So what does GWS get for trading down?

A 2 spot upgrade on 16 to 14 and a F2nd.

Not really that appealing if I was GWS.

Pretty much. If the guy they want at 7 is there at 10 then essentially 16 up to 14 and our F2 (approx pick 20) for free. Trades don’t generally have massive upside for all parties but there’s enough there as an incentive. Clubs regularly squabble over far smaller margins than that in trades. But as mentioned the GWS angle is the least clear..

The deal I believe will happen is our F2nd and change for Sydneys pick 18 after Sydney grab it from North. Its them and Gold Coast who have been spoken about as the people to get back into the 15-35 range. I think with Gold Coast and all the bids likely to happen later then people expect and later then they should they will have assets left to give away and our future picks are worth the most in any discussions

I only want to trade our F1 if the other side basically thinks we will be shithouse and are valuing it at pick 1-2 (ie, paying overs). I dont want it if its just pick 7 for Curtin. I could live with it if the club genuinely thinks Curtin will stack up with a top 3 pick next year but gee whiz I dont really trust our recruiters judgment that well atm.

I can see the attraction for the sugar hit now but imagine the sour taste in our mouths this time next year and we've given up pick 1 and our first pick is coming in at 30 (like our second round is this year), especially if Curtin hasnt shot the lights out.

If we end up with pick 1 we could probably leverage a trade for pick 4 + pick 10 next year.
That means that rather than a Finn O'Sullivan we might get a Jagga Smith (if we're lucky) or a Smillie/Hargrave as our first selection and pair them with a Travaglia (ala Leake this year) who is also great mates with Reid (who was his captain this year at the Pioneers) and won the Pioneers B&F. Would definitely help with retention, no?
Suffice to say, it is a lot to give up. You've got to wonder if it's worth it for the WA factor and the year of development.
Now if we miraculously push out of the bottom couple of teams and would've ended up with pick 4 next year it's basically an even trade. But that seems unlikely.

The decision to offer our F1 to secure Curtin would be a joint decision among the football department incorporating Massey, O’Brien, Bell, Simpson, Nisbett and Pyke

It wouldn’t be something taken lightly and I suspect Pyke might well have been the strongest proponent based on his interview on SEN. He seemed quite bullish in the need to bring in as much high end talent as possible as soon as possible
