Most of the positives have been mentioned.

I have a couple of negatives which to be honest have been around for quite a long period of time.
First one is the inability of our forwards to separate and find space to lead into. Just as JK and JD did it looks as though OA and JD are all still leading or jog trotting to the same spot and making just so easy for any defence. With our centr breaks I find they are not even leading, they are just calling for it deep and high. This needs serious work.

Our own defence are still not being accountable for a man and are still prepared to give their man 5-10m of space. When you are transitioning to a quicker ball moment game plan then this relies on absolute lockdown one on one defence. I think it’s another area that needs serious attention but keeps being ignored.

Other than that I was pretty proud of the boys today. It blew out a bit but not to worried about that. Tough games ahead but hopefully it will be a good learning for the young blokes. I really hopeee just keep trying to play as we are. Don’t go back because we have injuries.
The forward leading situation is where Snake excels but I think playing him as a second ruck makes it difficult to utilise him that way. I'm not sure of a solution.

Who could've predicted this outcome, this sudden burst of injuries? After last season, it's unbelievable?
We we're always concerned about Shuey, NN and Yeo, even Hurn, with soft tissue recurring injuries
that could happen at any time.

But taking the positive line, it's forced our hand and we are now officially in a rebuild and that's a good thing.
The end is coming sooner for some seniors and that is also a good thing (not for them of course)
We get to fast track our youth, without harming their long term fitness we hope.

Lots to like about the young ones. Should get to see more of them now along with those pushing up or rotating from WAFL..

Lets get on with it. We legit have every reason (diplomatically) to be in the lower ladder and get some good picks again, without tanking per se.
We still need faster players. Simmo mentioned it saying 'we were going goal for goal, but early in the 2nd their pace began to show, they were faster than us" (or words to that effect).
So in some ways unfortunately we still have two plodders in Gaff and Sheed (or Mr. Floppy as I call him)
Cripps will be hard to replace.

So I guess we'll trundle through this year without any pressure or great expectations and watch the trees grow?
I tend to agree with another poster re Hewett - enough of the figjam, take a look at how Ginbey goes about it and apply yourself to the team thing. Early days. (But his break-out moment is coming!)(can't wait) ((;
Hope Chesser injury isn't serious after all he's been through.
Looking forward to the next game and team announcement.
Not looking forward to the injuries announcement (also hope Ryan not too bad, need him)
The 2nd half of the season will be interesting with maybe NN, Yeo, possibly Gov...if they can stay on the park?
How good is Long!...and Hunt.

looks like a poor tackling technique

Fatty needed to go lower against a guy going hard for the ball
👍

Nah well played, credit where it’s due. You guys are good for 9th this season. Never going flag, we will be ahead of you again in a year or two. Blowtorch will be on J-Lo by mid season. Going well!

Dude from the worst performing side in the modern game comes in to chirp the day after they beat us. Isn’t your rebuild complete? It’s almost like your ‘top 4’ side has the same amount of points as us after the first three rounds 😆

Well hey would you like at that for the first time in ages our injury list is looking pretty go-

Been saying for three years just show us you care, you don't have to win but have a crack and the fans will be happy. Very happy supporter, looked adversity in the face and stood up. Final result is irrelevant, there's growth in both the playing group and the game plan here and it's exciting.

Positives:
  1. Let's focus on my whipping boys. Gaff stood up when he needed to, Kelly has been straight lining the contest for two weeks now instead of running to it and standing off to the side, Snake is competing with aggression, Bailey may have got towelled in ruck but he's more switched on and competing around the ground happy to see it, SPS has really turned things around.
  2. Call it separately for another of the whipping boys, Witho just supremely courageous eyes for the ball knew he had to impact the contest and put his body on the line to do it. Hope he's gotten away without any cracked ribs. That's the thing that makes all your team mates stand up and play harder, bravo young man.
  3. Exciting youth coming through, Ginbey and Long are stars and when Hewett develops his tank I think he will be too, if Burgiel can show something this season this is going to be one hell of a draft.
  4. Sign of game plan improvement - ball movement! how good! guys like SPS and Hunt really helping here.
  5. A worst case scenario of a future midfield of Barnett, Ginbey, Hewett and Reid due to injuries is pretty tantalising prospect.

