Cameron and Dangerfield were both from the Geelong region. They were coming back home. That was the lure. Exactly the same as JHF. It's not like Geelong are Real Madrid and Port are Real Betis. The Handbaggers have just got lucky with a combination of some excellent father sons they got for no draft capital, getting away with a drugs programme, excessive government coin and a ludicrous home ground advantage. This Taper bellend deserves to be bullied off the site. Complete dickhead.

Beyond South Aussie homecomers (ie Polec who was rated higher than Yeo and Crisp of the Brisbane exodus, and after some excellent performances in the near miss of 2014, was flipped to become Connor Rozee), we’ve had three ‘foreign’ recruits of the Hinkley Era go on to become All-Australian ruckman, CHF and CHB.

Not bad for ‘ThE sMaLL cLuB iN sOuTh AuStRaLiA’.

Poor Ken, though 😭
Also note that these recruits you mention (assuming it's Ryder, Dixon and Aliir) are also from 2 team states and ended up at a club who had deficiencies (to differing extents) in their position meaning that we'd be more likely to spend a shit ton than the whopping 2 clubs that exist in their home states.

Sandy Brondello won the US WNBA title in October (thanks REH) with New York Liberty, and she is a mentor to Lauren Arnell.

Maybe you can learn from other coaches. Probably a crazy thought.

You need to be able to admit that despite being in the game a long time that you don't know everything and be willing to learn from others.

Which brings me back to my original point about how difficult it is for Port to attract high quality talent due to being the small club in SA.
When did Port last attract a player who is a superstar in the calibre of Jeremy Cameron or Patrick Dangerfield?
We've recruited Gavin Wanganeen and Jason Horne-Francis. Most Vic clubs haven't traded in one player of that quality during our time in the AFL, let alone two.

Melbourne: May?
North: Polec, lol
Richmond: Lynch
Port: Wanganeen, Horne-Francis
St Kilda: Hannebury, lol. Oh actually, it's probably Gherig

Ah what could have been, a new coach with fresh ideas, some new recruits, it could have been an exciting time for us desperate fans but no we still have the stale old coach Hinkley banging that square peg in that round hole, while Carr is happy to play midfield coach. Wow such a hungry club.

Calling the Scott Thompson that was traded a star, or even potential star is a stretch.
Sydney: Franklin, Josh Kennedy
Josh Kennedy, the grandson of a club legend was on Hawthorn's list for three seasons for 13 games and was traded for a bag of crisps. He was probably steak knives with Ben McGlynn at the time.
West Coast: Other Josh Kennedy
The guy they got for giving up Chris Judd.

Yeah, he obviously turned out to be excellent, but was considered to be injury prone and very much unproven at the time.

Graham Cornes in particular was flabbergasted at what he thought was an overpay.

Carlton getting Judd had nothing to do with the $250K/year Visy Ambassador deal he got at the time. In contrast all we had to do was give Fabian Francis an MG to secure JHF.

Saying Hinkley is handicapped by our ability to attract top end talent is actually a furphy as we would be better positioned to attract top end talent if we didn't have a total loser as a coach.

I was just listing their biggest fish.

I was just curious about whether Schulzenfest was right about half of AFL clubs never landing a top tier fish.

And he pretty much was.

There’s way too many trades and preseason draft/free agent pickups to mention, but the likes of North getting Leigh Colbert and Western Bulldogs landing Jason Akermanis and Barry Hall were considered huge moves at the time (a long time ago is those cases).

A lot of draft 'coups' that didn't end up working out, too. Tim Kelly, Mitch Clarke, Nathan Thompson, etc, etc...

I wasn't criticising your post but countering the argument that poor Daddy Donuts is hamstrung by a lack of talent on the playing list.

Akermanis was punted by the Lions as a culture killer. And was more about what clubs would be willing to take the risk on him.

"On 27 July 2006 it was reported that the coaching panel and senior playing group had voted unanimously (12–0) to not allow him back into the club."

I’m aware of why he left. It was considered a massive signal of intent and vote of confidence in the Bulldogs resurgence — and he was a prime mover in a team that ultimately made three consecutive prelims.
