:thumbsu:Just looking ahead to round one if we lose this week to Adelaide and we have Brown Hodge Lewis and Craford all out.

Nearly everyone get a game who's in contention

My Team

Backs Ladson Gilham Muston

H/Back Birchell Croad Dew

Centre Bateman Mitchell Young

H/For Franklin Boyle Clarke

Full/F Williams Roughead Rioli

Ruck Campbell Sewell Tuck

Interchange Taylor X Ellis Osbourne Murphy

Who mises out

Bailey (need time to see how he comes back)
Renouth (showed in 2nd half NAB cup still has work to make it at this level)
Guerra (can only fit either Dew or Guerra in the one side not seen both but went with Dewy)
Ben McGlynn Not sure how Ben is going will be interesting to see he showed some good form last year
Thorp Can't wait to he's fit and going must remember to be patient
Moss Still needs to show more
Kennedy Good hands but looks to be a bit slow need to work on his athletic ability. Still time
Stokes Good be a surprise pick great speed Junior boys look ahead of him atm

Taking a positive view of our situation it gives the kids a real chance to strut their stuff and if a couple stand up it makes for one heck of a ride.

If Brown misses you would have to think that Dawson or Murphy will come in to provide that extra defensive option. Also I dont think that we will waste a bench spot for an additional tall (like you have with Murphy on the bench).

Backs:
Guerra Dawson Gilham
H/Back: Birchall Croad Tuck
Centre: Bateman Mitchell Young
H/For: Franklin Boyle Clarke
Full/F: Williams Roughead Osbourne

Ruck: Campbell Sewell Ellis

Interchange: Taylor Dew Rioli Muston

I think that Dawson will get first crack (rightly or wrongly) in the 22 ahead of Murphy as he is more experienced and Clarko clearly favours him.

Im not sure who plays in the Melbourne forward line these days but Gilham is likely to take Browny's big job in keeping Robertson quiet, Croad should take Neitz and Dawson would take Johnson who I think will spend most of the game Forward with White and Meeson doing the ruckwork.

This would be a good matchup for Dawson because Johnson is fairly tall, not great at ground level and not too quick. A good confidence booster.

I think the rest of the team will be as you detailed which will make us a little vulnerable in the middle. Depending on form, I would expect Tuck or Muston to be dropped for Hodge and Dawson for Brown in round 2 with Tuck, Muston, Rioli or Osbourne to be dropped for Lewis in round 3.

The big call will come in Round 3 when Crawf returns when only 1 of Tuck, Muston, Rioli or Osbourne will fit in the side (subject to injury)

Guerra.............Gilham............Brown/Murphy (depending on if we win this week)

Dew................Croad.............Ladson

Young.............Mitchell............Birchall

McGlynn..........Roughead.........Williams

Boyle...............Franklin...........Osborne

Foll: Taylor, Sewell, Bateman

Int: Campbell, Ellis, Tuck, Clarke

Rioli misses out as we need Osborne in for experience.

Its pretty thin without Crawford, Hodge and Lewis..... and maybe Brown. That's 4 near A grade players, if we can win without them it'll be a great effort.

A+

Birchall back to the HBF though, Clarke to the wing and Dew on the bench.

Good effort there by all posters I think. Side still looks capable even without those 3. Hodge is the big one to be missing in my books though. I'll be a lot more confident come round 2 with him back in the side!

If our second tier onballers in Ellis, Muston, Tuck et al can stand up in round 1 then we should get the points.

I hope I'm the only one, but is anyone else worried about our first 5 or so games, especially with the suspensions? Melbourne would normally be a shoe in, but with potentially 4 out that isn't so certain, then Dockers over there, Kanga's here (always play rubbish against them lately), Adelaide in Tassie (Adelaide won't be as bad as some pick) then Brisbane up there.

Looking at the teams you guys have put down it doesn't look too bad especially as we have lost no forwards, but I'm just worried. I suppose that a slow start doesn't always mean a bad year.....

Looks about right. Given the experienced absentees, I agree that the likes of Clarke, Murphy, Dew and Osborne will be preferred to debutants (bar Tuck). Look for Rioli in the first month though.

Geez, that midfield is a worry. Against a side other than Melbourne, the defence would be too. Forward line looks superb but getting the ball down there is going to be the issue.

How many games are we expecting from Beau Muston and Cyril Rioli this year ??

That's why I think we'll need to look at getting Ladson or Birchall up in the middle. Having Mitchell, Bateman, Sewell, Clarke doesn't look good for forward 50 entries.

Get Dew on the back flank kicking it out to Young, Birchall and Ladson who can then deliver to our forwards.

We may be OK, pretty solid bodies out there, decent forward line, our defence can hold them..... we just need to try to break even in the midfield. Mitchell is going to cop one huge tag unfortunately.

hawks fans i was just wondering whether you see ellis playing 22 games ?
and be selected in the starting 18 on a consistant basis ?
just seems like his ready to take smiths spot

I think so. He has similiar smarts to Hodge - reads the ball well, great disposal and although his has a light frame he does commit to the ball, often putting his body on the line.

Definately ready to step up!

Yes I think he will play close to every game. Looks like he will play HBF/Mid on a regular basis.

Has courage, not afraid of going in hard, composed and has great dispoasel. Needs to put on more muscle to become a great player, but I am convinced it will happen. :)

Hodge has a greater frame, but decision making can be similar.

correct me if im wrong but ellis is still only 19 ?
i have no doubt he will be built like hodge by next yr
at his age i think youve got a really exciting player about to arise

He couldn't be built like Hodge, doesn't have the same figure. He will be a player:thumbsu:

FB: Brown/Murphy Gilham Guerra
HB: Birchall Croad Ladson
C: Ellis Mitchell Young
HF: Bateman Boyle Franklin
FF: Williams Roughead Rioli
R: Taylor Tuck Sewell
In: Campbell Muston Dew Clarke

Players rotating through the guts and wings will be and half back for that matter will be Ellis, Bateman, Muston, Clarke, Dew and Birchall

Morton was not to far away
Still cant see Dawson getting a game, is a turnover king coming out of defence on the rare occasion he has the pill.
Been Very impressed with travis performances so far in the NAB cup think he is set for a great year of seniors, is tough and uncomprimising just like his old man!

Cant bloody wait for round 1!!!!

I can't beleive some of you on here worried about Melbourne round 1. Who would you rather play . We'll spank them. Rioli will play plenty ,he's just what we need up forward .Compliments the talls beautifully. Ellis is looking good and Muston is my smokey for big improver this year.

We could field our box hill side in round one and it wouldn't make a difference.

It's melbourne, we'll shit it in.

If everyone is fit that is listed, that is the exact side I would like to see.
Only change that might come in is Benny McGlynn but I dont think he'll be fit.

Come on like Dawson or not, he has had 2 pretty decent games out at fullback in a row. If he plays good against Adelaide, do you seriously think Clarkson wont name him? And instead name Gilham who is yet to play a really big role at fullback? I honestly think Clarko is ready to give Dawson one more chance, and it will start at round 1. Why would he play him in the preseason, Dawson has had two games that has warranted for him to play on, and then drop him come round 1? You would think at least Gilham would get a rotation on a big name, but he hasnt. Murphy is more chance to be named at fullback then Gilham right now, at least he has had experience on good players. Gilhams been a third tall so far at Hawthorn.
