Let's hope we can LeBron NIC Nat so he can play till 37 and more. Surely we need to have a chat with NBA on how they do it

Anabolic chicken.

Need to teach nicnat not to be too hard on opposition players because umpires will give away free kicks because they are afraid nicnat might hurt someone

If the tigers do that to us that’s okay

Are we the only club this year to give away a free kick from the bench?? Bad form guys next they will be pinging the fans in the crowd for cheering for the team

1 free kick for the first 24 minutes of the game not good enough lads need to learn to dive like the Richmond lads

Expect much more from gaff and duggan.

Time for an extended WAFL spell for both.
Gaff’s 250th shortly. Very interested in what his career looks like going forward. An undeniable superstar at his prime, exactly as advertised on draft day and a huge part of our best periods of footy.

Now I can’t work out if I think he’d look much better on a good side, or if he’s simply cooked and there’s no future for him, even somewhere else. In space his kicking is still lethal, but he gets within 2m of the contest and he’s resorted to the blind hook around the corner more than ever. Was never quick but was always unstoppable covering the track. Now he just looks like he’s running in mud.

People say “oh trade him” but I wonder if there’s a market for him at all? If we could pay some of his salary and get a pick in the 25-35 range I would laugh all the way to the bank at the moment.

Should be fine based on that - jumped to try and smother, couldn't change direction mid-air.
Agreed but it’s so bizarre that you never know what they’ll come up with.

Elected to leave your feet and elected to bump to do some heavy lifting this week.

He was very fumbly and his first instinct was to handball backwards rather than continue forward, even if we had all the momentum from a centre clearance. That said, he bobbed up with a set shot goal from a blatant tripping free kick and generally was in the right spot.

Impossibly harsh to say after one game but let’s say I’d love for him to be cleaner in getting possession and we’ll go from there.
I think Trew in his first game was much better than you are making out.

He was very quiet in the first half although he did at least one quick creative handball and did a few tackles and one percenters. Seemed a bit overwhelmed by the pace and hardness of the level.

In the third quarter he was really good being an important part of a center square set up that was smashing Richmond. A number of creative handballs, side steps and runs with the ball. Showed he is a natural footballer (more so than West and Petch). Set up at least one goal as well as kicking one himself from a crude kicking trip from Soldo.

Didn’t notice him so much in the last, maybe he was gassed. In sum, I would say a promising debut, better than any other midfielders debuted over the last few years. Definitely worth persevering with if he can get his body right.

  • Nic Nat
  • Kelly
  • Cripps
  • Trew was good in the second half, played better than I expected.
  • 69 point better team than last time we played them.

  • Turnovers
  • Dugg had a shocker

An assload of Peds.

Regular Season Sport GIF by NBA

Seriously though.

Peds.

Two or three times we should have rushed the behind and reset but went to the pocket with handballs and then a blind kick to the 50 where they marked and converted.

This is both a positive and negative in the sense it partly cost us the game but that it's an easy fix that with time and some cooler heads we should erase.

That or we drop Duggen and Gaff

Likes: I liked a lot of stuff today, players back, generally positive intent of movement.

Dislikes: Umps made some baffling Home calls
Duggan had at times been touted as a future captain, but seriously if he isn't elite now at 25 he will never be, prefer the thought of Yeo and Shuey off half backs and let young bulls tear through the centre.
Gaff looks lost

Same can be said for most of our players. As good as they were, the game has passed them by. They were good when our old team style gameplan was relevant but theyre being exposed now that 1 on 1 contests and breakneck transition speed is the current fad. Possibly why we were so hesitant to change the gameplan, our blokes are built for a different era and are severely limited in the modern game. JD, for example, would be the best forward in the comp with an extra 10cms. It happens, players go out of fashion eventually. Dominant big men used to be the way to go in the NBA, now it’s all about having to cover people shooting near halfway

If Simpson is in any way even remotely serious about putting his "credits in the bank" selection policy behind him forever, Duggan cannot be selected next week

He needs a spell in the WAFL

Negatives -

  • Gaff poor again just too slow and has no impact. Seems to have lost his running ability. Only operates well in space which his lack of pace couldn't create any himself and his slowing down with injuries. Won't get much currency from him in a trade if keeps this up.
  • Ryan and Rioli poor kicking, failed to impact the contest and only ran one way.
  • Turnovers costing us plus goal kicking accuracy. We missed our chances while they got theirs. Not helped by poor skill errors at times.
  • Some poor decision making at times.
  • WTF Nic Nat near the end of the third term Soldo successfully baited him into giving away a free which Nic Nat fell. Instead of being 12 points down we're 18 points down.
  • Rotham a liability defensively, was poor and killed any momentum going forward. He's continuing to regress. Time he gets replaced by H.Edwards.
  • Got exposed at times for lack of pace, fast leg speed players like Rioli, Bolton and Pickett killed us on the spread. Was happening against Essendon as well.
  • Yeo injured again will be out for weeks.
  • Duggan trash again, failed to respect his opponent, didn't provide much rebound and was poor with ball in hand. Played too loose and paid for it looked much better when he was playing on a man last week.
  • Waterman although he linked up ok, he was poor defensively and too fumbly plus kills momentum with his disposal. Probably coached to guard space rather than a man but then the team looks much better when guarding a man rather than space. Just simply completely incapable of being accountable for his man defensively. Didn't provide the impact in the contest.
  • Lacking awareness in the D50 to rush it for a behind or bring it over the boundary line but instead Duggan and so kicks it to the oppo player who scores a goal from it.
  • B.Williams not up to it, he's not a natural forward, failed to take marks, failed to halve contests and is a poor kick at goal. Ryan should've taken the shot rather than giving it to Williams. He was decent in the ruck though. We really needed JK but we chose to rest him.

