The way I'm reading between the lines, it goes like this:

1. Howard plays a blinder against St Kilda in Shanghai. It's at this point in time that he pops up on their radar as a great option to pursue for relatively cheap by offering him a massively front ended deal while Max King is still on his base draft contract wage. They present this to Howard's agent, who presents it to Howard.

2. Howard's existing contract has incentives built in around him playing as a defender - intercept marks, spoils etc - incentives he won't be able to reach if he's playing as a forward. Both the club and his agent know this, so they understand that they have to rework his contract anyway. It's at this point that his agent drops St Kilda's offer on the table - with the permission of Howard - and says that Port needs to come close to this mark with the new deal.

3. Port doesn't come to the party. Howard and his agent come up with a gameplan where he will ask for a trade in the last three days of the trade period, when they know that there's not enough time to maximise value for players. Howard says to the coaches in his exit meeting that he thinks he's better as a defender (due to the incentives in his contract) - even though the coaches say that his future is as a forward. This raises a massive red flag because it's exactly what Wingard was like last year when they reviewed his season as a forward and as a midfielder.

3. Cripps says it's best if you look elsewhere - which is exactly what we told Wingard.

So basically, it's the Wingard situation all over again, except without the laziness/talent factor added to it, because Howard is half the player Wingard could be.

And I think you're wrong. Stalemate.
I know he is wrong ;)

You are getting close, and both boys acting surprised when the club doesnt blink!

Smart has never been St Kilda's strong suit.

They will have been into Ben before he was drafted. It's all a guess but I would be surprised to see them part with next year's first round.

They're in enough of a bind this year by future trading.
I remember how they got Richardson from us. Poor form on their part.

I was a nominal Saints supporter in my younger days. It's a life of disappointment.

Is it really much different to being a Port supporter for the past decade...?

Unless you have lived it you have no idea.

“PORT Adelaide has told Dougal Howard be ready to report to Alberton for pre-season, despite the key swingman telling the club he would like to join St Kilda if a trade can be brokered.”
—————
“Dougal is aware that he is a highly valued, required player at Port Adelaide,” Davies said.

“Given he is contracted to the end of 2022, the club will only entertain a trade with St Kilda if it is in our best interests to do so.

Pay us what we are happy with or you’re going nowhere.
Regardless of who really initiated this Howard saga, there's no way St Kilda will offer us anything that's "in our best interests" to accept. Likely to be pick 18 at best or a 2nd rounder, which is highly unlikely to make us any better in a mediocre lottery of skinny kids, I'd prefer the ready-to-go versatile tall we already have any day. However, I fully expect us accept such a dismal deal and try to make it sound like a win, because that seems to be the calibre of club we are these days.

I would be very surprised if any player had such detailed KPI’s. Doubt it goes much beyond games played and best and fairest placing for the top few.

Bradley Hill has nominated St Kilda as his preferred home of choice, but another Victorian club has emerged as a potential suitor.
According to Perth Now journalist Braden Quartermaine, Geelong has moved into the mix to snare Hill, with the Dockers showing interest in Cats midfielder Sam Menegola.

With the Saints and Dockers at an impasse over the Hill trade, Geelong may be able to swoop in and land the talented wingman.

St Kilda have really ****ed it if they miss out on Hill. They’ll be desperate to land Howard. 12 + 18 for Howard and 29. They can have Ryder too.

3 first round picks would allow us to double down on talls at the pointy end of the draft. Best available at 10 (Stephens, Kemp, Gould), McAsey at 12 and Worrell/Jackson at 18.

Yeah if Howard does go, I want the chance to draft 3 first rounders plus Mead.

We're supposed to be trading with Sydney, maybe not in a 4 club mega trade.

Would we trade two first rounders for 5? Then they hand over our first rounders for Daniher.

It seems like there is a pretty clear trend happening this draft period. Teams are really playing hard ball, more so than I have ever seen before. Surely this is because of how poorly everyone is rating this draft? Some of these proposed trades would have already been made if they were done last year. 5 and 9 in last years draft is insane for Daniher.

Collingwood have placed contracted defender James Aish on the trade table as the Magpies look to manage their tight salary cap to clear space ahead of a potentially clutch year of re-signings.

Industry sources have told The Age that courageous backman Aish has been encouraged to find a third AFL club, with the Pies willing to let the former No.7 draft pick go this week despite him being contracted for another 12 months.
