Autopsy Umpiring 😳 (autopsy vs Lions)

I made a comment to one of my kids Sat night that Christensen looks like an Oompa Loompa.

That hair and the overdone solarium tan just looks ridiculous.

And then he tries to make himself look tough with tatts. WTF are these guys on?
He gives me the shits as well, but I am not sure about your "overdone solarium tan" comment? Are you serious?

We were reamed by the umpires. But I can't subscribe to the theory that it's a conspiracy or some kind of AFL profit maximisation or game growing hidden agenda at play.
It's just good old fashioned garden variety weakness and incompetence.
The issue that nobody seems to want to discuss with AFL umpiring is the physical demands of the job. Because of the necessity to be able to run 20ks a game we simply don't have the best decision makers umpiring the game. We have the best endurance runners.
If you look at the referees and umpires of every other major sport on the planet they are usually older, more mature, sometimes even portly individuals who have vast experience and know how to gain the respect of players. There's a very good reason test cricket isn't umpired by 30 somethings who weren't quite good enough to make the grade as players.
But AFL is different. We have to have runners. And this counts out the most experienced or best decision makers.
We get the weedy insecure nuffies and loners who nobody really liked at school. And they cop so much abuse that they end up just being desperate for affirmation and attention. If you think home crowds and crowd noise don't influence AFL umpiring then you really haven't been paying attention.
If the AFL seriously wants to improve umpiring standards they need to stop worrying about having their secret police weed out abuse in the crowd and change the whole culture of the job. Have 6 field umpires each patrolling their own zone if that's what it takes. Just reduce the physical demands of the job.
We can all make correct decisions sitting on the couch in front of the tele. But try running 20ks, and then making that split second decision with 30 thousand people screaming at you and bogans threatening to meet you in the carpark after the game. Of course they are going to make bad decisions. And they'll cost clubs games.

Do you personally know any of the umps?

The admittance of the error in the last minute was a lot easier to explain, than the systematic reaming that occurred in the 3rd quarter.

Since when have we seen the AFL not try to justifie that free kick? Because they could have quite easily argued that there was some kind of push / block, even though it would have been total rubbish.

Admit to the one error to cover up the farce that was the third quarter. It’s a lot easier to focus on one thing, than explaining changed decisions, marks not being paid, mystical reversals, holding that didn’t exist and so on and so on.

Didn't the AFL after a Subiaco game against the Eagles say that 4 of the 6 ruck free kicks given against Hamish McIntosh were wrong?

It was probably one of the best tactical moves by Dean Cox inviting said umpire to his wedding a few months before the game. And in other news, the same umpire will probably be picked against us this weekend.

That is a good point , I have not actually considered that. I have really good eye site and I am always calling out the frees and not frees from the comfort of my seat at Ethiad. Complaining to the wife if I can see it from here, how can they not when they are 20 meters away.

I know a few ex AFL umpires. None of the present crop.
I know lots of top level umpires from other sports however, and as a general rule they come from a completely different age and experience demographic to the afl chaps and lady.
Not disagreeing with the age demographic and your point in the fitness required is valid. But your slur on the personalities and characters of the umps is very childish. Makes you sound more insecure than anyone else.

Is not... Would it have been less of a slur if I'd just called them corrupt cheats? Or bald headed flogs?

Under Scott, second quarters were often the problem for some reason.
Last couple of weeks, our third quarters were clearly our worst in games that could have been won. Could be a coincidence, but it may be something we have to look at, in terms of what the half time routine is.

Our second quarters really not much better tbh. Past 2 weeks have been almost identical, get off to great start moving the ball well. 2nd and 3rd quarters get dominated but hang tough. Start playing again in the 4th, 1 pt up in dying minutes or seconds only to lose.

Umpires are infallible. Got it loud and clear KT.

FWIW, and not sure if it’s already been discussed in this thread yet, but the free kick to Brown is a free 100 times out of 100.

Any time a ruckman puts a straight arm out to the other ruck like O did, it’s a free kick.

Seeing people go “it was an even up for the Brown free” makes the bloom boil even more.

100% correct. This used to be OK back in the day, which again shows that Luke Darcy should only be allowed to commentate the EJ Whitten Legends match.
Under current rules, the free kick to Brown is a free every day of the week.

Yes I think the looks on the players faces said it all. To me they had a look that said "we were reamed here". In most games the boys walk off with a look of disappointment. Instead on Saturday night there was a real anger to how they looked straight after the game.

I do not subscribe to the view that the AFL "instructs" the umpires as to what result they want. If they did, it only needs one person on the inside to get their noses out of joint and "blow the whistle" on such an approach. Then all hell would break loose.

Which is an interesting description of such an action when we are talking about umpires.

I think the real problem is that many of the umpires are simply not up to the standard required to be a "whistleblower". Leigh Fisher in my opinion sits clearly in that category.

This is a serious issue for the game and it needs to be addressed. I don't know how though.

I can't be bothered getting all "up and about" on this occasion, because frankly we were highly unlikely to make the 8 after the loss against *essendon and even if we did I doubt if we would advance too far. Instead now as things stand and as they are likely to pan out, we should get both a good draft pick and a better draw next year.

So I'll just park my angry meter at "volcano not far off eruption" levels rather than ready to blow. Make of that what you will.

Rupert Murdoch does not ring every editor every day and tell them what "the line" is.

He just employs people who know instinctively what the line is because it is usually pretty obvious.

Same with umpires, I mean Leigh/Sam Fisher would be probably be hanging round the Mentone RSL scabbing beers off people and eating the chips left on plates before they get cleared up if the AFL had taken him in.

He knows EXACTLY what his employers want in a game.

Are you angling for a job as a main board mod?