Meh =

= Redden solid as always without being a star. Probably leading our club BnF.
= Shuey decent without being damaging.
= West although quiet was pretty decent, was playing as a HFF so his numbers are down than normal.
= Darling worked hard and kicked a goal but it's clear he's not a number one forward and never will be as he's undersized to be one. It showed in this game when Tarrant shut him down. If JK were there he would've gotten of smashed Tarrant.

Postives +

  • Nic Nat is back and doing what he does best. Without him the team looked sh*t in the center bounce and stoppages. Single handedly the most important player in the team as we're a five goal better side with him there. Had he been fit and firing against Richmond in R7 and against the Bulldogs I can guarantee that the club will NOT lose by 100 points that's how important he is with his self clearing ability and being an extra inside mid in the ruck contests plus his accurate tap work.
  • Kelly best for us, I knew he would be back after a quiet outing which I defended him for since he was coming back from the flu. Really good in the clearance and finally kicked multiple goals. If he runs ahead of the ball more then he'll get back to Geelong form.
  • Cripps was one of our best with his work rate. Probably our best two way forward. Some of his decision making was off but he more than made up for it with his ice cold goalkicking and two way running work rate.
  • Barrass shut down Lynch's impact.
  • Bazzo continuing to learn and done some cool things. Was up against a champion forward Riewoldt and held his own against him.
  • Hurn back to form taking intercept marks down the line. Still good for one more year.
  • Smashed them in clearances thanks to Nic Nat and co.
  • Jones providing rebound we needed and took the game on at times while still being accountable for his man. Getting better at balancing rebounding and being accountable for his man.
  • Yeo was really good before his injury with his effort and class.
  • Trew looked good on debut, got overwhelmed with the pace early and adjusted. Nice he kicked a goal but needs to be clean more. If he's clean in all conditions plus stays on the park then we have a player for the future.
  • Hough showing consistency on the wing.
  • Still in contention for pick 2 in the ND.

Final thoughts.

I knew Richmond were going to beat us hence why I predicted they will beat us by 44 points in the preview now game day thread. We played well but turnovers and skill errors plus poor goal kicking costed us. Probably got lucky last week that Essendon failed to make most of their chances and we did it's what's happening now. Had Nic Nat been fit against Richmond and the Bulldogs then I can guarantee that we don't lose by 100 points as he makes a five goal better side, heck guarantee we lose to Collingwood had he not been available.

With this performance we can still scare off contending sides although Yeo out for weeks will not help.

Witherden is a problematioc but should come in. This assume JJ is free to play. Rotham is well short of a contributor as well and should not play. Problem is who else?

You do realise that it was only 20-16 right? Pretty close tally.

You do also realise that we are about -40 free kicks compared to the next worst team in the negative, right? In that we get fecking reamed every single week? Do you watch footy?

We’re obviously all biased but try to go back and watch it; watch how many times we got you holding the ball and it was called play on, watch how many times Riewoldt and Lynch get held down and get no free kick, watch how Riewoldt gets his head ripped off for no free then 20 seconds later Waterman gets it for the same thing.

Umpires on the whole had nothing to do with the result today, your midfield torched our empty midfield for the most part (Dusty injured, no Prestia or Cotchin) but we were the better side overall.

In a 3 point game like last week where we lose the frees 26-13, maybe you can call out the umpiring a bit then, but not today.

Positives
  • NicNat's rucking
  • Tim Kelly's onball work and forward movement all day was sublime
  • Cripps - immense workrate all day and some slick finishes when others around him were fluffing shots at goal. Game-high for metres gained (637m)
  • J.Jones run through the middle of the ground was outstanding and set up some of our best plays
  • We moved the ball quickly through the corridor
  • Trew showed good signs and looked comfortable in the centre bounces, including a great clearance where he took on a tackler
  • Hurn turned back the clock. Took some great intercept marks and took the game on with some decisive kicks forward (rather than backwards) which is the Hurn of old
  • Waterman 10 marks for the game, mostly across high half forward. Though sometimes stalls our momentum in the forward pushes
  • Honourable mention to Petrucelle. good workrate but let down by his goalkicking to finish with 1.2
  • Barrass dominating Lynch
  • Hough looking pretty comfortable. Knew he had a good game but surprised to see he took an equal-high 10 marks for the game
  • Didn't throw in the towel after Richmond wiped the floor in Q2
Negatives
  • Turnovers killed us, either inside D50 leading to mark+goal or in the middle of the ground leading to a goal from Tigers running it back the other way
  • Duggan - had a few clanger kicks that directly set up opposition goals
  • Ryan - his two behinds in the first half both ended up being rebounded back for Richmond goals... and could see that shot his confidence when he passed to B.Williams inside 50 instead of taking the shot himself
  • Gaff - can't think of one good play that he initiated
