Not really sure where to post this so I guess I'll chuck it in here.

So many words could be used to describe how I feel tonight, but the best one is probably 'done'. Over the Hinkley reign every single year I've managed to find some sort of excuse to our woes that if we had just tidied up we could take the next step - "if only we'd kicked straight", "if only we cleaned up our forward entries", "if only we had another [insert player position X here]". I've tried to be optimistic, I've tried to maintain the belief every single season under Ken that we could make something of it come the pointy end, and it was ripe there for the taking tonight.

Home preliminary final, a weeks rest compared to the opposition, sleeping in our own beds, no compromised preparations compared to COVID and a fully fit list to pick from. We lost by 71 points. And my belief has run out.

I don't think I've ever felt this hollow about something football related before. During half time I sat in silence staring out over the field thinking about how Gray and Boak won't retire with a premiership, the young guns will be mentally shot for years to come, and we couldn't do it for Russell. Would be lying if I said I didn't bury my face in my mask and wipe away a few tears in that moment.

I feel for my Dad who's worked so hard to get my brothers and I memberships and tickets to the games over the years. He deserves better. We all sat in silence for the final 3 quarters and on the way home. Feel for those who felt the same.

No real point to this post I guess, just needed to get it all off my chest. I think I need to take a step back from footy for a while, being too emotionally invested in this team really isn't good for my mental. As much as I love the fabric of this club and always will, being emotionally shattered and exhausted year after year because of the current makeup has taken its toll. I'm sure I'll be back if CD weaves his magic during the trade period or when the 2022 preseason rolls around, but for now I hope you're all looking after yourselves and the little ones who take the losses a little harder.

Oh, and sack Hinkley.

The question though who would be the next coach.

If you’re looking right now you’d probably be looking at Voss, Lyon, Pyke, Kingsley, Buckley, Yze..

Or you wait till next year and have a red hot crack at Clarkson (but you risk another wasted year on Hinkley), but realistically I can’t see Clarkson leaving Victoria

No one really to get excited about

What?

It's literally the most exciting time to be in the hunt for a coach in league history.

Several big name former AFL head coaches on the market, including a few who have gotten teams to GFs. Buckley got Collingwood to a grand final and lost by a kick 3 years ago. Pyke was undeniably a great coach who coached a shit club and an average team to a grand final. Ross Lyon coached turgid football but he was a friendly bounce for Milne away from a premiership.

Several big name highly rated assistants going around at the moment as well.

I’ll take an inanimate carbon rod at this point…but seriously, what’s the risk? Who here actually likes being safe and mediocre? Because that’s what Ken is

Buckley is cursed, Lyons brand of footy is boring, Pyke is Hinkley 2.0

Personally the only name I would be interested in is Kingsley (not because of the port connection)

We will never win a premiership under Hinkley. He just isn't ruthless enough. He wants to be best mates.

If Hinkley sticks around for 2 more years he will destroy our young players and 2026 will be the earliest we will win flag but probably 2030.

This loss is actually worse than the 2007 GF loss. Geelong were a superior team who had 44 years and multiple grand final losses to get out of their system.

This was a shellacking at home in a PF. tribey put the list up in another thread and is the worst loss by a non Vic side playing a home PF.

Hinkley is a 3 times grand final loser as a player.

He is now a 3 times preliminary final loser as a coach destined never to make a grand final let alone win one.

Would you even want to make a GF under Ken? Chances are it would be similar to tonight.

If they gave him a a contract extension after a elimination final loss, why would they sack him after two consecutive top 2 finishes.. we are spineless as you said

I come in peace

Genuine question: any truth to the rumour that a prelim appearance triggers an extension for Hinkley?

Thanks

Has anyone else emotionally checked out to the point where you don't get that angry about shitful performances like this anymore?

We've been burnt that many times by this fraud yet nothing changes. There's only so much shit you can take before you just say 'meh', and stop caring. That's where I feel like I'm at, anyway.

I sat there quite calmly tonight as the calamity unfolded in front of me. So yes, i'm used to it and have learned to process it in real time.

I'll save you from having to sit through it. He doesn't know anything. He needs time to process.
At least now we know why he doesn't make any moves from the coach's box when the game turns to shit. He needs a few weeks to work out what went wrong.

No. I try. But shit like this and the norf 10 goal Ben brown game just cuts through.

If this game doesn't burn then I dunno

You can't say you didn't go into this game with hope.

I knew this was a chance of happening so I wasn't angry at the game. Seething a little inside, but there was a big sense of "yep, figures" about it
