I’d be more concerned Nick himself gets redrafted.

The Herald Sun has reported it wasn’t the first meeting between Lyon and Bassat in recent months after the duo had “shared bottles of red wine until late into the night”.
So that’s why Robbo was so pissed ( pun intended) at this news - he wasn’t invited to join them.

No s(c)oop for you!

First time since Parkin.

Prior to that it has happened a few times:

Charlie Sutton was sacked as Footscray coach after 1957 and 1968.

Bill Stephen resigned as Fitzroy coach in 1957, returned in 1965 before resigning again in 1970, then returning again in 1979 before retiring in 1980.

John Kennedy resigned from Hawthorn in 1963 and returned in 1967.

Bob Rose was sacked by Collingwood in 1971 and returned in 1985 before retiring in 1986.

Alex Jesaulenko resigned as Carlton coach in 1979 and returned as coach in 1989 before being sacked in 1990.

Tony Jewell was sacked by Richmond after 1981 and 1987.

Given Ross's history I'm not sure even that will be enough.

But if the deal was done why spend 4 hours talking to him?

Ross, do you want the job? Yes OK done deal. OK we'll talk with you and your agent to sort out terms.

But in the meantime, can you do us a favour and hang around for a few hours to make it look like we're still thinking about it and haven't lied about how, when and why we got rid of Ratten.
My guess is ironing out contract clauses with him and any offsides he wants to bring in. Timeframe, figures, etc

Too much to ask that our potential new coach has an excellent pre-season himself and comes back fit and firing?
Could afford to lose a few kilos and come back in good nick and really looking the part. Might have to cut back on the reds but he’ll be able to afford Jenny Craig.

Ratts never looked healthy, to me.

I don’t, I’m sure there is a process, I’m also pretty confident it’s already started. I’m only backing up that it happens and if it by chance spits out someone other than Ross are you all going to admit that maybe it was a good call? Or just sook that it wasn’t Ross? Cause I can assure you if Ross gets appointed I’ll back him as loud as anyone else here because I’ll be confident he was the right call.
With all due respect…think we’ve done the process talk to death yeah?

Not going to lie.

I’m loving seeing posters come out of the woodwork because of this.

My old man suffers from kidney failure. Can barely get to a game these days. But wants to sign up again knowing it’s a donation and he probably will be lucky to get to a game.

I was at the point of ending my 20 year membership and not renewing my little man’s and even considering letting him make a decision instead of bringing him up as a saint.

But if it’s Ross (again, I believe it is) I’m over the ******* moon and want the season to start tomorrow.

It’s not that people are expecting finals tomorrow and a flag if it’s him. It’s as simple as people believe that we have a legitimate coach and program. No Bs anymore. Just a genuine hard ass with high standards.

Which is all we want as saints fans.

I’m one of those posters… used to be active here and in SS 10 years ago… kept my membership all these years but hardly been to a game since having young uns.

This year my 10yo son has been getting interested and we went to 6-7 games together. He loves Max King…

When I told him Ratts has been sacked he said… “oh, that’s a shame I really like him.”

I said, “I do too.”

“So why did he get sacked?”

“Remember how we started losing all those games from mid-season on?”

“You mean like that terrible Essendon match?”

“Yes. The club believe that Ratts couldn’t get the best out of the team any more.”

“Oh, ok, so that means they’ll get someone better who will, right?”

“Yeah, that’s the plan son.”

“Ok, well that makes sense.”

This exchange pretty much says it all really…

That would have been a wild time if there was 1960's bigfooty.

Melbourne were reigning premiers in 1964 and won their first 8 matches in 1965.

They lost their next 4 matches, then Smith was sacked after his relationship with the MCC committee had become toxic over many years.

In short, the Committee had a gutful of Smith since the 1950s but he kept winning Flags. After he criticised an umpire after a recent loss in 1965, and was threatened with legal action by the umpire, the committee used that as an excuse to sack him.

It was regarded as the football story of the century. Ron Barassi (who was captain coach of Carlton at the time) was a Legacy child and was bought up by Smith in the family home. Barassi was so upset at Smith’s sacking that he drove around to the home of Melbourne Secretary Jim Cardwell and physically bailed him up. Half the Melbourne team threatened to go on strike unless Smith was reinstated.

Checker Hughes coached Melbourne against lowly NM that weekend and Melbourne lost easily. Smith was reinstated 24 hours later but the damage was done. Melbourne missed the finals and spiralled down.

Sorry if I waffled, but that was a quick summary of it. Big Footy back then would have exploded.
