I get your point but he’s soft

Actually think I’ve seen worse efforts from him than I ever saw from Bonner and I hated Bonner as a player

If I was the coach he’d be shipped off to Tasmania yesterday
Soft and lazy at the moment unfortunately.

His best is elite but he's a mile of it atm.

I'm not seeing the reason for such negativeness about the game.

I think because we are aware that we stole that game. Freo's late misses kept us in it and with two short burst efforts we snatched a lead.

On the whole, we were outplayed over the four quarters and that's what we're focusing on.

Enjoy the win.

I very much enjoyed the win at the game. Those types of wins are very enjoyable.

Any talk of Burton has got to include Farrell. They both scout around for cheapies which looks like part of our gameplan but it’s too obvious, especially around 50. Their shortcomings become more obvious in finals.
Burton beelined a ball last night once, and came away with it so he’s got it in him. It’s the exception.
Farrell in the first qtr had the same opportunity but decided to “brace for contact”.
Just not going to cut it in September.

I think this just reflects the low standards we have for our rucks after basically having terrible rucks for the past 15 years aside from that 1 year Ryder played good. Yeah he got some taps and did some nice things but ultimately Jackson was more influential than he was therefore he lost his position on the night.
That is pure nonsense mate. Soldo's ruckwork was outstanding! Of course he is not going to match the mobility of guys like Jackson, Gawn, et-al, who are the best in the game, but some of his taps were just sublime. The fault lay squarely with our mids, who were constantly out-positioned by Freo's. A total reversal of the pre-season game. They just got sucked into Freo's negating tactics. They are young & still learning, and I am sure they will learn much from that effort last night.

An even bigger issue was their AWFUL entries into the forward 50. Not just bombs, but HIGH bombs, that gave Freo's defenders every chance of negating. It was just horrible to watch. After the first quarter stats were released with Pearce getting 10 intercept marks, I thought surely we would change our forward entry methods! Nope! Same old, same old! And I was even more frustrated when I watched the highlights of the Crows match, with their bullet-like, low passes into their forward zones, which Carlton struggled to defend!

I get the sentiment...

But that win last night is something we would of lost everytime by plenty in yesteryears ...

Freo ain't a bad side...actually they are very decent

Also Dixon got pantsed but i don't think we win if he wasn't playing...could be wrong.

Lol the missus went to bed around half time and I was explaining to her how it went and the JHF mark and goal etc. I was like that mark was probably the most engaged I and the crowd had been in years.

She just goes "so he keeps his job then?"
And I was like "...yeah, unfortunately."

God damn it keninly, **** off.

I didn’t watch the game closely but it was on in the background at the

Agree with this. He is a great bail out contested mark option. But with mobile talks like Marshall, finlayson when he is around and Georgiades we should be able to devise a game plan that makes the most of their strengths as well as Charlie’s. It’s a bit frustrating that we can’t. Having said that I don’t think Dixon has been even close to as bad as people on here have been suggesting. Still going at nearly 2 goals a game, above average for marks, contested marks and possessions. Just needs to convert the easier shots at goal he gets.
Agee. Dixon has been good so far this season. He has the hardest job on the field. Thirty times a game he has to stand under the ball as a dozen guys crash into him.
His contested marking has been excellent.

Also, from the TV

Jason Dunstall is one of the good ones, relatively.
Jason Dunstall was also frustrated and confused by our gameplan and forwards throughout the night.
Rucciuto wasn't as bad as normal, likely in a good mood cause the crows.

Can someone explain to me how Williams is not a better option than Farrell?

I thought Rioli was our only really dangerous forward last night. Georgiades and Dixon had moments as did DBJ but we really lacked a four quarter dominant forward. Todd Marshall is becoming a real concern and if his form does not improve he may be the one to make way for Finlayson. Todd has booted just seven goals in five games this season with four of those against Richmond. After what appeared to be a breakout year in 2022 Todd's form has slipped.

Last night we booted nine goals in a game dominated by defence. Fortunately the opposition could not do any better. ,

I mean at least Farrel has weapons but he needs to work through bending made accountable and not going missing

I’m dropping Jones for Williams all day if it’s like for like but I think all of us would drop McEntee for Williams

We won. Never in doubt. ;)
The game resembled a final where everything is dour and congested. We bang it in with high delivery and cannot fashion a clear mark while being picked off by the defenders. At the end we lose composure and play on rather than allow time to elapse, then put it out on the full giving them possession leading to shots on goal. Typical Port fluffing the occasion. I reserve my judgment on whether we have improved but I am skeptical at this stage. So never in doubt that we have really changed!!

Same story new season so far this year. We win against teams like this from talent over coming the lack of game plan. Nothing changed the whole game just more worker harder for longer shit. So far we have beaten average teams and pants by a possible top four team who have no forward line. But hey let's all be happy the mediocrity continues

Game style in congested play needs finesse going into the forward 50. If players dont lead and just stand around take them off and tell to lead and then lead some more so that the mid field know that passes to leading players is required and likely to succeed. If players dont listen take them off again so they get the message.

It all comes down to this....that ****ing documentary where Stinkers says "No leading on a slow play"
What this means is that if the opposition are able jump on the ball at stoppage and slow down our defence to attack ball movement, we will revert to full Hinkleyball. Which is exactly what happened.

Hinkleyball worked once last night Dixon 5 minutes before the end and we then had one really clean deep forward entry for the JHF winning goal. The rest rubbish. Our small forwards terrible.

I liked Burgoyne who showed composure and he's difficult to tackle unlike a guy like Bonner who would get caught htb regularly.
Jones was good I'll never criticise a guy for being aggressive and I thought he was attacking the ball well on the ground and in the air plus 2 champion tackles. 1 of which was a joke free kick.
Bergman was solid but in and out of the game. I thought Soldo played well but lost to Jackson on the night.
Whoever was responsible for Walters did well. They rotate but from my eye it was Jones/Banfield, Farrell/Switowski, so it could have been Houston or Burton/Walters.
Midfield soundly beaten would have been worse if not for Wines in and under but having him in the team means Drew does less. I assume he was following Brayshaw around.

I've posted a few times I would have Farrell on a wing and Williams back. I believe we are one of the worst teams for loose ground ball gets in defence and we can't win a premiership consistently giving away goals like this.

Collingwood will get hold of us next week like this because they almost play a variant of Hinkleyball themselves. They kick long to the pocket for Cox and Mihocek to bring it to ground and rely on chaos ball.

Farrell’s weapons come out once every so often when the other team give him a free shot on goal around the 50. I’m not seeing other weapons. He’s probably got more pace and maybe more stamina but I’d rather the footballer in Williams.
Jones is still a work in progress that’s worth persevering with, imo.
