Naughton was drafted as a defender. If Tom Boyd never retired he'd prob still be a defender.
Possible he'll end up back there given they have both Ugle-Hagan & Darcy coming through

What has that got to do things when comparing list ages? People saying they have 15 over the 30s I say we are not far behind on 11 and if ash houli didn't retire we would have 13!
People are also saying we brought in Tarrant because we have another tilt so why are Geelong any different?
Were are you getting that we have 11 players over 30? We have 8 in 2022, including Tarrant

Edwards, Riewoldt, Tarrant, Cotchin, Martin, Grimes, Lambert & Pickett

Rubbish.
He actually throws himself into the contest.
And his size(lack of)makes it much easier to (a) swoop on the ball(b)attract a head high tackle.

who says he doesn't? When it’s his time to go he goes. I’d expect him to contest it when he needs to in his part of the ground.

that’s very different to him taking centre bounces and ball ups. Personally don’t mind him taking the odd one if needed but as a permanent move into the midfield I think we lose too much with his other weapons.

Agree, don’t think he has the frame to be a centre square mid but has all the tools to play a similar game to lambert, off the back of the square and as that high half forward link up

Lynch Caddy Prestia all will be 30 next year anything else?

Baker is too little too play full time mid

He’s 173cm. Neale is 177. Serong is 178cm. He’s not taking overhead marks, and he’s tough as nails, so not sure why being 173cm would be an issue …? We’ve got big bodied mids in RCD, Graham and Dusty. And tough nuts in Cotchin and Prestia. We need a quality midfielder pronto to contend in 2022.

it’s not his strength. He’s a modern day outside utility. Bit of back, midfield/wing and forward

indispensable to us in that role. But let’s throw him in as an inside mid and see him bashed

It’s like nobody watched the GWS game earlier in the year. 33 touches with 16 contested in his only ever game playing midfield - against one of he biggest and toughest midfields in the league…. with no support.

Laird is 177cm. Neale 177cm. Serong 178cm. Why does 4cm down to Baker’s 173cm make any difference …?

I’m not suggesting he plays 100% inside mid. I suggest he plays a mid/fwd role rotating with Dusty and Bolton. We need class up forward and around the ball ….. we don’t need backline reinforcements.

Prestia is 175. Brent Harvey was 171. He'd be fine if that's where he ends up. I reckon play him forward with Stack though. Huge upgrades on Aarts and Castagna.

Neale weighs 85kg
Serong weighs 85kg
Laird weighs 77kg
Prestia weighs 82kg
Harvey was 75kg and played majority of his career in an era when midfielders weren't as big

Baker weighs 72kg

Baker will get pummelled playing as an inside midfielder full time.

And Richmond has 3 flags to many more 30 year olds Geelong no flags, doughnuts, bombed out every year pussys.
Tigers 4 picks in top 28,Geelong doughnuts, none ,not one.
100%....wegetpumped reminds me of my kid who spends their pocket money on lollies that they wanted, ate them and cried that they have no money left. We got the rewards and our window is slowly closing.... Its what happens.

Im all for getting Tarrant because it such a huge and obvious need.but fmd list management and recruiting are the reason why we have to go out and get Tarrant at 32.

I think our succession planning in a few areas should have been better.

FFS we have Balta at a good pick #25 but we hoped he was a fwd to start with.Thank god he has ended up a defender because we would be up the creek totally with Astbury gone. our better big kpds Rance 18, Balta 25 and Astbury 33. theres a message there. hmm and our investments since

We invest 63 Miller 72 Garthwaite and 54 Nyuon and we wonder why there has been so little coming thru in this area.We have had years to do something about this and done little a few token picks hoping for a diamond in the rough.

Im gunna keep saying it yes the current establishment has got three flags and done most things right but to just say and intimate that they have got everything right is a plain nonsense.

Why can't we question the few things they have got wrong?

In fairness they’d still have expected Rance and Astbury to be holding down those defensive key posts, so it’s not surprising we didn’t focus on that area in recent drafts. Even when Rance retired we had Astbury, Balta, Garthwaite and Miller, so they were probably hoping Garthwaite had the goods…..but he doesn’t…. then Astbury retired early.

So Tarrant buys us time and I’m sure it will be a focus this draft and in FA and trading decisions.

Agree if all goes well we can play finals. My argument all along is that we should and also need to back our young players for us to do so.
I’m not against that either , I just see FB being such a specialist role that this positively impacts our structure releasing others to play more attacking football . I don’t support acquiring fringe mids that stand in way of rcd Martyn Dow or early draftees . Opportunities will open up for miller and eventually Biggy and Ryan , time on their side

I saw McBean on the telly a few times. Looked pretty good for Glenelg. Where that put him at AFL level I can't say.
Is he taking more lead out marks these days , I seem to recall so many of his vfl goals kicked over the head in the goal sq , off the ground or a snap from a pack , almost anything but an overhead mark

Loose ball gets count as contested possessions. That's where Bakes gets them.

RCD played inside mid that night and had arguably his best game. Vlastuin and Aarts also spent time in there.

My concern is that current league leaders that have put some space on us have huge bustling mids , fighting back with a squad of 173-177 mids won’t cut it . We need to address this at the draft , baker could play that lambo role , but that’s not really a primary inside mid role

It’s a classic case of ‘damn lies and statistics’. Lynch, Caddy and Prestia turn 30 AFTER the season ends on October 31st, Sept 28th and Oct 12th. So for the duration of season 2022 they are all 29yo…..hardly due for the football scrapheap.

Baker laid 6 tackles and got 7 clearances and attended 18 centre bounces. RCD attended 24. Graham attended 11.

I’m not suggesting Baker plays solely as an inside mid. I’m suggesting he becomes part of the midfield rotation and changes as a mid-fwd with Bolton and Martin. If Baker plays more midfield minutes it allows 2 of Bolton, Martin or Baker to be forward - we need to look past Castagna and Aarts … there’s no flag coming if they are both in the team.

We cannot win the flag in 2022 if we don’t inject something new into our midfield… and our youngsters are not ready to influence games to the level required for a flag… Baker is. Other than B Smith Dogs and Demons don’t have any 19-23yo as key midfielders in their GF teams. So no reason why we should expect anything but support roles from our young mids for another 1-2 seasons.

That’s IF we are planning for a flag - if we are out of contention come mid-season 2022 then I’m all for injecting more midfield youth immediately.

Baker proved in that GWS game he can play full time as a mid. He beat up a big bodied midfield with a heap of talent that night. No reason he can't play second banana to Prestia.

I really think we need Dusty to go back into the middle predominantly next year.

As much as we all want Dusty to play perma fwd, reality is, thats probably atleast a year away maybe 2.

We don't need to reinvent players in new positions, especially those that aren't physically able to match it in those positions. What we need to do is back in the likes of RCD Dow Ross & Martyn that we've recruited to play those roles and hit the draft and bring in a couple more draftees to continue to build that next group
