  • salary cap space
  • not being able to afford the next recruit that comes along that may suit our needs more
  • may mean we lose existing players to fit him in
  • bad press
  • may end up having a negative affect on thr clubs environment

You can argue that the risk is worth the reward if you like, but to suggest there is zero risk is wrong unfortunately. There's always a risk when recruiting a player.

He’s not elite but he’s Gresham level and they never go astray. I reckon we have a 2 to 4 year window before we need to start rebuilding again. Miss it and we are building around peak King who will spend the best part of his career at the bottom of the ladder and potentially want out. We need to go now. Waiting for perfect recruiting to fall in our lap netted us Hanners and Hill and not much else.

2022 Avg:
26.9 disposals
4.8 tackles
4.2 clearances

2021 Avg:
26.5 disposals
5.3 tackles
4.3 clearances

2020 Avg:
19.3 disposals
4.1 tackles
4.0 clearances

2019 Avg:
27.7 disposals
6.3 tackles
5.3 clearances

And only 24yrs old, and at 188cm 89kg adds some serious grunt.

Numbers stack up very evenly with our own Man of Steele, albeit with lesser DE% (71.9 to 66.5).

His kicking is the only knock for mine. Just don’t know what the cost would be, he’s worth a pick around 8 to 12 IMO but you don’t pay their value. Will cost 2 x firsts with a second back.

Steele got hurt in the Geelong game (which we won).

We then beat Adelaide who for their many issues actually have a pretty decent midfield.

Flogged North in a game that proved nothing either way

Lost to Brisbane in a pretty tight game where we ran out of legs

And lost to Essendon (who also dont have a terrible midfield) in a game where we flat out didnt show up (and still managed to halve the clearance count).

We were s**t on Friday across the park but i dont think it was just midfield, in fact our pressure coming off our own forward line was the much much bigger issue on Friday than our midfield.
We've lost the midfield battle in the 4 games Steele has missed. And that is with Crouch, Ross and Gresh being pretty good over that period.

That sends the alarm bells off for me.

Nah real mids get 50+ every game

And he actually doesn’t play full time as a mid as he has to go forward to fit all their mids in. You imagine his numbers would jump exponentially as he moves full time on ball. Half of his kicks are turnovers though.

Agreed.

No issue whatsoever on talent and whether he fits a need.

Issue is DE and, to a greater extent, cost.

His kicking is why I havent been fully into him but after seeing how vulnerable we have been without Steele, it's something I could overlook.

Do they still need come cap relief? Might make them a bit more open to letting him go, especially if it helped them keep a Bruhn.

I think a lot is our inability to win the ruck. Both ours are off the boil at the same time as well as Steele out. We really only need to replace one with a top end mid more than start again. Hopefully we start to get more out of Bytel windy and Owens next year too.

To me in an ideal upgrade scenario, DeGoey has high impact and plays forward with bursts in the mids. Ruck replacement for Paddy and possibly an update on Howard. Small forwards upgraded and possibly an Amon type to push DMac and Wood out to depth.

We can’t do all of that but if we get a few pieces knocked over and hope some come on internally we should get better.

I'm going on a mission this weekend to find young people partying ay night clubs and I'm going to take video of acts that aren't breaking any laws and in particular film people who should maintain a higher standard (whatever that means but I'll make something up), I'll then call myself Gerard Whatley and I'll go on the radio in the morining and start a lynching based on a self righteous moralistic crusade that is commercially viable, I'll then be whipping the audience up and encouraging them to call up on the radio and lay into my target species, ALL DAY, then I'll supercharge the lynching on the TV later that day and hopefully by the time I've finished my days work I'll leave the halls of my office which are lined with photos of Long legged blondes who my employer makes considerable money from for their sexy appearance. I'll then go home sleep easily after absolutely slamming another human being as this countries number one Authorised and sanctioned Bully.
You’ll be on the sex offenders register or get a stalking charge unless you’re media.

Brayshaw is a gun but it's been a while since he has played as an inside mid. In that scenario, I'd rather take the gamble that Taranto continues his trajectory of being a gun mid at the cost of draft picks.

Go all out for the player who best has what we are desperate for over getting the FA who doesn't completely address our needs.
Free agency means that he comes without a trade cost. He can play in multiple roles which I’d say makes him more attractive. I vaguely remember he played a game in the guts this year and looked good.

Not really sure we did lose the midfield battle in any of those games except Brisbane but fair enough.

Their SC is as bad as Collingwood's a few years back. Will be a bit cheaper on the open market than usual. If we get him to nom us, I don't know about two FRDP's. Reckon a deal can be done.

Amon won't come cheap and there are quite a few clubs looking at him.

If we managed to land Taranto relatively cheaply and still had the $$ for DeGoey, it would lessen the worry of DeGoey for me.

On paper landing those two would be enormous to our starting 22.

I'm of the mind that no matter who it is we shouldn't be trading out both FRDPs. For that reason the free agents are obviously desirable but if Taranto can be got for 1x FRDP plus extras then he goes to the top of my list. If that were the case I'd still go hard at Gus and Amon knowing it will cost a couple of our senior blokes their spot, but who cares at that point. We know there's a few guys that are on overs and OOC so I think we could afford it if we make the hard choices.

Where’s the Flamingo when you need him?

As if Ratten hasn't been part of the conversations re who they should look at to recruit.

For the record, that's not what I said. Being involved in the discussions around a decision and being the person responsible for the decision are not the same thing. My other point remains - we don't know anything more after today's presser.
