Autopsy Round 3, 2024 :Hawks fail against Cats

First qtr was as depressing as it gets but happy with the fight we showed for the rest of the game. They were kicking them out of their ass and that happens, it’ll be us at some point this season.

Gonna skip a lot of the intricacies of the game and say just thanks to the fans that stuck around - especially those that sat out in the rain. Severely outnumbered the cats fans today. Was great to see our cheer squad so full while theirs had emptied out even though we were 30 pts down with 15 mins to go.

Thought if you take the 1st quarter out we weren’t too far behind them- but I suppose that means nothing… Geelong got the umpiring going their way again- it’s always minimum 2-3 goals the other way…at crucial moments too…

Breust was shocking early- giving up those two goals- I think you might as well play Butler at this point- Bruest is similar to Gunston- he’s been a fantastic servant but the end is near… time to move on sadly 😢

Games like this you look for the positives:
  • Worpel was fantastic
  • Weddle did a nice job on Cameron
  • Mackenzie looked likely
  • Wizard Watson had some nice moments
  • The midfield really lifted in patches
We aren’t a finals team but we’re building - we are on the right track but it takes time- look at the guys that played today who haven’t played 50 games… imagine them at 50+ and 100+ games - that’s our future…

Game was run and done in the 1st Quarter.

Turnover, score.
Turnover, score.

Go at it.

I'll dispute you on this.

Back to 4 points the margin early in the third.

Then a few lucky bounces and an umpiring howler saw the deficit blow straight back to 6 goals and we couldn't recover in the pelting rain.

Better team won on the day, but we were up against it from some poor umpiring decisions and weather.

what's the solution to the slow starts? can't keep trying to come back from 5-6 goal deficit at QT.
It's as not as simple as that - we just aren't slow starters, we have a plan to be at our best when the time comes to win the game, as the opposition does too - like a horse race, some might go out and lead from the front and destroy their rivals such as Might and Power did in the 1997 Caulfield Cup by 10 lengths only to beat Doriemus by a bob in the Melbourne Cup that year. Grrrwww.

It's somewhat a game of chess on the ground and the box as everyone works out their plans, and it's better to be in front, but it usually comes down to being less blindsided in the coaching box. You get them back though.

Just back after a wet and windy day.

Houston, we have a problem.

Coaching: I love Sammy, but for the first time, I'm having reservations.

How many times can you persist with poor positioning before it becomes a case of stubborness?

Amon and Weddle are not true defenders. I don't know why SM insists on this experiment...

You know why we won the 2nd quarter?

We actually had a goal-side sweeper who held position and prevented Geelong from breaking out unopposed as they did in the first.

The midfielder held position and forced a stoppage, and we fought our way back.

Q3 - Scott changed it up, and simply instructed the offensive goal-side mid to grapple our sweeper and stop him affecting play.

We were smashed again out of the middle.

Mitchell did nothing - no runner, no 2nd mid as a sweeper - nothing was changed, so nothing did change. We got belted again.

Any chance of telling Lewis to lead AWAY from his man Sam? Nope.

Too many soft Hawks.
Ward and Amon made a couple of pathetic 'attempted' tackles. Ward on 2 occasions didn't go when he had to. Sadly McKenzie (who was good otherwise) did as well for the second week in a row.
The forward pressure was pathetic. Lewis needed subbing at half time and a quicker more defensive player (Hardwick) moving forward.

Sam is slow to react, and it's a worry.

The biggest worry - we have no leaders. No-one to stand up. Sicily is a joke of a Captain, Moore doesn't say boo, and other senior players such as Breust and Impey don't seem to want to organise or lead.

Only Frost (another superb game) and Worpel seemed to give a rats behind.

This is the softest, rudderless Hawthorn outfit I have seen for 20 years.

I'd kill for another Luke Hodge right now.

Only Frost, Worpel, McKenzie, Chol and Scrimmers came away with any real credit - Meek was an improvement on Reeves - the rest ranged from average to poor.

Too many blokes drinking their own bathwater - and it shows.

Honestly, if Sam wants to get the ship back on course - he needs to draw a line through Breust, Impey, Ward, McDonald and Lewis and tell them to go back to box hill and earn their recalls.

Soft and leaderless.

We smashed their midfield. Won:
I50s by 10
Clearances by 15
Hitouts by 10
Contested ball by 10
Squared the scoring shots.

Worpel clearly BOG.
Wards best game for us.
Same with McKenzie.
Meek is a keeper. Fantastic 2nd half.

Hoping Wiz is OK.

Bring in Butler and Ramsden.

I'm actually quite positive after watching that. I can see the blue sky.

The Ginni treatment is appalling. Something needs to be done.
IMO The key difference at the moment, is that our shots on goal are scrambled chaotic affairs. Our whereas opponents are getting good clean looks at goal. I may be wrong, but it seems like our opponents are getting time and space in front of them to hit up an option. Hopefully this can be corrected without going too defensive.

I was harsh on Meek early on but he ended up with a pretty decent game (16 disposals, 3 marks and 42 hitouts)

He is never going to be an explosive, athletic type ruck but he does have to ability to get to a lot of contests around the ground.

Id say first ruck is his position to lose now.

Meek, Ramsden and Chol vs Cox and Cameron next week.

Very interesting match up on paper.

Always with the insults. Geelong play in bursts and have done for years.
So Geelong let us get within 4 points, just like that?

Always with the insults, because you're always with the drivel.

Am I the only one who thought Ward played well, even though the conditions certainly didn't favour his game style?

Seemed very busy in the final quarter when the heavens were at their heaviest.
Played a good game and really good 2nd quarter .
I thought he was a key to us getting back into it

Looks like teams have gone to work on Sicily. Only highlights how badly needed Blank is . Midfield leaking clearances out the front is also a common theme this year.
I cant see a fix for either of these issues. Maybe Day coming in when fit.

Good fight back after quarter time.

Horrible first quarter.

Great to see Worpel and Frost have great games.

Horrible umpiring - especially of Ginnivan. Hawks must ask the AFL to explain.

*edit: Mackenzie & Watson also showed some very positive signs today
Looks like the umps still have it in for the race track goer Ginni, somethings never change.??

The hardest part about Ward is he gets stuck on the fat side wing for long stints of the game depending on whether we have the run on or the oppo does.

When the oppo is on he doesn't get a chance to touch the ball but he does a mammoth amount of defensive running for the side.

Stays in next week

We have many a hard working player, but really lack the class and skill.
Lil Dyl struggling so far this season.
Just not sure where Ward sits positionally. Too small for inside mid, but lacks the polish needed on the wing.

We desperately need some key position guns. Chol our best this year.

Wardy is a concern.
