Also note that these recruits you mention (assuming it's Ryder, Dixon and Aliir) are also from 2 team states and ended up at a club who had deficiencies (to differing extents) in their position meaning that we'd be more likely to spend a shit ton than the whopping 2 clubs that exist in their home states.

Yeah, he obviously turned out to be excellent, but was considered to be injury prone and very much unproven at the time.

There’s way too many trades and preseason draft/free agent pickups to mention, but the likes of North getting Leigh Colbert and Western Bulldogs landing Jason Akermanis and Barry Hall were considered huge moves at the time (a long time ago is those cases).

I’m aware of why he left. It was considered a massive signal of intent and vote of confidence in the Bulldogs resurgence — and he was a prime mover in a team that ultimately made three consecutive prelims.
