Loves footy, dead list at Hawthorn, more potential in Port Adelaide, old stomping ground. Why not?

Port - poor club probably. e arse

Clarko - would want nice $

Assistants - all three could coach in their own right and we save a shit load of cash....

No way we are getting Clarko.

He was here for 5 minutes and fckd us over on his way out.
Yeah but he still has the blueprint for success that he learnt at Centrals that they copied from Port.

He's ironically more Port Adelaide than any of our coaches.

i think any team that made it attractive enough could get clarkson, it would have to be on his terms and a lot of times that blows up in the clubs face. His last 3 years have been average considering he sold the clubs youth down the drain for top-up players to keep him in the hunt and now he's hunting draft picks

yep it would be out of character now for Clarkson to go to a club where his ability to speak out is constrained by a "somewhat less independent" board.

Just maybe he'd be tempted by the unfulfilled potential of GWS's list... here among other things he'd still have a few awkward senior player transitions to manage. His last few years' trading bets haven't paid off yet, but just as an example, can you imagine Clarko discussing Westhoff at selection? With list management? There wouldn't be any hint of trying to get him barely across the line to 300 games...

I don't think you can have too much of a crack at Clarkson for Hawthorn's current performance. Topping up when you've got the list to contend is absolutely the correct move. They'll now suffer for a bit because they haven't added real top end draft talent to their list for 15 years, but I don't think anyone is giving the flags back as a trade

If he wanted a new challenge, we're arguably in a decent spot for him if he's looking for another 10 year project, but he'll want to build from the ground up I imagine. Hawthorn wasn't a side full of talented players that his coaching simply polished, it was a project built from the ground up.

I'm looking at Essendon in 2012. At the start of June they were 2nd in round 10. 8-2 and 0.5% off top spot. Finished 11-11 in 11th spot.

Special circumstances though. They were doped to the gills and looked unstoppable until all their hamstrings exploded

Yeah. His big error was not cutting his losses and clearing the decks after they missed the finals in 2017. But if he does that and finishes bottom 6 in 2018, 2019 and 2020, he's probably under the pump to keep his job regardless - see Ross Lyon at Freo. Best thing for him to do is jump ship.

Port Adelaide would be an attractive package to any coach looking for a a job, all he has to do is finish 10th every year, have a bar set to mediocrity & stability.
A job for 10 years.

Poor Choco must look at Ken and think, how the **** do you do it, the talented list you burnt, 60,000 members, good assistant coaches, everything a coach could want. You sit there smug like you own the club my father helped build. You must of been one hell of a car salesman.

Gee this guy grinds my gears.

Sack Hinkley.

Finishing 8th would actually be an amazing achievement for this coach, this team and this club - we have only had 3 better finishes than that since 2004.

That in itself says just about everything you need to know about our transformation into a club more akin to St Kilda or Fremantle than the Port Adelaide many here grew up supporting.

The mental gymnastics of "supporting" Port Adelaide and also hoping to finish 8th to retain a no-hoper of a coach.

It's not mental gymnastics at all. Jumbo has not wanted Port to succeed since he had a breakdown and came back as a shell of a human.

I'm not that fussed because clarko may have already run his race, but I suspect the chances of him going anywhere near Alberton while the kochmeister is calling the shots would be less than zero.

I started to believe that this year might be different, which was obviously a mistake.

I was trying to pinpoint when that moment came for me, and I just descended into fulltime HiNkLeY hAtEr ‘this will never change, we are doomed, wake me up when it’s over’ mode.

And I did.

Round 3, 2018.

The offseason captures of Rockliff, Watts, Motlop joining what was still a talented and diverse group with plenty of juice left in it, coming off 2 very solid wins against Freo at home and Sydney away.

And then we’re all biting our nails in the dying seconds, relying on a Polec goalline save to prevent an upset loss to what was still a bottom-4 Brisbane team at that point.

That’s it. Kaput. Spud.

Cue a diabolical display against the Bombers at Marvel and the trademark grand Adelaide Oval bendover for Geelong in the ensuing fortnight and 11-4 was always going to be a Hindenburgian mirage.