Negatives:
  1. Sheed is really becoming a worry to me. Given our list and now injuries I think we probably need to carry him in the team, it's the standard he sets for our youth that really irritates me. Centre bounce attendances where the level of defence is throwing one arm out then standing flat footed watching the oppositing midfielders run it out of the square. Accumulating stat numbers by leading to positions 10-12m away from stationary players across half back and still having a disposal efficiency of 50-60%. Just not good enough and a message really needs to be sent, I'm just not sure we have the cattle to send it. Really crying out for Culley and Yeo to come back.
  2. Injuries on one hand give some players approaching contract expiry the opportunity to show us if they're worth persisting with but I really hope it doesn't hamper the signs of game plan improvement we've seen so far.
  3. AFL continues to work to offset the historic stat of West Coast umpiring bias at home by going the complete opposite direction utilising as many "subject to interpretation" options as possible.

We didn't finish with the 4 points but you can bet your last dollar that Simmo is bottling the spirit the boys showed during that match and will be breaking it out often this season as the guard changes. Efforts like that give the kids belief that they belong, and they shape the culture and foundations of a footy club.

In terms of the bigger picture we lost nothing yesterday. In fact I'd say we were winners.

That 3rd qtr effort was really important for the kids and their future as you say, and as Simmo mentioned.
That's the new standard, the spirit and heart.
It was literally a changing of the guard right before our eyes.

Its somewhat anecdotal, but we seem to look much better when we largely abandon our structures and Simpson just lets the boys play, particularly around the ball

No more, you stand here, you stand there, this guy is our designated extractor and everyone spreads away from the contest. Just more basic, see ball, get ball, attack the contest hard. If you aren't first to the ball, tackle the guy that is. Try to move the ball quickly whenever possible.

Contested ball and ground ball get better by extension because for once, everyone is actually trying to win the ball, rather then effect the outlet disposal

And its a much more visually pleasing brand of football too

Couldn’t have been happier with the effort and how Simmo has been leading this season.

Can see player buy in with the ball movement when we have it and real fight and pride in the jumper when we don’t. That every week as we build back up and I’m sweet. Exactly what a supporter wants to see. Our third quarter was huge in the context of it all.

Freo are supposed to be contending (we’ll see) and with all the youth on show for us I’d guess minus a few of those 6 or 7 in game injuries the margin would have been at least halved, or possibly better. It’s amazing we stayed in it on the scoreboard as long as we did before the inevitable blowout due to having no bench and some on the park quite obviously battling injury too.

Looking at where we are at there were so very many good signs.

Hope we play like that every week, might even be a fun rebuild even if wins are hard to come by. Excited to see Hough & Culley have a crack next

I think that yesterday, despite the injuries, we still stuck to at least trying to play to the game plan that’s being implemented

It didn’t always work but I think we actually stuck to our structures pretty well

I like the game plan the issue is doing it for 4 quarters or as we did last week smashing a team in a quarter.

+
  • Red hot crack given no interchange and 1-4 potential injuries on field.
  • Still impressed by the players willingness to implement the gameplan when stopping, backing up, and having a look would be far more convenient.
  • Ginbey's great. He'll be really dangerous when he gets some meat on his bones.

-
  • Freo players carrying on like pork chops when kicking goals against said undermanned 17th placed side from last season.
  • Less impressed with some players that think being in position, then calling for a 30cm handball is useful.
  • Is Darling injured or does he not want to do the obvious defensive running?

We'll likely be 1-8 before playing Hawthorn, and even then that game is in Tassie. However more than a few winnable games against the bottom 6 in the second half of the season, doubt we'll win the spoon.
Yeah I agree - if we apply the effort that we saw today to the majority of games we play this year then we'll snag a fistful of matches throughout the season. Might even catch a finals contender on the hop and act as their "wake up call".

It’s a very taxing game plan but it seems that helter skelter approach is the way the league is going

And no side can maintain that running intensity for a full 4 quarters. The key is maximising the damage when momentum is going your way and minimising it when you’re under the pump

A single decisive burst can be enough against teams like GWS but needs to be sustained longer against better sides

Against Freo we leaked some soft goals in the first quarter and couldn’t capitalise on our momentum in the third

Kicked 3.5 and 1 OOF in the 3rd and 5 points in the 2nd quarter. Dominated field position in that quarter but didn't kick enough goals. Hopefully fingers 🤞 Yeo can play a similar role to Shuey. Will be about the contest again this week Ginbey and Hewett will get a chance to learn from the best.
