I'm missing SS!!! (I only read usually, but... ) - glad I found this thread.

As someone who looks after another large forum on a volunteer basis (which co-incidently is also hosted on Bluecentral) Just wanted to put in positive post for the SS admin/mods. I think they are volunteers too are they not? We (the forum I admin) had reason to get Bluecentral to do a backup for us about 12 months ago - we needed it kept seperate to their std backups. They didn't take that long, once we had paid... They charge for pretty well anything extra and wont' do anything upfront.... On the whole I have found them helpful enough. backing a forum as large as SS yourself as admin, is possible, but not practical. Files way too large for download really.. so takes ages.. and always chance of crashing as you go etc..... (I am assuming SS as large as the one I look after which is about 1Gb in size....) You do need to rely on the ISP (when you are doing this voluntarily and money is limited). I would guess Bluecentral would have a backup they can reload for SS... the holdup must be somewhere else. BUT, again as a volunteer admin, I am very empathetic to their plight. I am sure they want SS backup as much as annyone else - actually more so (cause they don't need the flack and hassle I would be sure!) so I trust they are doing everything they can, the way they believe best. Any hold ups would be for good reasons. As volunteers - I guess they have a life outside SS (family, job etc!) they need to attend to as well.....

So... my support and trust is behind SS admin 100% I know they are doing what needs to be done.

I'd be stunned if it's BlueCentral, they're pretty much IAAS (Infrastructure as a service) down the line. They offer a couple of cloud apps, but aren't likely to take on something like BBS.

I don't know Battye & co, but if we're hosting with BlueCentral, then I'd assume our guys are likely responsible for patching, IIS/IHS/Apache/Whatever it is we use.

EDIT NOTE: SS Admins, this is not meant as a criticism of your work. It's understood you guys are volunteers, whose spare time enables our Saintsational habit. From here, there is only appreciation for what you do.

My objection has always been the lack of any sort of responsible management.

Umm, no.

Have better things to do with my time (like keeping websites running).

TBH, you're mad if system admin are wasting their time moderating.

They'd be mad if they didn't take your offer, JD.....A site hosted and maintained for free by a Saints supporter........

I don't think they'll take it.....the fear of losing one iota of control will not allow them to accept.

Would imagine some of the long term posters might revolt too. :D

I doubt the hosting is their issue as we've seen previously.

Personally I liked the site much better back when the Russians were posting pr0n. :)

But BakesFan what control are you talking about?

Surely if you are talking about Moderators, every forum has moderators. And if you thin the moderation at SS is heavy handed, don't hang about here too long, clowns like stinger et al would last about a minute here.

Really this "control" gripe is laughable to me. Nobody forces anyone to go to a forum.

Once you go to someones forum you play by their rules and dont whinge when they dont suit.

If you dont like it start your own forum or FB pagte as other disgruntled SS posters have done (one very successfully).

Not attempting to change your opinion on SS, but I think it is futile to complain about a forum and the way it is moderated, just dont post there.

I think the positives far outweigh the negatives especially the 5 players SS sponsors. Will be a shame if that funding is lost to the club and that connection is lost to supporters.

BakesFan...with the greatest respect, this "control" conspiracy theory really has no legs Im sorry. Ive not met battye personally but in my dealings with him Ive not seen one shred of the control freak you seem to be painting him as

JD, youre quite right..tech admin should not be moderating. When battye agreed to become an admin, it was purely to maintain/improve the technical aspects of the site. He had no interest in being involved in the minutae of moderating
He was forced to do some moderating when the number of active mods became thin at one point for various reasons

Just IMO but I think the admins would jump at the chance of free hosting by a fan if the current arrangement was to prove untenable

Joffaboy: Youre dead right, SS is a hippie commune compared to this Forum...and this Forum is a hippe commune compared to Saints Footy on FB. Again though, I reckon Ive been around SS long enough and met enough of the mods personally to think that theres no issue of "control"

I very rarely post there anymore, JB....... I can't understand the way it's run/maintained, or the way it's moderated.... and when anyone tries to ask questions about either, they're slapped down like a petulant child....

If you don't believe that a site absence of 2+ weeks shows a complete failing failing by the admin, then I won't try to change you're mind.... I believe the owner of the site simply doesn't care enough to maintain it properly....

I'm pretty sure a little over $3,000.00 was raised a couple of years ago to keep it afloat (MM can probably verify the amount raised from forum 'members' )
It seems the owner has taken a cheap option to maintain SS, and has continued to forsake site security, despite several problems in the past.

Negligence or apathy.... you decide.

Actually the amount was $1203 of which $1155 has been paid to Blue Central over the past 2+ years to pay for the hosting.

Not a single cent of the donated money has gone to anybody other than Blue Central.

Bakes, as Joffaboy said, SS is very tolerant of questioning, and I in my time, mod as a mod and before/after have never seen anyone "slapped down like a petulant", even when some posters did indeed behave like petulant children IMO lol.

If you want slapping down, wander over to Saints Footy facebook and question the Admin there about how he runs his site as you have done about SS. I promise you that you will be blocked from contributing further post haste, no warnings, no emails, no nothing. I'll happily supply you the names of a dozen people its happened to. Ive been an active critic of the site for reasons that I wont go into here (and Im sure this lil speech will get back to him lol) but I still happily admit he does provide a service, a lot of people like it, AND he sponsors a player. You just have to play by his rules without question

Yep..SS is a hippie commune I tells ya..its chalk and cheese

Can never understand how mod numbers could ever be a problem given the number of regulars that would be more than capable.

Anyway, none of my concern really. I wasn't aware it was down until I saw the thread.

id like to know how certain posters can still be allowed to post under the same username after so many years of abusing other posters....

been slapped on the wrist numerous times but just keeps on baiting, abusing and being a total nuffie

obviously these posters have either:
a connection with the club
donate lots and lots of cash...maybe around 2 million:rolleyes:
or know the 'owners' of the ss name

i have no ****ing idea but its amazing to see them still there

granted, its all show and pomp and some times we all like the bitching, arguments and have a good cackle at them
hey sometimes we even join in because they are so infuriating and you just need to say something
but when the 'rules' are broken weekly you end up asking the question:

WTF is going on here???


start another place up??

yeah we've done that already

This thread is why saintsational sucks, I've been there for many a year and still post at times but this thread really outlines why I dislike the joint.

Nearly 300 posts in a thread, a lot of it just 3 or 4 people slinging mud at each other and the thread is now totally off topic.

I don't care how much more traffic ss gets, I'll take this board any day of the week.

Point taken RE.

However the fact there is a huge amount of traffic means there's still plenty to like about the forum once you ignore certain posters and their tedious mud slinging.

It's the high volume of posts by reasonable persons that appeals to me and many others. And as long as the good continues to dominate the crap I'll strongly support the site.

The Internet Sheriff’s Department has released photos of the suspect believed to be involved in the shutdown of popular StKilda Fan site Saintsational.

The suspect is quite round and occasionally bitter. The suspect was last seen leaving the MCG saying "I told you so".

“We have received numerous tips info from as far away as Big Footy, Saints Footy, Big Sainters, True Sainters, True Footy, Saints Central and some chick in Frankston who knows how to post photos on the internet." said Internet Sheriff’s Sgt. Jennifer Love Hewitt. Each and every tip received will be checked out, she said.

Anyone with information about the identity of the man, the forum or its operator’s whereabouts is asked to contact the concerned posters of Saintsational via the internet.
