Autopsy Round 3, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Western Bulldogs

Positives
  • Games into youth
  • Waterman demonstrating why he is on the list (flexibility).
  • Hunt ran all day and honestly feels like our fittest player out there.
  • Gov early on and his interception ability has not faded away with age.

Negatives
  • Brady Hough I feel this season has lost so much of that pace that we saw in his first season.
  • ability to defend through the midfield was non existent.
  • Tackling or the lack of it is a real concern.
  • This high half forward role that simmo thinks long should be playing. It literally adds nothing.

Is it me or does anyone think Gov is in AA form and a good chance to get it if he stays fit. He's been carrying our backline and you could say he may have stopped us from losing by a 100 points. His ball use has mostly been excellent and he's been killing contests more despite the lack of midfield pressure.

Connection between mids and fwds is woeful, so much hack kicking forward and long kicks not the forwards advantage. Understand we don't have great targets but still need to do better. Yeo's effort obviously great but he is one of the worst culprits. I like Maric kicking it inside 50 but he needs to find more footy to do so.

Don't think anyone at the club will be at the club for our next serious tilt.

Hopefully Harley gets to play at least 1 final with us, but that's looking WAY off.

Positive has to be getting games into kids, you never know after a few games kids may surprise once they feel comfortable at the level.

+ the effort was good, can really fault it

- skill levels
absolute total crabs when it comes to handling the ball
JJ was absolute rubbish
Hough went backwards
seems there were plenty of Eagles standing around not knowing where they should be...training?

Positive- we haven't been pumped by 100 yet !

I don't know what people expected. We lost senior players in hurn and shuey who played the vast majority of games last year and we also cut a bunch of 23 - 26 year olds who although not afl quality they were seasoned bodies .

We replaced them with kids .

It was never going to turn around quickly.

Better to do a quality re-build than a quick rebuild with lesser more mature players .

Let's pull the cream of the crop from the draft for the next 2-3 years before tassie comes in

A decision made 2 years too late; still running a doubtful game plan; players clearly don’t know their roles and the coach inspires no one inside or outside the club.

The difference between the kids at Richmond today and us staggering in terms of understanding their role and playing positive football.

Simmo has zero runs on the board in terms of developing players.

Nothing improves and the rebuild doesn’t really get going until Simmo goes.

Positives
  • We weren't bullied around the contest - the clearance and contested ball numbers have been decent this year.
  • Gov was brilliant, both with his intercepting and his ball use (especially early).
  • Following on from the above, Jilliams' goal and the way we moved the ball directly through the corridor showed we're capable of executing flat, accurate passes on occasion.
  • Thought Jamieson was pretty good again for a makeshift defender.
  • Kelly and Yeo competed hard with a bunch of kids as support.
Negatives
  • A lot, but beyond the skills and inability to stop run-ons/convert basic chances...
  • I'm not sure if it's structural or form-related, but Long has had a quiet start to the year. Maric was pretty invisible today, too.
  • I really like the energy and aggression Jones plays with, but his game today was one of the most droppable performances in recent memory.
  • We need someone other than Hunt with the ability to break lines off half back, which makes Burgiel's appendix explosion even more frustrating.

Would have loved to see the result if we had Flynn and Allen out there today with the positive contested ball numbers and a good number for F50 entries.

Those two injuries have crippled us so badly right now :'(
It's not the contested ball that was the problem today it is we have no spread and outside run in the midfield.

Chesser WTF ! he has no idea how to find the pill .
Petch and ginbey the same no point having him outside mid .

Luke Edwards starting as the sub ? Our only genuine outside mid who can at least run out the game .

Masten for all his faults he knew how to run and where to run to link up

Waterman?

Remains the most frustrating player on our list about 7 seasons in.

He can’t be relied on in any aspect of the game. And his lack of competitiveness in most 50:50 balls on the ground - and tendency to apply no pressure when it looks like he’s beaten are awful.

Never a positive

Positive- Clearance work……. Old boys not injured.

Negative- Geez that Chesser pick looks horrible. Hope he can turn it around. Not much shown from the young crop at all. Concerning.

No one really putting their hand up in the magoos. Gaff and Witherden….

Gotta feed Reid. He makes things happen.

The midfield did okay today in clearance and the contested ball. The connection between the the midfield and the forwards is a huge worry.

Without being at the game it's hard to see if the Forwards are working for each other. I hardly saw a lead at all.

The ball was constantly being bombed in to a contest. Then run out again. Really should be looking at other setups for the forward line as there are no tall power fowards.

Jack Darling's wrist alright? Almost snapped back entirely going for an uncontested mark 20m from goal. Reminded me of some of my mistimed forehands playing tennis
