Autopsy Round 8, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Essendon

Such a disappointing loss...we absolutely did enough to win that, but luck just wasn't on our side (plus Cripps brainfade)...but I tell you what, I absolutely bloody love THIS squad and the phase we are in...almost as much as our 2018 squad.

Waterman going from whipping boy to whipping boys
Reid throwing grown men around as if he is Clark Kent in the flesh
Yeo bursting out of packs like the second coming of Judd
Williams & Williams combo, pasty brothers from another mother
Barrass & McGovern winding back the clock
Petch finally learning how to use his abilities like the Flash season 2
Kelly carrying the team on his back with individual plays of absolute desperation
Growth of the young boys in Long, Ginbey, Hough & Chesser

...but most important of all...the muzzle being taken off Simpson. He looks like a new man in interviews/press conferences, and I have no doubt in my mind that Pyke is to thank for that. I 100% want him to take us to our next finals campaign.

Also worth noting...we absolutely missed Hunt tonight, and I hope he is back ASAP. Just as important as McGovern & Barrass to our backline.
What was Hunt out?

Ha
I knew Hunt was out just didn't know why
Post was meant to say 'What was Hunt out with'
Ah, makes way more sense.

“Hunt has battled through a knee injury in the last couple of weeks but has made a significant contribution since joining the club as a free agent at the end of the 2022 season. The injury will bring to an end a run of 30 consecutive appearances from his round one Eagles debut last season.”

Hopefully the rest gets him back up to it.

I'm just happy to support a real team again after the last few years of abject clown shit. Also, Jack Williams is Tom Hawkins from Wish. Watching a young key forward suddenly get good is one of my favourite things as a footy fan.

Positives: We played atrocious football for most of the game and we were two players down in the last, coming off a 3 day shorter break and we only lost by a goal.

Negatives: That was one of the worst games iv sat through, extremely frustrating from start to finish.
This sums it up for me, I was proud of the boys but wanted to hit them over the head with a frying pan too.

Im assuming whatever fired cripps up was substantial, he doesn't arc up too often .
If it came out what was said and no one did anything we'd all be bemoaning the lack of spirit/culture

+Kelly was huge
BWilliams took some big marks
JWilliams finally looking like he can play
Darling contributing
Hough..
- injuries, hopefully waterman is ok

What Cripps did was dumb, but people saying he was crap before then are wrong.

Game high pressure acts.
Game high score involvements.
Game high sprints and repeat sprints.
Game high f50 ground ball gets (oh but he fumbles!)
Equal 3rd on the ground for contested possessions.
Equal 5th for clearances.

Wasn't in our top 5 but he was in the top half comfortably for me.

He made a poor choice, or executed it poorly but he was playing well before then. He had one handball error that stood out as he handballed into space as (possibly Ryan?) changed direction to come towards him, it was a miscommunication. No worse than Reid kicking over Cripps head early, or missing Long short, or Williams on more than one occasion kicking directly to Bombers, or some of Petruccelle's decisions after half time

Overall I wake up today pretty happy with the display from the team last night. We're not the most skilled but the fight was there and I think that's what fans wanted last year.

I think everyone saw the same game.I don't think I saw anything different.
I think the positives where individual efforts mostly and there was a lot of them. Ginbey that young blond kid best game I've seen him play .Williams three goals .Kelly in the second half .Mcgoven great effort again.Barass,Dungan all pretty good and quite a few more good honest efforts from the Eagles players last night .

I don't like negatives but I have to say seeing our forward fellow Waterbottle not getting to kick his fourth goal was almost as annoying as not winning.

Sheed should never have been anywhere this team and we all know it. He was average in the WAFL but still gets selected over younger guys who were performing better. Our selection committee needs the biggest kick in the arse fir costing us this game with poor selection.

Waterman was fantastic
JWill was awesome.
Great stuff from Ginbey, Chesser & Kelly

Sad for Yeos injury cuz he’s been mint.
Reid was pretty average for most of the game.
Long gettin injured.
Ryan was so out of touch he needs more time in the WAFL

I loved seeing the desire that Waterman has for taking a mark - a bit like watching Josh Kennedy in action. Just for once however, Waterman could look around and pretend to be interested in kicking to someone in a better position. It's a team effort, Jake.
Seeing Reid standing in the goal square at full forward is very strange to say the least. If he needs a rest put him on the bench, because there was nobody kicking it to him out of the centre, especially Dom should-retire Sheed.
And this kicking backwards and switching in the backline business is not how you win games - it's how you get turnovers. The coach who is allowing that to happen so consistently should be sacked.

Long and Yeo and probably Waterman injured
Long had been ordinary in this game and last week
Waterman look really hampered and still played well
That idiotic mistake from Cripps cost him the goal and us a draw
Martin handed him his arse

Luke Edwards is just s**t is slow in motion and slow in mind
when he gets hold of the footy and just holds up the play its just awful

Darling got a couple of gaols but his work rate was horrible didnt chase

Liam Ryan should be dropped back to wafl for a few weeks to find form
Ah mate Long didn’t play last week…

Sheed wouldn't have been in the side, if not for Maric being ill.

Simmo said in the press conference in the lead up that Sheed would spend 'a few' weeks in the WAFL.

Unfortunate that Trew got concussed and Culley's probably not ready for AFL just yet.

Ryan's a massive concern. Double down and let him come good.

Or egg on the face and boited to WAFL?

I don't like this credits business at all.
Having watched Ryan play WAFL - the level is so far below his ability and competence that he gains nothing there. Tough decisions?? He did one or two thinks that are beyond what others on out list can do. he will improve, I think his game is 90% mental.
As for Cripps, reversals like this are all about the umpires temperament. It happens get over it. Not like the weekend from Thursday night onwards was a show piece of fine consistent umpiring.

Darling, on TV, did a lot of bull-eking work to free up others, Plays his roll and is gaining confidence.

The real negative was our team performance up to half time, particularly the second with dumb lazy kicks gifting several goals. Game over.

The importance of Yoe is obvious now he is back/was fit but we fought back without him which is a short term positive.

  • Simmos last quarter coaching, man on man really worked.
  • Jack Williams (I think we are too tall if Maric comes back)
  • Ginbey- must now get CBAs while Yeos out
  • Sheeds last quarter (besides going for the smoother rather then taking Heppells body in that last I50)
  • Bailey Williams 2nd half (Looking forward to when he’s playing FWD/Ruck)
  • Kelly’s 2nd half.
  • 🐍 hands
  • Our goal kicking (Even though apparently we should’ve won from the expected Scores)
  • Hough

Neg
  • Injuries, hopefully have some luck at the scans (sadly just a Gov injury away from big losses again now while Yeo is out too)
  • Ryan - Continue to play, it will come.
  • Darling freezing when he gets the ball

Oh please. Cripps got destroyed by Martin all night. Martin was probably reminding Cripps about it and Cripps didn’t take his pride being hurt well.

If Martin had said something untoward you would have seen players remonstrate, and they didn’t.

It was a massive flattener and all the positive energy and momentum we had built completely went out of the game.
