Can't be anything but proud of that effort. The boys threw the kitchen sink at it but having almost no bench was almost impossible to overcome.

There's a few "what it's" lingering because if we converted a couple of those fairly easy chances the scoreboard pressure might just have got to Freo.

But the spirit on display today - and indeed over the first three rounds - is the stuff that will propel us up the ladder.

Anyone who didn’t see undeniable talent in Hewitts game today, please vacate immediately. He hasn’t played 4 quarters at AFL yet.
There's a lot to like there.

Maybe I took it the wrong way but when he lined up for goal in the second and the commentator says "yet to kick a goal at AFL level" it really pissed me off. He played a quarter last week and was subbed in for Shury about ten minutes prior. We're about 15 games from talking about Hewett as "yet to kick a goal at AFL level".

I've been pretty 'drop Gaff' this season but his effort in that second half was immense. Slamming the run down tackles like Naitanui. Showed a lot of heart. Proud of all the boys, immense effort, really don't want to fault anyone today
Yeah. Gaff was fairly rubbish in the first but he had 2 big tackles that resulted in HTB in the space of about 2 minutes in the 3rd. Really dug in as much as he could.

The injuries suck but the blessing in disguise is we are hopefully closer to seeing Culley/Ginbey/Hewett getting alot more gametime together at AFL level. Fingers crossed Chesser's injury isn't too bad as he was starting to get involved in the second half as well and didn't look out of place.

Thought Gaff and Ginbey were pretty good in the 3rd quarter getting 10 possessions each in that quarter and 8 tackles between them. Think the old man Gaff will be around for a bit longer.

Negatives first because I need to rip the Band-Aid off

• Injuries.
• Umpires
• Finishing in front of goal- missed gettable shots at critical times. What really stings is our youngsters missed what would otherwise have been really great for morale but inexperience cost them - Long, Hewett and Chesser all had opportunities but couldn’t convert them unfortunately. Not really blaming them as such but **** it would have been nice to see them get a goal each

Positives

• Gaff showed some real leadership in the 2nd half. One of his better games and I thought the more accountable role he was given actually worked pretty well
• Hunt continues to prove a very astute pickup
• Rueben ****ing Ginbey is going to be a beast. Had a good first half but lifted further after half time to be a key driver in our comeback
• Hewett has all the attributes to be a very good player except the one he can’t get just yet - experience. Once he adjusts to the tempo of the game he’s going to be very dangerous
• Petrevski-Seton had his second very good game in a row. Looked a prime scrap heap candidate before the season started but shapes as a key piece in our front half now
• Kelly was very good again. Our best player and imo only Serong was better.
• Allen looked capable of tearing the game apart but his knee digging into the turf after that mark in the first quarter I think hampered him after 1/4 time (so this is also kinda a negative covered by the all encompassing injuries line)
• Duggan I thought had a really good game and gave us some good drive in a game where Freo were focused on shutting down Jones
• Chesser is another that the injuries line covers but I thought he did well after half time battling through a knee injury that I’m sure the club would have liked to see him spend way less TOG with. Such a pity he hit the post, would have been great for him personally and a real morale booster for the team
• Witherden pre kamikaze actually did some nice things to suggest he may not be a liability as thought
• Hurn was a real rock for big stretches of the game, especially after Gov went down
• Williams showed there’s something to work with. Clearly outpointed (unsurprisingly) in the ruck against Darcy he never gave up competing and had some good moments. Didn’t drop his head, took some good marks and followed up at ground level
• Barrass had a shaky start again but really came into the game well, like Hurn, especially after Gov went down
• Long is quickly becoming my new favourite player. Was a presence in the game longer than his previous two and genuinely troubled their defence. Great game. Can’t wait to see what he does when he hits puberty

As I posted earlier, I thought our coaches had a really good game that started with their planning and ended with them making great adjustments on the run to cover an unforeseeable level of carnage in the 2nd quarter. On any other day they would have been rewarded with a win

This was a game that could really be the making of this group despite the final score and the more immediate consequences of six or more injuries in the next block of games. It’s clear that there’s elements of a game plan that can work and the players are embracing. More importantly Simpson and a clearly invested in driving a rebuild and he has the support of the playing group

As supporters all we can realistically ask of the players each week is that they give it their all. They did that today and then some. Haven’t been prouder of the team since that day in 2018

heck Freo. heck the umpires. Up the Coasters

I forget when exactly in the 3rd- but to see Ginbey break a tackle and just get himself out of trouble from a centre clearance was a great sign. I think one of the hallmarks of our early 00’s midfield was that ability to not just evade but also to be able to bust through them.

