Autopsy Round 4, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Sydney

I think back to back road games is something we should request more and stay on the road. Melbourne talked it up and seemed to suit us. 2-3 of those a year
Agree. Especially while our squad is young, strengthens relationships etc... and for the guys who are getting older it reduces travel (except for the fact that Gather Round is an extra travel week tacked onto the season)...

That was our best game for the year by a fair way. Yeo and Gov in particular are having outstanding seasons standing up against the flow and it was good to see a few others standing with them today.

+ Reid is the standout positive and provided he keeps progressing it shouldn't be out of the equation to name him as our first teenage captain next year. It's like the debate around splitting pick or just take him, just do it.

+ Our midfield is improving and stood toe to toe with Sydney for the most part. Ginbey is only 19, at worst he will be a solid AFL player but he could easily be more than that by the looks.

- Stil loads of negatives. **** me dead. I don't want to go too far into individuals but collectively we have the worst 25-30 year old players imaginable. This is largely on Simmo

- coughed up another 100 points again today while kicking a score that could easily have won it, this is on Simmo (as I type this Carlton just beats Freo with a double up goal to hit 73 points). 😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂.

- said this for years Barrass and McGovern can't play in the same team but Simmo keeps doing it with the same result over and over and over. Simmo as above.

-Chesser is having a shocking 2024, is quite possibly another high draft pick bust

Positives:

  • What I thought was just nice road trip and catch-up with friends and family in Adelaide with a 20 goal Eagles loss thrown in turned into a surprise reasonable effort, even leading at half time.
  • Saw Harley Reid's first goal and another great performance. Love the way he takes the game on and bursts through tackles. WCE, please somehow get this guy to be a one-club player.
  • More from the other young players this week: loved Ginbey's game, Long good (just a shame he didn't nail one or two more shots at goal), some nice moments from Maric, Rawlinson and Jack Williams.
  • Great games from Yeo, Gov and Hunt.
  • Reasonable game from Bailey in the ruck and around the ground
  • Petch mark
  • Whatever his shortcomings, Waterman's effort and run can't be faulted.
  • Effort and contest much better than last year

Negatives:

  • Feeling like a 26 point loss is a win
  • Injuries
  • Umpiring did us no favours, particularly in the first half
  • Loch Rawlinson missing a set shot for his first AFL goal, would have been so good for him
  • Skills still: turnovers (Duggan, Rotham in particular) and inability to hit a teammate with a handball
  • Players stuffing up a goal by playing on when 30 metres or less from goal straight in front. Just go back and kick the goal for goodness sake.
  • Amartey leading and taking a mark all by himself in the last quarter while Barrass stood motionless at full back. Apologies to TB if someone else was meant to be on Amartey, but it looked poor at the ground.
  • Why does SA get the gather round for years to come rather than the advantages it confers being shared around to other states?

Positives

We were in a game in the last quarter.

Effort was there hard to criticise anyone for lacking in this department today.

Youngsters as a group were better this week. Still think Chesser and Rawlinson need time in the WAFL to develop but haven’t given up on Chesser just yet like some.

Yeo and Gov have been good and are leading by example.

Fat smiley kid just keeps showing us glimpses of our future. So much to look forward to.

Hough gets the job done again this time on Papley. Kids going well.

Could have been a closer result which leads me to my negatives

Both Fifties were technically there and cost us dearly. 2 goals.

The Petch Waterman f up was a 12 point swing. We lost by 26 points. That’s 24 points I’ve just mentioned above we could have been right in the game.

Unfortunately we are 4-5 players short of being able to realistically compete against the better teams regularly. Allen, Ryan, Hewett and Sheed if all fit would help but the depth of our squad is very poor.

The Frustrating

Duggan. 30 disposals @ 80% efficiency sounds good but the 6 errors he made were terrible. He’s trying his backside off only to then be his worst enemy.

Petch. Does some great stuff only then to turn around and undo it all.

Our handball is not at a good enough standard. We turn it over as an unforced handball error at times which is the hardest thing to defend in footy. If we could fix this our scores against from turnover would halve easily.

The draw has been one from hell. One home game in the first month and all games against sides that are fighting it out for the top 8 if not top 4. No favours there for a wooden spooner. Do better AFL.

Don't forget Sheed :fire: :lipstick::highheel::nailpolish:
Think he had 15 touches today, Culley played also.
West Coast Best Players were Sparks, Gaff, Hall, Trew, Johnston, Witherden.
Good to see Hall in there...but so is Gaff and Witherden.
Sheed+Culley to play more Wafl (fwiw) I imagine..along with Ryan?

Might see Hall in soon...?

Great to actually be watching the game and still feel like "We're in this boys".
Biggest positive for me was the massive improvement over not having the Oppo backline Completely and Utterly take Mark after Mark...which has definitely been the case in the first few games. Attributable to a couple of factors in my opinion. The players up the field were not bombing high but kicking the ball with aflatter trajectory. And generally the forwards were contesting the ball honestly ( in other words ...out of position make a spoil.)

Negatives were obviously 2 injuries to young players who were just starting to fit and watching "composed senior players" make serious gaffs.

+'s
We actually competed for 1/2 a game.
We won our first quarter for the year.
The effort was there for more time than any match this year, even though skills were lacking.

-'s
injuries
we died at half time and just didn't look in it from that point on.

Overall
I hope we persist with guys like Chesser (not a good game I know), Hough etc. over bringing back Gaff etc. We need to get miles into legs and time together to better understand each other.

Doesn’t seem to get mentioned much but I thought Hough was absolutely outstanding on Papley. He’s developing into a very reliable Shep type and I reckon he’d be very much at the pointy end of the B&F leaderboard as it stands.

I cannot express how glorious it felt to watch Harley’s break out game. He’s shown glimpses all year but really put it all together today for almost 3 quarters.

Credit also has to go to Boots and Schofield for turning the midfield around. Admittedly a fit Yeo and Harley makes a huge difference but the scores from stoppages, clearances and contested possessions is about 2 years ahead of where I thought it would be given how awful it was last year.

Would love to see Hall come in for Edwards if match fit. Honestly don’t think playing for the currently shambolic Beagles is doing anything for his development.
