List Mgmt. “It’s a form of tanking” the Richmond rebuild

Remove this Banner Ad

Isnt this literally just the Hawthorn story but 3 years later?

Wasnt everyone talking about how great Sam Mitchell was for selling older players to get some kids in. Then 1 year later, the media said the competition was compromised and it was the worst thing in the world and then this year Sam Mitchell is the tactical genius?

Click bait will always exist. Richmond could come out and say we are following Sam Mitchell's model that seemed to work rather well and Carro, Barrett and Cornes should go suck a lemon.
Media is always going to media.

I don’t think the hawks and tigers situations are overly comparable though.

Hawks weren’t never close to as bad as the tigers were this year and the players we traded were holding us back while they were your better players.

Tigers are going to be absolutely awful (worse than 2020-24 North) for the next two years minimum barring a miracle.

To be honest, the hawks had a full list for most of it and weren't about to consider their Cat B rookies for a game before they got injured.

It could be a blessing but we will shoot ourselves in the foot some how.

Not to pass judgement on the rebuild or whatever or if it's good or bad but I'm a little bit confused at how it's being defined as "speed up their rebuild".

Isn't it "slowing down" their rebuild?

Baker, Bolton, Graham etc. could have still played good football for Richmond over the next 5 years or so.

But they're sacrificing that for a draft picks, top players that if they come off, will have 15+ year careers.

If you look at their chances of winning a flag over the next 15 years, with the list management decisions, isn't sacrificing the next 5 or so years for the 10 after that pushing the chance of winning a flag well into the future, essentially extending out a rebuild?

It actually went in stages…

1. Hawks need to hit the draft properly.
2. “Their old players are worth nothing, Hawthorn are screwed”.
3. “Hawthorn have traded out old players to deliberately lose games, it’s a form of tanking”.
4.”This isn’t a 3-4 year rebuild, Sam Mitchell won’t be survive this”.
4. “Tasmania will win a flag before Hawthorn, they need assistance”

Controversial take

Tanking should be allowed

If a club really wants to put themselves through short term pain then so be it

But to this point we need to get to the stage where all clubs only play each other once so no one gets to benefit twice from it

In a game where revenue streams are coming so thick and fast from gambling companies you can’t actively condone allowing teams to deliberately lose.

You have to have an onus on them to try to win even if it’s not their sole short term focus.

Yep, my concern is the lack of strong leaders on and off the track.

With Cotchin, Riewoldt and Grimes gone it leaves a massive void.

Graham is one that sets standard and is a strong voice internally and will hurt.

Baker, Rioli and Bolton will all hurt on the field, but none are strong drivers of culture and leadership within the club.

Will need to bring some retreads in to help with this is think.

Wasn't Baker a co-vice captain - by definition one of the four best on-field leaders at the club? Feels like only about 18 months ago that people considered him the most logical pick as the next club captain.

Richmond are following in the footsteps of North Melbourne having cut too hard, and have the potential to be historically bad in 2025.

While most think the Pick 3 trade was bad, at least West Coast is trying to become competitive by signing experienced players.

Replace "Hawthorn" with Richmond and "Old Players" with Taranto and it is basically just a morning SEN show with Kane Cornes.

I feel that the AFL clubs and need to fight back against editorialist. Like I hate Kane Cornes so much, that I would tell all Richmond staff that we are not talking to channel 9 or SEN.

We are not really cutting deep. We wanted these players and had contracts or competitive offers in front of them. We are not pushing players out like North through conscious decisions.

We could have issues in the back end that is creating the environments that they want to leave but we are not pushing Boomer out the door.

West Coast are trying to top up and not rebuild.

They will be in a far worse position in 2026. Especially if Reid decides to leave.

Tigers have at least accepted what is going on. They will suck next year but would assume the growth begins in 2026. Eagles will possibly only just be starting their rebuild in 2026.

On Lynch specifically, while he's had a fantastic career, not sure if someone can help me out and explain why he's worth more than the bag of chips North will end up coughing up for Luke Parker?

It’s probably just me, but it’s quite amazing watching media types spur on Richmond to trade out as many senior players as possible to grab a bunch of kids after finishing last in 2024 with just 2 wins, considering that when Hawthorn traded out just the 2 senior players tanking allegations were leveled at the club for a good 8 months after trade week.

Richmond are quite likely looking at being as uncompetitive a team as we’ve seen in the last 15 years with the amount of experience headed out the door, and will be clear favourites for the 2025 wooden spoon.

After how many 15 goal beltings will the media flip on Richmond, compare their formline to Fitzroy’s last few years of heavy defeats and start using the “it’s a form of tanking” lines?

No one should give a **** what the AFL media writes. They are not serious journalists, but merely clickbait peddlers. I'll be enjoying our preparations for our next dynasty and the AFL media can eat shit and die.

I am dumber for reading this. It's the system. It's nothing to do with commentators. And if you mean guys like Cornes wanting Baker to walk to the PSD for nothing, then yeah, they really got the pom poms out for us.

I don’t think you needed to read it to be dumber, as it’s clear that just like a few others in this thread you’ve failed to comprehend what you’ve read.

Nah, I comprehended it just fine. It's just a really poor thought out take.
