Re: The Trade Thread

Riewoldt. Koschitzke. Walsh. Archer. Stanley. Johnson. Siposs. Gamble. Lynch. All trying to get a gig in our forward line as the the three talls.

Im afraid to say i dont think Johnson, Gamble and to a lesser extent Stanley, Archer and lynch will ever be the players to lock down a key forward position in the immediate to mid-term future

Re: The Trade Thread

Fev will not go in the draft - he'll have to wait until the rookie draft, and probably at the end of that when the guys are selected to train for an open spot (Richmond and Hawthorn did it last off-season).

Re: The Trade Thread

True, not sure if it's 18 year olds or players new to AFL level that have to be on 2 years. Pattison was only on one

First time national draftees get 2 years, except where they are over 23 (mature-aged).

Whilst having Fev train with a club in the lead-up to the rookie draft would be ideal, we all know he can play footy (not sure what training would show). Clubs might be tempted to use a late ND pick to get him in early to make sure he does a full preseason (rather than waiting until the rookie draft which is nearly Xmas).

The interest of the Saints will depend heavily on where they think Stanley and Walsh are at (whether they can develop into regulars in 2012). I think the club would have ruled a line through the others as being anything more than depth in the near term.

Hanging out with the team would probably be more telling than training with the team, and he doesnt even need to be on the list to do that.

Re: The Trade Thread

What are your thoughts on the Goddard to GWS rumor for Jaeger O'Meara? I see it as a win win trade as O'Meara is the elite player for his age in the country. It's like getting a number 1 draft pick that still has a year of development.

Not really worth much given Goddard is still contracted for next year.

Re: The Trade Thread

Goddard is worth much more then a 17 year old kid, no matter how could his potential could be....

Re: The Trade Thread

Exactly, the only way to get mini-draft picks is to trade contracted players. Trust me I rate Goddard as a top 3 player in the AFL, just wanted to get your thoughts on this given the rumors.

Saints should also be looking very hard at Crouch in the mini-draft also. Good contested player and can play inside and outside(showed by being named HBF in the all Australian team). Would suit Ross Lyons game plan perfectly. Should only cost Gilbert + 1st round pick, maybe a fringe player to sweeten the deal.

That's the thing, it's a trade, not compensation picks.

I dont like it cos I think we got one more chance next year. But if were gonna lose him it sounds like this kid (plus a couple other picks maybe?) might be worth it. And I couldn't blame BJ tbh...

Understand that but this is an auction really. If we put Goddard up for trade and someone swooped with a sweeter deal late, that's effectively sealed his fate without us getting what we want in return.

Re: The Trade Thread

Thats exactly right, even though you trade your still not guaranteed the first selection in the mini draft. However you would think Goddard would almost guarantee the first choice considering how elite he is. But it's all cheap speculation. Its most likely BJ and Ross and Gilbert will all sign new contracts after this season or early next season.

Re: The Trade Thread

Would you be able to play the 17 year old next season? Still wouldnt trade Goddard for anyone.

Not till the year after. I personally can't see alot of people agreeing to the trade, but the rumor on the Draft&Trading board is it's a chance to happen

Re: The Trade Thread

The rumour is beyond horseshit, it is tantamount to making a statement that Riewoldt is pissing off because 1m became 2m and the promise of a tanning salon because fact of the matter is that players who want out walk.

We saw it with Ablett.
We saw it with Ball.

There are "untouchables" at every club in regards to trades, hence Pav still being at the Dockers despite numerous attempts to lure him elsewhere and Goddard is one of those said untouchables for the club, as such the only way he is leaving the Saints is if he walks out on his contract at this stage. And hey, sure that's a chance (however minute) to happen, but is it realistic? Hell no. Fact of the matter is that Goddard will be treated as an untouchable by the St Kilda football club and anything to the contrary is clutching at straws to create media in any trade scenario.

I mean shit, weren't we supposed to lose Armitage & Gilbert to the GC already?

Re: The Trade Thread

I don't care how much hype comes with him, I do not like the idea of trading Goddard for a 17 year old who can't even play next season. Even if we were to contemplate trading him, a straight swap is ripping us off big time stylie.

Re: The Trade Thread

Only to be even considered if we are going into rebuild mode, which for the love of god I hope we don't do.

Not even then, people get into the opinion that in order to get youth everyone above X age has to go whilst they're either too old or still have some remaining currency, however you need a nucleus and even spread of age otherwise you end up like GC (fits & spurts) or sides like Richmond, North and Melbourne currently in either bottoming out heavily to completely redo a list (Richmond & Melbourne) or persisting with a "dotted" nucleus (backman here, midfielder there, utility type in Cuba) and fill the rest in like North.

There is no need to trade out players like Goddard in any situation to do with AFL football. Period.

Looks like hutchy must post on the drafts and trading board then cause that rumor is about as credible as any rubbish he'd come up with

Re: The Trade Thread

Boys please don't shoot the messenger! The deal on Draft&Trading board was Goddard for O'Meara and pick 4 in this years draft.

Just as an outsider looking in I think your club needs to make a decision. If you choose to rebuild, that deal is too good to pass up. It's significantly better than what West Coast got for Judd.

But if you want to keep having a crack in September then you should tell GWS to get ****ed and stay away from your superstar.

EDIT: GWS don't even have pick 4 in this years draft.

Re: The Trade Thread

Jaegar O'Meara is already clearly making it known he wants to stay in WA.

Im not giving up Goddard, who is without doubt St Kilda's next captain or anyone near his callibre to get access to guy that's more than likely gonna wanna jet back home asap.

From what i understand, if GWS doesn't strike deals for these mini draft picks, then they lose all rights to the kids. Simply they have to make deals. Have to. So really, every club should be offering low because if they don't accept then that's GWS' loss. No need to be throwing Sheeds pots of gold.

Leave him to Freo.

If we're going to be throwing stars out the door Jon Patton would be a lot more relevant to our needs.

Still think we're good for another shot at it if we keep our top liners, dump some baggage in the 22 that's not gonna take us anywhere and bring in the quality kids (yes we do have some) for a more prolonged stay in the senior squad.
