Stop looking at the individual trades and look at the whole picture.

This is spot on.

At the end of this trade period we need to view the trades as an entire package, rather than pick for pick.

Let’s also remember the intangibles, 5 players requested to come to us. No matter their reason for doing it, they requested US. Players that will improve us on every line. That’s certainly unprecedented in our history*.

That shows they believe in the direction we are heading and the bonus of the positive publicity that comes with this is something that cannot be underestimated. Together with the young talent we already have we’re building momentum for a sustained era of finals. What we had quite clearly wasn’t working, so this is the change we needed to have.

We are showing a more ruthless edge, and there will be “casualties” along the way, which is hard as we all have players we have a soft spot for, but at the end of the day we want success, and every success requires sacrifice.

I want a flag.

*Apparently not...2020, but close enough ☺️

We have been very lucky with player retention and loyalty for a long, long time. Not since pretty much Heath Black have we traded someone who doesn't want to be there...

All of a sudden Stuv wants out AND we are forcing Acres and most likely Bruce out too? Imo setting a a dangerous precedence trading players who want to play for us and have been the utmost loyal to us.
We have been very lucky and imo that is down to one major factor.. how much we are paying them to play football. Latest examples are Newnes and Acres who as reported have both been on 500(Acres)-600K(Newnes) a year playing for us. Due to not having any stars and needing to meet minimum requirements, we have essentially paid our average players double than what they are worth.

I get the fears that Acres is going to go to Freo and be a star, but we haven't let anyone go recently that has gone on to become something more than they were with us.

Hickey is still an okay ruckman. Has some good games. Has a lot of average games. Has poor games. Just like he was for us.
Stanley still highly talent that isnt being fulfilled.
Freeman played VFL, despite many people suggesting he will be picked up and prove us wrong, and still had hamstring issues.
Weller not any better at Richmond.
Minchington still injured at Hawthorn despite calls they would make him a star.
Goddard still slow and very far down the pecking order at Carlton.

Bruce will go to the Dogs and have some great games, have some good games and other games where he cant mark anything and his kicking is terrible. Just like he would if he was playing for us. Acres the exact same
i would be more worried that Acres went to WCE and became a star ... the WCE have a long and impressive list of players from other clubs that they have turned into star players ... Freo in their entire history have improved Brad Hill - and he wants out .... i cant see Freo developing Acres better than we have tried

Seriously Blake would fetch a 3rd, maybe a very late 2nd at most and I feel like that wasn’t even debated before yesterday. I’ve liked the bloke but unfortunately I think it’s for the best. Pick 10, a future 2nd and Acres sounds about right for me. And is still a lot less than what Bell initially wanted, I doubt we’ll miss Acres come round 1. We’ll likely get a future 3rd or a couple of 4ths back on top I’d imagine.

Throwing in the Stuv pick makes it slight overs but given how unders that pick is for Stuv anyway I have little problem seeing it gone.
I can’t believe people are getting caught up in ‘what bell initially wanted’ as if that’s a good starting point.

If Hill costs a 1st, 2nd & 3rd round pick he’ll want to actually make his first squad of 40 AA next year plus more.

Part of why Acres has no perceived value is that Fremantle didn’t make a song and dance about him for 6 months... it’s great that we are getting players nominating us, but i hope we get smarter in future and keep our cards to our chest.

We’re so excited by anyone decent wanting to come that we’re waving ‘come ream us’ flags at the trade table, at the same time telling our current best 22 players that they won’t get a contract beyond next year which tanks any value they may have had.

That's what we told him when he was first drafted, 'we're gonna train you up blake, give you the best coaching in the biz, make you the player you want to become... so one day we can trade you for overs to freo for brad hill. Now, time to run your 3k.'

Blake should have suspected the club was being misleading sooner then if we promised the best coaching in the biz then gave him 6 years with richo

But wasn’t Blacres was our only really big bodied mid?

Yep, there's no like for like replacement at present.

We've got Coff listed at 191cm and 82kg (so very similar to Blake) who presumably we will look to move to the midfield at some point. Bytel is listed at 188cm and 78kg so longer term he could be that player for us with a few preseasons (and he's 19 1/2 so it's quite conceivable he could grow another cm or two.

Can you be a dfa if you have a contract? I think Carlton might have to trade for him....

Or I guess they can just get him in the PSD
He doesn’t have a contract. He hasn’t signed the one we have offered to him.
If he doesn’t sign it then he delists himself. He then sits in limbo waiting for a club to offer him one. He risks not getting one at all

We need change and at least now we are getting it.

2000:

Stevie Lawrence
Matty Capuano
Aaron Hamill
Craig Callaghan
Fraser Gehrig

?

I’m hoping we are trying to get the Jones and Hill deals done without needing the Bruce deal to go through.

We can then put pressure on the dogs to stump up an overs trade from Bruce.

Something like -
Acres and 10 for Hill
Future 2nd for Jones
Bruce for 13 and later picks.

Maybe looked at 13 and 2020 1st for a Crouch and a second back.

I don't think he can count as a DFA unless we withdraw the contract. If it's still on the table and he delists himself, he has to go into the draft.
