Centre clearances...

Richmond 18

Port Adelaide 10

Yeah but did you look at the clearances?

We lost 5-3 in 2nd when the game was won. All three of our centre clearances were hacks forward (hopper 2, nank 1) straight to port players. The port clearances were all handballs to a teammate with a space and only one was not a clean clearance in end.

Sonsie and McAuliffe straight in.
Another good test.
With Collingwood umpiring,we win.
Yep. I agree Smasha. McAuliffe has to be a certainty in next week after his outstanding performance in VFL today. Lynch in for Fawcett (the kid looked promising yesterday). Sonsie maybe in too but who comes out? Taranto, Hopper, Ross all know they have to lift to set the example next week. I expect them to. At the moment we need to keep playing Bauer. With the kids I think Lalor and Armstrong can get though the next few weeks before needing a rest perhaps. Smillie not far away. Hopefully he plays VFL next week then perhaps Rd4 debut at G against Lions. I'll be there.

3. The next full time legit mid that was taken after Faull was Ough at 36. Murphy Reid more outside than a TT/ Hopper replacement.
This argument doesn't make sense to me as we're far worse again on the outside. When you consider that our next ranks of mids are Ross, Dow, McAuliffe and eventually Lalor and Smilie... I wanted Reid specifically because he was more of an outside player. And then I would have taken a small forward with the Trainor pick.

My theory is that they don't want to drop Hopper in his 3rd year after signing him on a 7-year super-contract. because he's not even that good in stoppage we've decided to go overweight stoppage players and avoid picking outside mids because we won't be able to get them game-time. Doubling down on big project talls (Sims) is again a way of drafting without making hard-decisions for the MC around dropping mediocre players because these huge talls take so long to develop.

My issue is that I don't think you can develop inside-mids properly when they have no-one to dish out to. So they're all going to learn the TT dump-kick because we've structurally made that the only way we can get a clearance.

Isn't Hotton both of those things.

Lalor and Smillie are both inside outside players as well. McAuliffe played much more outside today than previous, so he is obviously working on that side of his game. He was very good on the outside today because he has a good kick, is fast and strong as an ox. He will need another full season to get that ability to run continuously as he is carrying a lot of weight around, but eventually it will happen.

Eventually, the form of Hopper and maybe Taranto, can't be hidden forever, we are not a charity. If they are holding us back they will eventually be dropped. But it's rd.2 so early days.

taranto should be (managed) this week, if he's not actually injured.

Reality is this is where we are at. High/low performances for the next couple of years. And this is why i DON’T want us to look at Harley Reid. We need to bank as many top 20 picks and keep bringing talent in and turning the list over. People forget the list churn Dimma had in his first few years as a senior coach trying to get the mix right. 3 first rounders for Reid? Nope, rather 3 top 10 picks to come in rather than one bloke.
It’s R2. 21 to go. Games into kids. Not even worried.
Harley is the Harley Show. Get me some silk and grunt that plays every week for the team. Want Tigers men.

Is Horne-Francis going to be in trouble with the MRO? Haven’t heard anyone in the media mention the incident at all. Or did I not see what I thought I saw?
Once we've played them, I don't really care what happens. We get no benefit from JHF or any other of this week's opponents getting rubbed out for next week. Same with Ginbey a few weeks ago when he took out Lalor.

If anything, it often works against us. I want JHF playing against Essendon next week - I don't want those campaigners benefiting from one of our blokes getting snotted.

1. Again, you’re not fixing all the holes in our list in one draft.

2. We have enough outside players on the list already, at least enough to warrant giving them a chance before disregarding them to the scrap heap.

3. MC don’t want to drop Hopper because right now he’s best 22. Was our best against Collingwood and was very good against Carlton.

4. Whom should we have taken instead of Sims? Sims is also a type that we don’t have, a genuine forward/ ruck. We’ve had Bauer, Blight and KMac be second ruck.

5. You’re not getting a guy in the draft who is outside enough to help development of inside mids even IF what you say about needing outside mids to develop inside mids is true.

6. We’ve given long term contracts to Ryan and Koschitski (and given up draft assets for the latter) and both are in the VFL. Whilst contracts are vastly different, don’t think MC are comprised in any way based on existing contracts.

I see your point GOJJ, but I’ve just read the MRO have called it a melee and fined 6 players including 3 of ours over it. Horne-Francis punched a bloke (Short I think) who was already lying on the ground. How is that judged as only a melee?

You can be certain if the reverse had happened our player would have been given weeks irrespective of causing an injury or not. Dangerfield elbows people and just gets a fine. The whole MRO and tribunal are an absolute farce.

Rant over.

We just gave a 7 year deal to Balta (effectively giving up pick 2 to do it) and have no space for him in the backline.

Then we have Koschitzke, Ryan, Fawcett, Colina, Hayes-Brown, Faull, etc. on our list and while some of them are far from ideal second-rucks I don't know why we have so many useless talls in general. It's why we didn't have list space for Davidson.

I would have taken 2 KPFs at the back of the first round only. So Sims would have been the replacement pick for Faull (with that pick going to Reid) and probably been a Whitlock or something.

I don't think you should ever use top draft picks on rucks, and this a pretty standard view among list managers afaict. And heaps of teams barely have second-rucks (following our lead when we won three premierships without one).

Smillie not playing 2’s yet, but not far off…Hopefully Alger and Sims push a case, maybe Gray…McAuliffe should be straight in with a good showing…
Kano, Sons were best….
I think we need Kanos strength in and under

Alger and Sims showed a bit…but I’d keep them at vfl level for development
Gray was ok…nothing that warranted selection

Would like to get McAullife in but we need to balance the kids as we can't just throw them all in or we get smashed even more.

Could justify giving Dow or Tresize a week off to bring Kane in, but could equally hold them in place and let Kane continue to build good games in the VFL.

Balta isn’t playing because of the club-imposed suspension. When he’s available in round 5 he’ll be playing. No one is keeping him out.

Calling two cat-b rookies, a player in year two after missing most of year one and a player in his first year as ‘useless talls’ is frankly ridiculous.

And no, none of those players were why we didn’t get Davidson. We didn’t go with Davidson because of the repercussions of list spots associated with having too many rookies. To say otherwise is incorrect.

Sims was also our seventh pick and in the late 20s. Not exactly a top draft pick. Also he isn’t a ruck, he’s a forward who can play second ruck which is a totally different position and one we don’t have.
