sorry just been catching up on this thread...

I've read a lot about the mistake of taking Paddy at number 1 in the 2014 draft so decided to refresh my memory....

2014 AFL draft and this is where the top 10 sits now

1. Saints. Patrick McCartin (head case issues - concussion)

2 Demons. Christian Petracca (head case issues - FIGJAM without the G bit to get him the respect of the comp)

3 Demons. Angus Brayshaw (head case issues - concussion)

4. Giants. Jarrod Pickett (injury prone - now gone from Carlton.)

5. Magpies. Jordan De Goey (head case - at that time I believe that is the agreed consensus though gun now)

6. Giants. Caleb Marchbank (key defender - not likely to get the membership excited and not yet established as a star of the comp)

7. Giants. Paul Ahern (done well to battle his way after 2 reco's and looks a pretty reasonable afl player)

8. Suns. Peter Wright (I took this from the afl season review of the sun's...
Disappointment

Peter Wright: After Lynch departed it was hoped Wright could grab the mantle as the Suns' go-to man, but 'Two Metre Peter' just couldn't find the consistency and was banished to the NEAFL late in the season.)

9 Magpies. Darcy Moore ( not available as Father son pick)

10 Cats. Nakia Cockatoo. delisted. no comment

That was the "reasonable" choices for the number 1 draft pick. Bag the previous recruiting team for their fails but people should probably leave taking Paddy at number 1 off their list of gripes

Nakia Cockatoo was delisted? When did that happen? I thought he was alright. Not #1 mind you. We probably should have just split our pick, but that's just Harry Hindsight talking.

split picks only came into being the last couple of years. before that we were not allowed to.

Pick swaps were definitely on the cards in 2014. Rumours were 1 and 21 for 4 and 7. Might have gone alright in hindsight. Although if we grabbed pickett and ahern I have a feeling this place would have been torn down.

Not much durability in that lot !

If we took that deal and the top 3 went Patreacca, Baryshaw and McCartin then we would have taken Laverde at 4 and one of Lever or Goddard at 7.

There was a poster here at the time who was at the draft and managed to take a photo of our list of targets.

According to SEN this morning.

Saints and Dees sharing the cost of bringing Harley Bennell over to Melbourne as both are giving him medicals!

What a disastrous year this was

It's pretty easy in the end.

If we have a rubbish list, then we track towards the minimum but over pay some individuals.

If we have a good list, then we track towards maximum but under pay some individuals who take the cut for success.

Still waiting for the good list we are...
Yes, but that’s using your brain and logic.
As opposed to either media commentary (see Caro) or the vast proportion of uninformed guesses here.

2 games between 80/81 for two goals, seems a wise move as the big fella went on to become a renowned Australian architect.

That's before my time but I know him as an architect. That's up there with Mordy Blomberg for good post footy careers.

Absolutely agree with you that no one on BF has any idea about our SC position.
Anyone who professes to know is talking through their backside.
That one piece of information is fiercely guarded.
For two reasons:
1. It has direct implications to reported club Profit.
2. It is a key competitive advantage measurement in this era of bidding for players.

However: don’t think because the information is fiercely guarded it cannot be used for disinformation purposes.
For example: Caro was rabbiting on about our SC being under pressure a few months ago. Then she shut up. Perhaps someone pointed out the low likelihood her statement was correct. More likely she realised someone may have been feeding her a line for their own nefarious purposes.

The closest you will find to a true statement about our SC is in the notes to the Financial Statements.
But that disclosure is designed more for obfuscation than transparency.

Thus: any statement about our SC on BF is, at best, a guess.
Just for those struggling like an old Master, I had to look this one up
  1. obfuscation(Noun)
The act or process of obfuscating, or obscuring the perception of something; the concept of concealing the meaning of a communication by making it more confusing and harder to interpret.
  2. obfuscation(Noun)
Confusion, bewilderment, or a baffled state resulting from something obfuscated, or made more opaque and muddled with the intent to obscure information.
  3. obfuscation(Noun)
A single instance of intentionally obscuring the meaning of something to make it more difficult to grasp.
During the debate, the candidate sighed at his opponent's obfuscations.
  4. obfuscation(Noun)
The option to alter computer code, preserving its behavior but concealing its structure and intent.

Not to be a pot stirrer but I find it funny that Tomlinson was a mainstay in the Giants 22 but very few wanted him at the Saints.

He's a bit too much like everything we already have though. He was their Newnes. We need a glitter tank-top and a Bedazzler, not another beige cardigan.
