Autopsy Round 5, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Richmond

How much fun was that?

Positives:

  • Winning. Who cares if it's against an injury-depleted opposition, given we've just endured two years of unprecedented injury lists?
  • Harley Reid OMG. Has already vindicated our decision to take the best player rather than split the pick. Nic Naitanui is my all-time favourite player but after today's game I need to find a Harley photo for my avatar.
  • Yeo brilliant - showing us what we've missed for several seasons.
  • Career best game by Waterman. Was at Mount Barker last week seeing just how hard he works, great to see him get reward for that effort today. What an effort to be where he is now after last year's health scare.
  • Plenty to like from other young players: Ginbey and Chesser in particular, but Brockman and Long also had some good moments.
  • Tim Kelly (except for his disposal inside 50).
  • Petrucelle's improvement this season.
  • Plenty of dash and taking the game on.
  • Dominating contested possessions, clearances and inside 50s.
  • There are actually two teams lower than us on the ladder!
  • Pav so scared of what Yeo might do to Freo next week he was campaigning to get him rubbed out.
Negatives:
  • Edwards concussion.
  • Score reviews sucking the momentum and atmosphere from the game.
  • Eagles assuming the first ten minutes was a warm up and the game started at 2:10.
  • Inaccuracy in the second half preventing an even bigger win.
  • There goes our priority pick?
  • I'm sure there were some other negatives, particularly in our defensive half, but cbf thinking about them because WE WON!!!

I was curious, and being POS, since i'm so happy for a win, wondered what tigers would be saying about our game, our straight kicking etc.
This was a surprise to see...

"These s*t timeslots and s*t efforts are killing me. How many ***** sunday afternoon games is the AFL going to shovel down our throats before the club grows some balls?"

"Yet if his jumper was yellow and black it’d be one week cause of ‘potential to cause injury’. I know Yeo will be fine."

this one hurt...

"Wtf is up with West Coast’s song? Or is it just that I haven’t heard it for that long?"

Every board is the same.

Big positive is we still got sheed Allen Ryan and Flynn to come back.

Flynn if flying will.improve us immensely. The other three will be big too. I hope we win more than a couple this season

Thought Noah was actually pretty good. Seemed like he was being played further up the ground and did some neat stuff in an under. Didn't mind his game?
Got an early centre bounce attendance and everything!

Have to be patient because he’s so young, but I feel very comfortable when he’s near the footy. Just needs to get near it more.

So even though Bolton ended with the 3 goals 2 of those were in the first quarter and really not much you could do about those and from there he only kicked one more in 3 qtrs of football.
I'd say Houghy got another one on the belt.
Haha no you can’t give him that. He’s had a good year, playing a tough role, but well beaten today.

I was a kid at the time, so don't remember it clearly, but is this what it felt like watching Judd's first few games?
I legit said the exact same thing to my wife this evening. It’s that pure knowledge you are witnessing the early days of a legitimate champion. Win lose or draw I just want to see what happens next.

I think the positive about our midfield right now - all of them can break tackles.

All have the power to burst through. It’s something that set Judd, Kerr & Cousins apart as a midfield group and it’s something that is becoming a trait in our younger boys, backed up by Yeo and Kelly who already had it.

Ginbey today broke through a tackle like the guy wasn’t even there. Reid seems to hunt being tackled just so he can get out of it.

Hopefully we get to see Hewett do it again this year because the more we can get the 3 of them playing together- the faster we will rebuild.

Positives

Had a beer just now and read the first 12 pages of our game day thread. The best of West Coast big footy at there finest. Upper cut yourselves Kent’s!!!!! Comedy Central.

Midfield dominance like we haven’t seen in a long time all be it against a weakened opponent. Yeo, Kelly and Reid all very good.

Jake had a blinder, was our hardest working player out there today. Watched the game live and he was absolutely giving it everything. Well done, deserved what came your way.

Some of our much maligned had better days, Darling, Rotham, Chesser and Duggan all were solid. It’s easier in a winning side.

Beagles won a game. Wowee what a day for West Coast. Like the idea of Ryan off half back.

How many wins do we need to make the 8?

Negatives

The Kent’s in the first 12 pages of today’s match day thread. Upper cut yourselves again.

We have some need for speed. Looked very vulnerable on the spread when the Tigers had the ball. Pressing high and keeping the ball in our forward half is great but we are lambs to the slaughter if it gets out the back. Our backline lacks so much pace.

We didn’t put the Tigers to the sword. This is true however they did drop a few back to clog up our forward thrusts, particularly in the last quarter and tried to counter attack from there defence. Something we could take note of to stop some of our blowouts.

Our bloody song. Cmon Don sort it.

Conclusion

Seriously we will still have some tough days ahead, no doubt but at least we look like we care. I’ll take that right now after the last few years.

I think most things have been covered, so I'll add that for a maligned player coming in late I really appreciated some of Witherden's defensive efforts in the second half especially. Threw himself around, good stuff.
