  • the BOY. Won good ball both inside and outside and had a big impact.
  • Reid went in and out of the game, but he's a special talent.
  • Barnett got some exposure
  • game plan put real pressure on GWS for a quarter and a bit
  • thought Waterman presented really well. Just couldn't convert when needed
  • Yeo was a monster
  • Barass/Gov combo is back

- I really don't rate Cole anymore whatsoever

For those that didn’t notice I thought Hough on Greene was absolutely outstanding. Particularly with the amount of time the ball spent in their half.

JJ is NOT AFL standard and one of him or Cole needs to make way for Burgiel next week.
Not sure how Cole keeps getting selected.

Pos
  • Good stuff from Ginbey - got his hands on it and showed some speed.
  • Gov/Cripps/Yeo/Hunt really trying and giving us something
  • Reid (particularly in the first)
  • Intent to take the game on more was good.
  • Hough was good
Neg
  • Basic skill errors ruining good build ups
  • Not kicking a goal for 60+ mins just makes watching these games miserable
  • The JJ mystery has been solved - boy he used it poorly today
  • Got nothing out of Williams as a forward
  • I think you are all being far far too kind to Chesser - thought he was quite bad. I get we all want him to be good but man I'm still really not convinced.
Need to see us against non-top 4 team though, I'm still not totally sure where we are at.

Darling looks almost done. Reminds me of Pavlich in his last couple of years. Still can do the odd positive thing but slow and beaten 90% of the time. I feel that Waterman could replace him permanently. Bring in big Jack Williams to give us something to kick at.

Ledwards is never going to fit in this team. He has poise but is too slow and doesn't really have a role. We could bring in Hall for him this week.
Darling worked his ass off today and helped most of our goals happen, however I tend to agree. He's not as good defensively has he used to be and he's lost a tonne of speed so can't be a leading target anymore.

LEwards looks like a Hutchings-type player to me and will be good depth as we gain more talent through the draft.

Darling may have been a real TV moment with some of these posts, every time i could pick him out he was 2 v 1 trying to make a contest. IDK if that was ball use, but man it made him look like he was just getting beat all day.

Good to see Ginbey get more touches.
Yeo back to his best, praying he can stay fit for the year.
Harley again showed plenty of excitement, but drifted in and out of the game, which is not a surprise early on in his career.

There wasn't too many players that played horrible games overall, which is funny after a big loss, but it was just the constant turnovers during most passages of forward movement that gifted them so many goals. With their skill, they weren't going to let them pass by.

Alesana if possible, could you please clip together all of the GWS goals that came within 10-15 seconds of turnovers. Would have to be half their score today.

It’s not that they don’t count, it’s just that they’re so very fixable.

As an eternal optimist I felt a surge of positivity as the clock clicked down with their score on 96 and yet to tick over 100 points for one of the few times post 2020. Then in the last 20 seconds a half dozen giants walked down the centre of Optus and kicked it to three of their team mates who had to decide who walked into the open goal.

Positives: We tried hard all day, we really did

Negatives: We are so far off the general standard of the rest of the league that even at 100% effort we still got belted by 10 goals plus on our home ground. This rebuild is going to be so long and so painful. 10 years of poor drafting, trading, development, list management and general management of the club created this hole. It is not going to be fixed in a year or two.

Well is 53 at half time according to Fox so I think half is generous by the end.

The positive is, we can improve that (even though we may not).

+ Barrass, Gov, Ginbey, Yeo until he ran out of gas all good, Kelly worked hard as did Darling.
Effort was there, pity a lot of it was wasted.

- Basic skill errors and brain dead turnovers killed us.
We have drafted players in the last 3 or 4 years who aren't equipped for today's style of game, piss poor by the recruiting staff.
Someone should tell the AFL they can call the umps off now, we are already dead.
Which players aren't equipped for the game? Ginbey and Reid were great. Chesser had a good second half after starting poorly (13 disposal second half). Hough already looks like our best half back.

