell after our 2021 PF exit did his summary of our list on FootySA and he said we had too many pretty footballers, who look good when the going is easy.

Since the end of 2015 I have said every year we will win at least 10 games and most years I expect in the 12 to 15 games range. Ive never pissed my pants like some on here and said we will be bottom 4.

In fact the only years we won 10 games was 2016 when we were decimated with injuries and basically played our Sanfl defence for most of the season and 2021 after our 0-5 start.

We are going to win 12 to 15 games again this year, but we won't go past the 2nd week of finals. With a bit of luck, we might make it to a PF, but we won't win it.

We have built a list that is able to win enough games, but not the big games when the expectations are big.

We need to recruit a few mongrel bastards who are driven to win, to ever win a flag.

I am an unabashed fan of Brayden Maynard. I'd love to have a couple of players like him in our team.

I read people on here criticise Boak and Wines go on about being a good human first and then they piss their pants whenever they see Maynard do mongrel acts on the field.

We wont win a flag until we get a few mongrel bastards into the side. Just look at how many we needed in 2004 to finally knock off arguably the greatest ever side in the AFL.

And a coach, president and ceo with a bit of mongrel in them would help so that they back up the recruiting of, and the actions of the mongrel bastards.
I concur with all the above but in fairness, SPP is like the khan of mongrel, Rioli is well versed and both are on the pine. Butters is all mongrel, Bergman has it, the dodgy Italian concreter (Lachie J) screeds it, Darce bleeds it, Lord is going to be betrayed then crucified for it, The Great Visentini will be known for it, we got mongrel, but the drivers aren’t on the deck. Dixon is getting the ‘Ringling Circus’ retirement plan for it. We also just had to put to the boneyard Jonas and Lycett.
I do believe we need more mongrel but it ain’t happening without tutelage.

ports list is good but hinkley has to be the worst coach in the game is hilarious

I am not sure our list is as good as we think. We have 3-4 consistent performers but the rest are hot and cold when those 3 or 4 consistent players have an off game the others are not able to step up. Butters, Houston, Rozee and Drew are reasonably consistent but the rest are too hot and cold.

Last night was a good example as to why I think we are an over rated outfit that will at best finish 5-8th. Even if we make the finals many of us know we will struggle to win a final while Ken is calling the shots.

Posted from the depths of despair.

Very soft effort , not many capable of playing contest physical footy.
Not a soft effort by most of our team, though I was most unhappy with Todd's insipid efforts.

No, I felt all game that Hinkley was outcoached around the contest, all over the field, not just the mids. Carlton saw ball get ball, then get it to someone. Ports were constantly second to the ball, ineffective tackles quite often.

Carlton, even in high-pressure situations, had someone ready to receive the ball, whereas we just looked unorganised and, not scared, but not brave enough to go all in to win the ball and move it on to someone in a better position.

Leads were not honoured at times, and there was very little leading happening anyway.

Lack of guts to take the shot yourself was disappointing, eg Boaky.

Sorry for the rambling rant. I am really disappointed by the inability of Hinkley to instil a hardness and pride to this team.

Regardless of multiple issues in other parts of the ground there were signs from as early as the 1st qtr in last night's game that if the blue baggers kept the pressure coming the Power defence would eventually collapse like a deck of cards.

They were getting their goals too easily well before that last term onslaught, and the damn walls were always going to break from the pressure!

This is why games like the Cats and Hawks games are so hard to enjoy now.

Because you just know that this garbage is coming. That no matter how long you wait, we will never stand up when we need to with this coach and culture.

A couple goals difference in those games and we would be sitting at 6-6, in 10th, and there might actually be in a position where there could at least be pressure to push the "nosuccession" plan forwards.

We always show just enough to **** the club out of making change, never enough to actually do anything.

I’ve seen enough to know we’ve lost the BZT/Duursma trade.
He does some decent stuff here and there but I have no confidence that he’ll stand up in a final. He’s a tall flaky half back.

More "this ones on the players" comments than I would've liked after this on the socials.

After 12 years, multiple lists, development, culture, selection, attitude, how is Hinkley not responsible for what the players put out on the field.

How on earth can people really think this doesn't rest on his shoulders?

He's not in his 3rd year with a brand new list

You either have it in you or you don’t

History shows most successful coaches were mongrel back flanker types or mongrel mids like Matthews and mid/forwards like Clarko.

There isnt much leadership down back for us at the moment.

I dont reckon there is anyone who has played for Port the last 10 years who stands out as being a potential AFL coach. Robbie Gray is smart enough to do it but he doesn't like the bullshit that goes with being a head coach so I never thought of him pursuing that career. Brad Ebert might prove me wrong.
We are missing McKenzie badly. He was our best one on one defender & a very good cover defender. A real team player, strong mentally & physically.

Yes we can all go ahead and pick they eyes out of the players. Yes, there were some mega pathetic efforts out there tonight, but, I just refuse to blame the players! Half of Carlton's side are spuds too, but they played an accountable brand of footy that constantly gave our players no room. [Hinkleyball]

This does not go well with Hinkleyball, which is all about quick ball movement, outside run, but zero pressure. There continues to be zero accountability - perennially poor players KNOW that they will get a golden pass. [Hinkleyball]

The first 3 quarters we seemed to get into scoring position time, and time again, but the ease with which they could waltz in and score was sobering. [Hinkleyball]

Then there are the constant poor selections!

I'm in the same boat. At the moment I am willing to give the players the benefit of the doubt because our coaching department is inept.

Once a new coach comes in and I can see a change in philosophy, then I will judge our playing stocks.

I'm not too concerned with our recruiters either as they have the ability to recruit players that the coach desires. It's just that our current coaches have no idea how to develop a squad.

I've been giving cats fans shit because they got flat tracked at home. Look what they have done since.

We were ok until Soldo caved in . Might’ve been fitness but once he wasn’t giving Butters and Horne Francis some good looks at it we fell away . Defence became leaky . I think BZT is one too many talls if he’s not going to intercept mark and Jones was terrible .
Dixon and Marshall were nowhere to be seen and we badly missed Rioli’s finishing .
I think we need a reset with Lord in if he shows a bit on the weekend . Teams are starting to run offf Dixon now , he can’t compete at ground level anymore . Give him a month off and then use him as sub .

Is anyone surprised, we were lucky to beat a bottom 4 side a fortnight ago, we were smashed against the cows and Collingwood and just got over the line against a pathetic St Kilda and Fremantle.
Not surprised at all. Tipped Carlton by 13, what was I thinking. Didn't bother turning up coz my team didn't bother turning up for the Crows and 3/4s of the Saints game. Totally disinterested atm coz I've seen the same shit for years.

Still completely shit house in back half ground ball. Oppo kicked about 10 goals from crumbs.

Still completely shithouse in front half ground ball. Possibly the worst brigade of small forwards ever fielded in an AFL game.

Dixon is an inanimate carbon rod and Marshall is Mr invisible. Finlayson came on the ground and immediately sulked.

Soldo got his pants pulled down. Felt like he was somehow worse than Lycetts efforts last year. Probably was injured.

I feel sorry for our midfield who are actually competitive given either side of the ground is so SANFL (or worse)
This would change if we brought in decent coaches & got rid of Kochy, cleaned out all the enablers & introduced accountability for performance. The players can be way better than this.

Soldo was never going to be able to compete for 4 qtrs. Rushed back in totally underdone. He plays with dedication, our best ruckman by a lot.