He’s going to be a challenge to tackle in a couple of seasons. He’s just so strong already.
I'm getting Clayton Oliver vibes. He's building nicely, don't think he gets the rising star nom this week but he is getting close

Positive
Ginbey and Long obviously
Hewett seems to get his hands on it. Wasn't clean with his ball handling or kicking today but you can forgive that. A couple more preseasons in him to strengthen and increase fitness and I think he is a good player.
Chesser found more of the footy. Shows some hope given these are his first games since a handful of underage games in 2021. But at the same time I'm still skeptical and would deffers rather we'd taken Johnson
Hunt and SPS are turning into good recruits
Allen is finding his feet again and restoring confidence
Gaff was much better
Run and carry again!
Won contested possessions and equalled clearances in a team that got a bath in the hitouts

Negatives
Shuey and Gov injuries. Combined with Yeo and Nic Nat that's now 4 players on the list who are on good coin (maybe not Shuey now) who just can't string games together and haven't for two years now. Can only afford to keep 2 on the list next year. Gov and one other. Signing Nic Nat for 2 years was a mistake - which everyone knew at the time.

The most pleasing thing about Ginbey, given we already knew he was a contested gun, is that he also found the ball in space and spread nicely, and was involved in a couple of link-up chains. Hopefully Culley follows his lead - when he gets a run.

Funny how you pick odd things live at the game.

1) We obviously outplayed them all over the ground except for 10 mins in the second and then the last quarter when we just run out of legs.

2) Freo has cooked another rebuild. They are done and we will win another before they do

3) No one mentions Hurn but he will leave an enormous hole in the team when he retires in 5 years. Shored up the defence when McGovern went down.

4) There was a marking contest in our forwardline at a pivotal point in the last quarter. Darling had first hands but was tackled/ pulled backwards in the contest for no whistle. Obvious free kick was obvious and a goal would have bought us back into it.

This was the play that then went to to the wing and Ryan got inexplicably got pinged a 50 for what looked like hobbling to the mark. WTF he is supposed to have done is beyond me. The whole crowd Freo included - was very muted when it resulted in the goal that decided what had been a great contest. Thanks maggots for ******* a great game

5) Albanese with his fat guts holding his wine getting booed while oblivious he was on the big screen. Look of surprise when he turned around and realised.
Yep re the rebuild they've really tripped themselves up. The Jackson trade was as bad as the Kelly one, but given they've done theirs on the way up while Kelly was done on the way down, it's going to be more damaging for them. The best case scenario is they end up with someone as good as the ruckman they already had in Darcy, but for this to happen Darcy has to move to another club, and in the process they've lost a number of decent players in Lobb, Acres and Logue and thrown away a swag of picks.

Just like the Hogan recruitment was a disaster for them, and Lobb wasn't much better - given they paid more than they sold him for, even though he was a better player when they sold him than when they bought him.

Brave effort, definitely deserved to win, but realistically it was probably also the game where the footy gods booked us in for a bottom 4 finish.

Given where the list is at we simply cannot afford to rule a line through Crippa, McGovern and Shuey for most of the year, and potentially Ryan on top of that. And I have a nasty feeling that a few of the other 'six or seven' from today will be names noone wants to hear.

Speaking of names noone wants to hear, fmd, I don't know how he does it when at this point noone expects him to do anything except suck, but even with rock bottom expectations Bailey Williams still somehow manages to find a way to disappoint. Darcy and Jackson combined for SIXTY NINE hitouts to Bailey's 14. He had 2 marks. He provided nothing up forward, he didn't link or provide an extra number in defence or win an impressive number of clearances, we literally could have played a 190cm tall mid in the ruck and got more from them.

He's a ****ing awful player.

I reckon that's an awful take on BBW's game today.

Competed hard against all odds. He was never winning that ruck battle, but he did well to negate their influence for the most part.

For all their supposed dominance Darcy and Jackson were unable to put the ball to advantage largely because Williams was willing to compete

I thought he had a good game without meaningful support

Ginbey not only leading the league in tackles but currently averages more contested possessions than the likes of De Goey, McCluggage, Liberatore, Brayshaw, Mills and Newcombe to name a few.

3 games in the kid. Could not be more impressed with how he goes about it
He is a big positive of both today and the season so far.

But we need to be careful. We can't have an 18 year old (albeit an 18 y.o that's built like a brick shithouse) bashing and crashing the packs every week. He'll need a strategic rest sometime soon.

Conveniently we drafted a 19 year old crash and bash inside mid last year in Culley.
