I know he's injured but is there any news about being out for the season?

I would think anything more than 1-2 weeks makes it pretty difficult to come back this year. Wouldn't have enough time to get match fitness up in the VFL and there's no way he should be remotely considered for finals without at least 3-4 games - and good form - to support it.

That's fair speculation. I just enjoy watching him play, so it's disappointing that we may have to wait till the grand final is all.

Well considering you are happy to toot Chris Scotts horn that tells me you are willing to accept the results we have been getting - which are average.
Firstly, I haven't seen Vic Ward toot anyone's horn, however he might recognise something which you apparently don't. Average? A premiership and three preliminary finals and finals every season bar one in 7 seasons as coach and the best win/loss average of any current AFL coach. Average???
...The fact you are not offering critical thought on his coaching abilities and list management strategies proves this.
This is the Melbourne v Cats thread for Saturday's game, not the "I hate Chris Scott" thread. Why don't you toodle over there to vent your frustration instead of turning a game preview into your own personal beef. By all means continue to offer your "critical thoughts on his coaching abilities and list management strategies", but not here.
Trust me if it was for me we would have had a new coach a long time ago and not recruited over the hill spuds and injury prone players who never make it on the park. Thank the lord we got Selwood and Dangerfield. Hawkins F/S, Ablett F/S. The only top quality player who contributes consistently outside that is Duncan. The rest go missing depending on what day of the week it is. Facts.
Thankfully it was never your decision. Scott is not solely responsible for recruitment, you should know that. Scott has a major input, but it is Steven Wells who is the major recruiter and he is a club legend for his abilities. Joel Selwood was one of those "injury prone players" that we picked up under Wells, another player Daniel Menzel had no history of injuries but has had some terrible bad luck over the years, obviously its all Scott's fault. We have recently recruited some "over the hill spuds" such as Patrick Dangerfield, Zac Tuohey, Henderson oh and a bloke called Gary Ablett. I see that your venom denigrates players such as Tim Kelly, Tom Stewart and Mark Blicavs, all potential AA players this season. If I hated the coach, the players, the supporters and therefore the club as you apparently do, I wouldn't bother with whinging, moaning and generally sniveling about something I have no power over. What's your point?

I am not sure that our back line has been that good this year. While Geelong has a good record in terms of points against, we have also been playing in low scoring games where on many occasions both teams have been playing a loose man in defence. On the occasions when the numbers have been equal, our backline has struggled at times and lacked composure. Both the games against Sydney (in Geelong) & Adelaide I believe we lost mainly due to defensive errors. There is no doubt that we need Henderson or Taylor back in one of the key defensive posts & I think someone like Duncan would add the composure, class & foot skills that we need to set up our attacks out of defence.
Against Adelaide, I agree turnovers coming out defence were a big issue.

Against Sydney in Geelong we got smashed in clearances for 1 qtr and it cost us the game.

1 slightly underwhelming game does not mean that the backline has struggled.

Yes, I agree that having Taylor or Henderson (more likely) will improve the defence. As long as Taylor or Hendo are fit and in form. Which at this point in the season is highly doubtful.

I am just along for the ride. I enjoy every game that I see. Even when we lose, I enjoy the positive moments within the game. That's just me.

It's supporters like you (and me) that make this club the touchstone for mediocrity that it is today.

How is the GFC possibly supposed to aspire for greatness when there are so-called 'fans' like us prepared to accept that we won't win the flag every few seasons?

What ammo has the coach really got in seeking to fire up the boys in the three-quarter time huddle when the skipper can turn to him and say, "I've been told there are multiple fans of this club who won't totally flip out if we happen to lose this game'?

Let's face it, while people like you and me remain 'committed' to the GFC, we have absolutely no hope of ever seeing the players on the field truly chase ultimate success.

It's going to be just like it's always been. Despite the fact that we never set foot on the field or have any role in how the team is coached/structured, we'll drag them down to our level again and again.

Just like we did in '07, '09 and '11.

Oh, wait…

;)

I actually agree to some extent... while for the most part this year our backline has been quite good (imo) in some games it's been a weakness and has struggled to adapt to or contain a game that starts going against them. In a sense I guess that could be part of the learning curve of guys like Blicz, Bews, Henry, Kolo, Stewart none of who have a hugely significant amount of experience in AFL defensive systems.

I'm keen to see what getting Hendo back looks like. Concerned about either who he pushes out or reshapes the structure, though.

can't be serious

We have looked unsure down there the last two games with the return of Cam Guthrie, get him out of there.

It does seem at times that we create roles for Cam Guthrie instead of shaping him into a role that serves the team...

If he's not going to be down back then I hope we find something to do with him. Considering how well he played on Dusty last year and Scoots body being a bit unreliable I wouldn't mind turning him into a more defensive instead of attacking midfielder. Have him focus primarily on locking down on an opponent and only running off/trying to provide drive when he's confident of an opening. Currently it feels like he's pressured to attack and so goes even when its not the best option.

Constable debut and Henderson in please.
Be very surprised if Hendo isn't an inclusion. Constable's form was impressive last week, just not sure they'd risk him in such an important game or where he'd fit in if they did. He played as a mid in the twos where he performed so well but I don't see a spot for him there. Love to see him get his chance sooner rather than later.

I dont mind the idea.. I dont think Constable is as offensive as some of our mids... and he seems like he wouldn't mind it tough. Melb's mid group is a hrad nut to crack so ..an extra mid ..not such a bad thing.

Haha. Guilty.

I actually quite enjoy my power to get into Selwoods head and make him take it easy during some contests.

I am also quite aware that my willingness to ‘settle’ is exactly what makes Hawkins miss so many goals and be okay with that.

I feel that my enjoyment of watching Henry take a couple of pressure marks after earlier creating critical turnovers in the Adelaide game led directly to Buzza dropping several marks later.

And in that last quarter, the fact that Scott gave up in the box, threw his hands up in the air and said “god I don’t know what I’m doing, honestly, I never have. The only thing I know is that all these players have been washing my car really well” - that was me again because I didn’t call call Parsons for being a young inconsistent player a few weeks earlier.

Duncan is a better player than anyone in our back 6 easily. And has been for much longer.
That's not what the assertion was though.
Saying Duncan is better doesn't disprove the statement made.
