Hello Tiger fans!

The embedded resources below are kept up to date by the trade board mods (as much as possible – we are human after all). Enjoy!

tugga you may like to sticky or merge this post, move it to the start of the thread (so the sticky post doesn't rotate if a post is deleted before it), or copy it to your draft thread.

Well, no, the bottom line is the exact details of why he sought a trade in the first place.

I don't think we can regard it as a fact that he was ever going to be given an opportunity to replace Nank or shift him to the #2 slot - for now at least, that also falls into the realm of speculation.

We may well find out from the horses' mouth when he does his first 'trade steal of the year' ala Tom Hickey interview in late March/early April. ;)
At the end of the day, the reasons don’t really matter, Soldo like CCJ asked for a trade for more opportunities. He is gone, nothing else matters now and all the talking won’t change a thing. Good luck to Ivvy and let’s hope we use the draft picks wisely.

Let’s be logical.. from his manager:

“Ivan, you can fight for the #1 ruck position against Richmond’s triple Premiership captain on your remaining 1-year deal”

Or ….

“Ivan, Port are offering a 4-year deal worth $2.4m and you’ll be the #1 ruck”.

FFS… on what planet would he try his luck at Richmond? He does his knee and his career is over end of 2024. He has injury problems or can’t hold down a senior position his value goes down significantly.

He does his knee at Port or can’t command the #1
ruck spot and he’s got $2.4m in the bank!

Of course he decided he wanted out … and Richmond did the right thing letting him go and we got a decent trade in the process.

Will need the 2.4 mill just to hang onto his missus

He was a free agent, totally different situation. We would have to trade all we’ve got and more for Cadman, it won’t happen imo.
You're catastrophising TF - there's so much of it done on this site nowadays.

It depends what we've got to offer. And a lot of that depends upon where we finish ladder-wise in 2024. There's a huge difference between having a Pick 3 or a Pick 13 to offer up.

For some reason, if it were Collingwood or Geelong that were chasing him, punters always favour their chances of getting it done. But when it's us, so many of our posters here seem to suddenly go into minnows mode.

Young players want to play for Richmond, and their managers can usually get it done if we really want them.

But speculation is more fun than dealing with facts

Couldn't agree more on it being the right move for him, haven't argued otherwise, just that from my guess of what we offered him, he was worth us doing more to keep.

"Liam Baker was a huge one for them last year, ended up staying back came pretty close to leaving. In the end they came really, really strongly for him.

"I think he'll be targeted again by the Eagles and probably Fremantle too. He's pretty settled in Victoria and could well be their next skipper as well, but I think he's one the Eagles will go pretty strongly at again next year."

They can have 2 WA premiership players in Kmac and Pickett if they stump up a bag of cheese supreme doritos. Just leave Baker alone.

You went out of your way to quote and mock my opinion.

I've exclusively used your own words and there's really nothing which can be taken out of context when you're simply measuring a player's worth.

As far as I'm concerned, I have every right to spend half a minute in the archives finding and quoting what I already knew - that when it was fashionable on the board to pump up Soldo's tyres, you were an enthusiastic tyre pumper.

You even spent time 'correcting' others as to his high proven value as a player if they posted to the contrary.

Sorry if you don't like being reminded of these embarrassing episodes of blatant, easily proven hypocrisy now it's convenient for you to insist that he's practically worthless and always has been, but you really did bring it on yourself, from my perspective.

Congratulations on stopping digging. :thumbsu:
You do realize this started by me simply pointing out that you were arguing Soldo's value etc based on one game, in which I did politely?

Dude you are so desperate, please dont stop :)

Should be our captain. If that’s the case he won’t be going anywhere.

Comp wont be that good if Baker goes to West Coast, he isn't a free agent and I doubt West Coast will be willing to part with what will likely be pick 1

baker would be shite at a club like e girls or dickers

I’d say baker will go home next year.
unless they offer him money he can't say no to I doubt it.

WA boys don't seem as prone to homesickness as others. Especially country boys from WA, as most of their mates are in the bush, not living in Perth, probably the same for family, so moving back "home" isn't what its like when a Vic boy wants to move close to mummy for her home cooked meals and so she can do her washing.

Fair point but I think he will go back.

