I would say this pick swap was agreed to in principle as part of the Austin swap, but we needed to see whether we'd be able to get a trade done with Richmond or Gold Coast first, to see exactly which picks we'd have to give to Port.

Austin seemed very cheap initially. Now it looks like we paid a more fair price for him. No biggie.

At least it means he probably pretty decent and not just there for back-up only long term.
Yeah I think you're on the ball there. Initially trade was Pick 50's for Austin now it looks around mid 30's based on mid table finishes.

Started with Fyfe, Dusty and Kelly signed ended with Austin Powers and selling all our future picks. Top trade period. Lucky we got that carlton legend who is our elite talent scout. I'd say St Kilda and North are battling it out for the most embarrassing trade period of 2017. Both promised the world and came home with **** all. We didn't even get Fatlop....Fatlop for **** sake.
On the money

Gresham was chased by GWS is one we know of. Billings and Ross have been chased in the past.

All are under contract as well.

We should see if we can trade back into the second round next year. Would Billings and Gresh be enough? Port might take them, they ended up with a good pick next year.

I reckon there is a good chance that with injury we could finish bottom 4 next year. It should be a handy pick for Port who should go deep into finals.

Makes heaps of sense, apparently the top end of this draft had 4 good players then average players to around 20 to 25 and then list cloggers. Next year deep and chock full of top end talent. We went all in to get some turds in the 30s and 40s this year when next year is supposedly going to have picks in the 20s that are better than this years first rounders. I admire your optimism but we just shat the bed and rolled in it.

Ameet must have gone admiring his new found fame and tried to perform some miracles, unfortunately this trade period was the equivalent of starting with loaves of bread then dropping them in water to turn them into fish but ending up with a bucket of bread slurry.
Bit of supposition in there gringo.

Really only matters next year if we dont have a 2nd or 3rd.

As the way things stand we may pick a gem in this years draft @ 34 and Port pick up a spud ne t year.

Or vica versa. Wouldnt be too upset. Still the swap was mystifying.

Who gets the #12 now?

Do we retire it for a year or two until we land an "its Happening gif" type trade or player?

I love how some people were worshipping Ameet like some sort of god around here and he could do no wrong. What this shows me is that last year the Hawks came to us with that trade proposal and blind Freddy would have seen how good it was. Some people on here hailing Ameet as the best thing since slice bread hopefully had a bit of a reality check.

So in your eyes do you see that as a win?

Personally we should have offered up pick 45 for him and left next years picks alone (stronger draft is the word).

I'm disappointed simply being that teams around us have strengthen their team dramatically (Port,Ess, Melb, even dogs with Schache) while we done nothing to improve. Yes we will be improve naturally due to a young squad, but so will every other team around us.
Na, I see it as ****ing terrible.

But the crew obviously have something up their sleeve for draft night, or at least I hope they do

Bains went to the Hawks

i think one of the key strategies we are using is to trade out future picks beyond the first round, which allows us to bring them forward a year, which means we get a head start on the player development. essentially you're fast tracking their development by 12 months

so when you're working to a 2020 list goal, you're bringing it forward a year

when you couple that with using those picks on ready made talent, you're accelerating it further

like i said i wouldnt worry about trading out next years 2nd, there will always be clubs available in next years trade period that will be prepared to trade out a 2nd

I'm sure he did

It is well documented, sorry if it doesn't fit your narrative.

The Carlisle deal was good. netted us Gresham as well

Last year was a good deal. Netted us two free players and a top ten 1st rounder three places better.

Todays deal of Logan or Austin or whatever his name is and the draft pick swaps are in that league. Ordinary but not the end of the world.

We aren't in GC territory swapping 2 for Weller or 12 for Cameron by Brisbane, or two firsts for a 29 year old like Adelaide.

The trade period was not good for us this year, but it does not detract from previous years.

I'd hope so, but having a pick that late is more luck that another club doesn't pick him than anything in today's day and age of scouting etc.

Have to agree super draft or not second rounders seem to be hit or miss and consistent over the years, might as well trade forward for the extra development. If you trust trout to get the second right next year (using it for a trade is different) you'd trust him yo get it right now. Yes having it available to trade is different but really using a 2018 or 2019 second for a trade isn't a huge difference.

With only a 1st, 4th & 5th round next year I am 100% convinced we have at least 1 if not 2 UFA's lined up for next year.
Interesting given the way next years draft has been talked about.

We must have a player in mind with the late 2nd rounder we picked up for this year.
Edit. Two to be de-listed yet. Forgot 2firstnames Logan

Frustratingly conservative trade period. I really think we should have made big offers to any free agent who would improve our team - that means Rockliff, Trengove and Motlop. Then we should have traded aggressively for any other players on the market who would improve our team - Smith, Lever, Saad, Watts. Then we should have made a play for any young players who would come cheaply with the potential to improve our team - Schache, Impey, Balic.

You can pretty much guarantee that Wright, Minchington, Pierce, Holmes and (sadly) Armitage are not going to be a part of our next successful team yet most (if not all) of them will be taking up list spots next year. We also find ourselves with far too many GOP/unproven half backs in Webster, Newnes, Savage, McKenzie, White and Rice - surely we don't need all of them on the list.

I guess we're backing in natural improvement of our younger players to take us forward. Unfortunately several of our rivals have added several ready made players to their starting 18 to complement the natural improvement of their young players. I don't mind that we held onto picks 7 and 8 but we could have done a lot more with other picks and players. I'm guessing we'll have another 7th-10th finish in 2018 and then get desperate and throw $1.3m per year at Sloane or Gaff as a FA.

No conservative isn't trading out two future picks to get a ride done where there is no obvious benefit to us. We might be targeting a specific player others think is spud but with late picks everyone else will have a go at them too. I think we just ****ed up, instead of condensing our talent which we were promised as minimum benefit we have traded out of where the better talent comes from in the draft.
