I watched it and felt reassured that Bassett is the man to lead us forward. I'm curious what the review finds. I thought Bassett was refreshingly honest and tried to answer the questions.

But the media's take is the opposite and if anything he was probably a bit too honest.

Ultimately, if we didn't think Ratts was the right man for the job then better to make the decision now than in 18 months time.

What I thought was hilarious was Damo saying our presser and decision making was worse than Essendons absolute s**t show.

Kidding surely

I didn’t hear whatever it was that Purple said but, honestly, when was the last time he had an opinion that was somewhat insightful and interesting rather then just some sensationalist crap.

Pay him no attention.

Loved it

Only part i found a bit second rate was giving rate a chance to present his case forward and if it was good to potentially keep the gig. Didn't need to say that part at all. If the review was that he needed to go, then don't bother asking him to do a last effort pitch to keep his job.

I think it's all about having a transparent process and would have helped Ratten understand the decision.

Otherwise we would have just completely blindsided him. We needed to give him at least a chance to respond.

I just had a long chat to my mate who is very close to Ratts and he said at this point he cant tell me the reason he was sacked but said when he tells me in a week or two when things settle down he said i would laugh as its that petty.
Anyone thinking its to do with Hunter well he told me its nothing to do with it , Ratts was told around 8.00 last night so it sure didn't take long for word to get out.
My mate said Brett is just gutted but knew what he was getting himself into , also my contact doesn't believe anyone specific is being targeted for the new Head coach role
Not sure being a diabolical game day coach is a petty reason.

I am not disputing your story, but it is possible Ratts took one flippant comment and ran with that as the major reason he was fired. I would be extremely confident his game plan and inability to inspire the group was a major factor.

A couple thoughts, 1. I found it odd how Lethers stated the decision was all his after, going on about how review was done with Basset and presumably Noble too.

2. If we are going t rebuild and say build around King, this kills me to say but If we bottom out for the next two years/3.
ages of players below

Sinclair Age 27 - 30
Steele 26-29
Rowan Marshal 26 -29
Callum Wilkie 26-29

I think f we do enter a rebuild we need to trade at least two of these guys for another 2 top 10 picks to adjust our young core. Also how would weconvince these guys to stay. Makes me terribly sad.

Some people only want to see the worst in our club.

Would suggest I'm normally the one that plays it positively.

We give him a contract extension to put his mind at ease for the second half of the year? But it wasn't really because we thought he was good?

What a joke.

Lethers trying to separate himself from the fact that he has been part of the same footy department for how many years? The guy was part of the team responsible for our trading/drafting/coaching.

They still can't get the messaging right about the state of the list. Does it have holes? Is it a contender? They can't even be on the same page as the List Management team. Can't even say that with a new coach we won't go backwards.

"Fair to say we didn't give Brett the best resources available"

"We aren't going to talk about the findings"

If you are going to make such moves and they've been sure for the last 5 days. You have the communication ready for members to go on the same day as the presser.

There was something decent enough for Ratts to be sacked. But let's give him 5 days to convince us otherwise. But not be prepared for the eventuality that we will be parting ways?

They both were part of the contract extension. Both should leave.

I think it's impossible for a club to look amazing after sacking a coach.

Ultimately you only know years down the track if it was the right decision and by then (even if it was the correct call) the media will have forgotten how much they criticized the decision anyway.

You can't run a football club trying to please the media. This was the much harder decision, so I think I respect it because it shows some cajones.

Said it was incompetent as Barham at Essendon.

Can always trust purple to lay the boots in. Surprisingly he goes easy on North. Complete spanner.
Yeah because a CEO for 24 hours and board members embracing an unrepentant drug cheat going unpunished is similar…
He’s called purple because he a knob that fails to drain, like the swamp scum he is.

You have thrown part statements out there.

He said we would get the key components of the review in the next few days.

They said they would talk about the process but wouldn’t share that today - which is clearly because they wanted to make it about moving on from Ratten and making it clear we think he is a top bloke. As opposed to shitting on him as a nobody.

think Bassat spoke well and owned the mistakes and seemed to give a clear indication of care for Ratts in what is obviously a very tough situation.

However, I am not sold on Lethers at all, I don’t understand how he can be the head of football and oversee everything that has gone on in his own department, to then weasel his way up to CEO and essentially absolve himself of majority of blame in a review of the department he oversaw. It just doesn’t fill me with confidence. Hopefully he’s more suited to the CEO role instead of head of football is all I can say.

Fair enough, not my first choice but I can see why they'd go with him. To be honest I don't really care about the blokes who couldn't get a look in? Would rather win a flag with a "clique".
IMO clique-type “groups within groups” had a significant amount to do with our lack of development around the 2009-2012 period.

Sure, we all love a flag, we’d probably do unspeakable things for one, but that’s not the way to do it, OR to achieve sustained success…

Seems like he was too soft on the players and lacked leadership qualities.

Brutal decision but looks like the correct one.

I thought they spoke very honestly and clearly regarding the decision.

Feels to me like they have the next coach lined up.

I thought the press conference went as well as it could have. I am confident the club have made the right decision for the right reasons. If we have ever have a chance of sucess that Bassatt & Lethlean are the right pair to lead the club going forward.

The club obviously had there concerns re Ratten and wanted him to get there, but the review made it obvious that he wasnt going to make it.

I made the mistake of listening to Barrett after the conference. He is such a gutless sniper and always a negative reporter who has a nasty edge. He historically cans our club and cant find a positive or nice thing to say!