Even just taking that out of the equation, Bakes appears to be someone who loves the lads at the footy club, and whilst he easily makes friends at another, he doesn't seem like the guys would want to move.

It's nearly like hes playing country footy with his mates, and doesn't want to go to a rival club, he just happens to get paid a shit load of money to do so.

You do realize this started by me simply pointing out that you were arguing Soldo's value etc based on one game,

Hardly, I used the Melbourne game as the most recent, best example against top opposition, then pointed out he achieved virtually the same game ranking a fortnight before and had gone 100+ on seven other occasions from very limited opportunities as a #1 ruck.

And as for my assessment of his worth being based on one game, do I really need to quote you more times from the past saying he's a highly valuable footballer who you rank alongside Nank - an assessment from an era well before his recent far more elite game ratings?

Because apparently you were able to form that past opinion based on significantly less than what I've used to highlight his worth.

in which I did politely?

"Dude, one game FFS haha" -
doesn't count as polite where I come from, it reads as overt mockery.

Ironically, mocking an opinion you apparently forgot you once held yourself.

And even more ironically, all that's happened to Soldo in between then and now is injury and a subsequent recovery to career high peak form.

Form way above anything that he had displayed back when you were 'correcting' other posters to argue that he was Nank's equal, or at the least very close to it.

Gold. :D

Apologies, I didnt realise such an aggressive poster would be so sensitive, sorry I hurt you.

Again, posts from years ago without context are a very limp argument especially when you only chose the ones that suit your narrative.

Guys come on, time to move on from Soldo we are all tigers here and no need to be throwing barbs at each other.

As many know his cousin I know well. He told me Ivan loves Richmond but he's 28 next year and a 4-year offer, No 1 ruck spot, and 2+ mill was the deciding factor.

Providing each of their strengths, without favouiring one. Soldo's tap work is better, and so is his forward marking. But Nank is better around the ground, plays aggressively, gets to contest to contest, and takes relieving marks in the back line. Can get his 20+ disposals and basically plays like another mid. He's the captain and is our No 1 ruck, and that wasn't going to change.

This is what I wrote below when the trade went down to his cousin in our group chat with Balta's dad, uncle, and Colina. I played a level bat and was honest in how I saw the whole trade.

Thats it. As good as Soldo was becoming, we will strive ahead. I am actually happy for him as he now has the opportunity to show his wares as the main man. With that comes expectations and scrutiny from the port fans. I'm sure he'll take it in his stride. I try and look at this objectively on both sides and not just on Soldo, for Ivan he gets a good contract with Port.

He will be 28 early next year and has a good 5 years as ports No 1 ruck. No doubt he will be on more coin at port than at Richmond. He's not going to leave unless he's been offered a lot more money and say a 4 year contract.

For Richmond, they did wanna keep him but the offer by port was too good to refuse. Had Soldo left next year as a free agent and let's say we got a 2nd round compo pick, we would lose that if we brought anyone in as a FA. So the two 2nd rounders (41), and freos future 2nd (likely mid-20s) was the clincher from Richmond's viewpoint. This puts us in a position of strength in next year's draft which by all reports is strong.

For Soldo, being the No. 1 ruck, a 4-year deal at almost 2.5 million, was an offer he couldn't refuse. Secures his future.

Both Richmond and Ivan come out on top and should be happy with the end result. Onwards and upwards for both in 2024

Cheers for the insight, AT, and you're right, we got a better deal than if we'd left things to next year (I had actually not factored the FA compensation loss angle into my thinking) and Soldo almost certainly has a far brighter future at Port than he would have with us.

Back however many pages ago it was, my original point was that he was well worth doing all the things we didn't do to keep him.

By far the best our midfield unit looked last season (or for several seasons for that matter) was in the Melbourne game, if we hadn't let ourselves down elsewhere we would have led by 7-8+ goals going into the 4Q and the game would have been over. We outplayed their midfield for a lot of the game, put them on the ropes turning their #1 strength against them and Soldo was the crucial player in that performance.

A week later, with Nank back as the #1, we conceded the entire season in half a dozen centre bounce contests against the Dogs. In the time Soldo was rucking, we outscored them for that game.

That's what we gave up and with every respect to yourself and all parties involved, I can't be happy with that end result. Port will most certainly go upwards if Soldo stays fit and plays, we'll just go onwards.