Barnett needs a couple more pre seasons so I'll give him a pass. Edwards is a bit slow but we drafted at pick 50 odd for him, so not much loss

Positives +

  • WA winning the Shield outright and three peating as a consolation prize for our loss.
  • Gov was really good down back. Killed contests and looked to rebound the ball out.
  • Barrass kept it simple in spoiling at all contests an only intercepted when it was clear to do so.
  • Harley Reid continues to be a superstar. Great decision making and was strong to break tackles and looked to break the lines.
  • Ginbey one of his best games. Still lacks class and polish at times but added much needed grunt.
  • Yeo being Yeo and he made us more tougher and kicked a goal on the run.
  • Chesser worked his way into the game and attacked the lines. Made a few errors but that will hopefully cut down in the future once he's fully ready.
  • JJ looked off but had intent. Will get better once he's more match fit.
  • Hough did a great job against Greene especially that the ball lived on their half.
  • Some passages were good.
  • Duggan improved from last week. Much better as a HBF and is NOT a midfielder.
  • Waterman and Cripps worked very hard especially Cripps with his defensive running.
  • Hunt was really good with attacking and also was everywhere.
  • Brockman great with his efforts.
  • Long showed a lot of promise and got to the right areas.
  • Maric looked good in his limited time there although he was subbed in so he's fresh.

Meh =

=
Barnett just not ready for AFL yet but has got a taste on what he needs to do.
= Jamo down from last week but is still improving as a defender. Just needs to kick within his limitations such as easy kicks unless he improves his kicking ability.
= Effort was there but skill errors let the team down.
= Darling better than last week but still didn't have much impact.
= L.Edwards was decent but his lack of pace chasing was evident especially chasing their faster wingman.

Negatives -

  • Forwards still went into defence and as a result, there was no one to kick too when the team won the ball.
  • Skill errors costing us goals.
  • B.Williams is NOT a forward.
  • Smashed by Briggs in the ruck as a result they got easy first use at will putting our defence under pressure.
  • Still failed to bring the ball to ground although some of the entries are dog sh*t.

Final thoughts.

The team played two quarters and is showing improvement from last year. This is a great effort despite a 11 goal loss but it was against a potential top 4 side and we're still in rebuild mode.

I would like to see Jamo play second ruck and put Waterman down back temporarily when Bailey's off. But then it only works if our talls can bring the ball to ground.

My changes for next week.

Out: Barnett, L.Edwards
In: Burgiel, Maric
Sub: Hall

+effort was there
+Harley Reid already our best player. So much more poise and grunt than the rest of them
+The "Ginbey doesn't get enough of the ball" crew should quieten down for a week. Weirdly enough when in a role that let's him chase the ball he actually gets a bit of it, who'd have thunk it

-ve skills man, complete lack of them. Fumbles, bad handballs, kicks just so costly and so far below AFL standard.
-ve that I'm relatively happy with an 11 goal loss

A negative:
Dunno what the club was thinking giving Barnett a game after a good practice game vs an inexperienced WAFL side.
He's clearly still too skinny for the AFL and would probably still be monstered by some of the bigger WAFL rucks.
Would still be a season away from being ready for AFL.
Wouldn't feel great for his confidence being dropped after one game.

I there we need to make a role for Ledwards. There is enough to work with I think and it isn't as if we have a huge number banging the for down

Gaff's best game in some time
Harsh but funny. I think there is a role for Gaff as the sub if he can keep finding the footy at WAFL level.

Positives:
  • Ginbey really got better as the game went on
  • Gov stood up
  • Barrass got better after a terrible start
  • Harley lighting up Optus - I really hope he stays for a long time and doesn't;t get lured back to Victoria

Negatives:
  • Skill errors - especially by experienced players
  • Darling may need to find confidence in the WAFL with Gaff
  • Turnovers
  • What's going on with all the score reviews?
