He's a bit too much like everything we already have though. He was their Newnes. We need a glitter tank-top and a Bedazzler, not another beige cardigan.
The strange thing about Tomlinson as well , people where saying if we got him we would have to forfeit what we get for Newnes , well I know now we lost a lot.
Tomlinson was no superstar but he could fill any hole when needed , which Newnes couldn't.
Anyway we picked up Howard who they say has great upside.

Watson told SEN Breakfast that the Saints and Demons halved the cost to fly Bennell over from Perth.

“I believe he is going to be tested by Melbourne, but he is also going to go, I believe, to St Kilda, too,” Watson said.

“Because St Kilda are going to have a look at him as well, the two clubs are actually sharing the cost of bringing him across to Victoria.”

Bennell was delisted by Fremantle after playing just two games in four years due to persistent calf injuries.

It is a no from me to Bennell. If half of what posters here have said about his antics in WA .......we don’t need him at our club - period.

I just can’t get around the idea. Good for Harley if he eventually gets there but he’s just got St Kilda level disaster written all over him.

Everyone deserves one or two chances when they are young, but this guy has a list as long as your arm. An particularly now because we have lads like Hill & Parker we wont need a rotten egg to spoil what they will acheive.

Regardless of the fitness of Bennell, its an absolute NO from me. No player is worth that much trouble and the club that takes him on will soon discover that.

I'm disappointed the club are even looking, it's no different to the Cousins scenario.

The same Ben Cousins that played 32 games and ave 23 touches while playing for Richmond over the 2 years we narrowly missed out on back to back flags due to a lack of polish and composure in our forward half. That Ben Cousins?

If Bennell is the 45th player on the list then it's worth taking a risk. Carlisle and Hanners already have a rep and they are 2 of our most important players going in to next season.

We should back in Hill, Parker, Long and Ryder to put their arms around him and set him straight off the field.

sorry just been catching up on this thread...

I've read a lot about the mistake of taking Paddy at number 1 in the 2014 draft so decided to refresh my memory....

2014 AFL draft and this is where the top 10 sits now

1. Saints. Patrick McCartin (head case issues - concussion)

2 Demons. Christian Petracca (head case issues - FIGJAM without the G bit to get him the respect of the comp)

3 Demons. Angus Brayshaw (head case issues - concussion)

4. Giants. Jarrod Pickett (injury prone - now gone from Carlton.)

5. Magpies. Jordan De Goey (head case - at that time I believe that is the agreed consensus though gun now)

6. Giants. Caleb Marchbank (key defender - not likely to get the membership excited and not yet established as a star of the comp)

7. Giants. Paul Ahern (done well to battle his way after 2 reco's and looks a pretty reasonable afl player)

8. Suns. Peter Wright (I took this from the afl season review of the sun's...
Disappointment

Peter Wright: After Lynch departed it was hoped Wright could grab the mantle as the Suns' go-to man, but 'Two Metre Peter' just couldn't find the consistency and was banished to the NEAFL late in the season.)

9 Magpies. Darcy Moore ( not available as Father son pick)

10 Cats. Nakia Cockatoo. delisted. no comment

That was the "reasonable" choices for the number 1 draft pick. Bag the previous recruiting team for their fails but people should probably leave taking Paddy at number 1 off their list of gripes

i'd take literally every player in that 9 (removing Moore from the discussion) ahead of paddy right now. pickett excluded, due to injury.

Bennell coming to st kilda just so unbelievably wrong. i'm totally out if that occurs. just an absolute cancer of a human being.
I'll bet some had the same opinion of Marlon Pickett when he was that age.

Have some faith in the club on this one.
I'm not saying I'd want him, but it won't cost us anything.

Obviously you have a look at him to see if his body stacks up. His talent is unquestionable.

Anyone else of the opinion that Hill may have an impact on where Bennell wants to play footy (if it were to come down to his choice).

Apparently very close off field and with the number of indigenous players on our list he may feel the environment at Moorabbin is his best bet for him to succeed.

Can't be worse than Dayle Garlett was right?
Except it was the Hawks took Dayle.
If we took him....oohhhhh culcha.

I would say that given we have more indigenous players on our list , that he would tow the line , especially knowing this will be he's last chance.

I would also think that the club have asked Hill's opinion on him , and he may have encouraged the club to go after him

Disturbing footage shows brawl outside Subiaco nightclub
2:12 | 7NEWS Perth

Fremantle Dockers player Harley Bennell has stood up for bikie associate friends, telling a court this week a young father they brutally bashed in a brawl outside a Subiaco nightclub had threatened to shoot the AFL footballer.
Al Gerry Morais and Christopher Hallan Blackledge both claimed at their District Court trial they acted in a pre-emptive strike in self-defence when they attacked Jack Talauega outside Voyeur Bar after a Melbourne Cup party in 2016.
In a vicious bashing captured on CCTV, Morais and Blackledge are seen kicking and stomping on Mr Talauega, who was left with fractures to his eye-socket, cheekbone and jaw.
The pair carried out the bashing with Rebels bikies Peter Michael D’Abreu and Dylan James Adams, who admitted their role in the attack before the trial.
Adams — who killed teenager Charlotte Pemberton in 2015 when he smashed his high-powered motorcycle into a car — had been kicked out of the club for fighting.

When violence later erupted on the street, Morais and Blackledge claimed they acted to protect themselves after Mr Talauega threatened to shoot them.

Their belief Mr Talauega had a gun, the pair claimed, was backed up by a brief conversation between Morais and Bennell in the lead-up to the brawl, in which the footballer said a Maori man had threatened to shoot him.

Bennell, who said he was “very close friends” with Blackledge and knew Morais, was called as a defence witness and testified the man had confronted him about “giving him the eye”.

“(He said) I’ve got a gun and I’ll shoot you,” Bennell testified.

Bennell said he took the threat seriously, but did not tell security or police. After watching the CCTV vision, Bennell said he was “200 per cent” sure that the victim was the man who had made the threat.
Morais and Blackledge also claimed they were traumatised from the shooting death of their friend Mitchell Finnerty at a Banksia Grove house about six months earlier and were hyper-vigilant about guns.
But prosecutors argued the men were never in any danger, and were instead on the street and keen to fight.
A jury agreed and on Thursday convicted both men of doing an act which endangered the life, health or safety of Mr Talauega .
Adams and D’Abreu had already pleaded guilty to the same offence.
All four men will appear in court on Wednesday when a sentencing date will be set.
Bennell caught up in police probe after physical clash with bikie
By Sam McClure
March 20, 2019 — 5.58pm

Troubled Fremantle star Harley Bennell has been caught up in a police investigation, following a physical altercation with a bikie in the crowd at a pre-season match.
The Age understands that Bennell, when walking back to the crowd from the bathrooms in the JLT 2 clash with West Coast in Mandurah, was accosted by several men, one of whom is a member of the Coffin Cheaters motorcycle gang and is known to police.

The incident became physical and security is said to have stepped in and offered to escort Bennell to his car.
The incident is now being investigated as part of a wider probe by the Western Australia Organised Crime Squad.

The club is doing it's job by sitting down and talking to him.

Whatever comes from that is unknown, but there is nothing disappointing about looking at all possibilities to improve our list next year.

Does everyone remember what happened last time we opted to trade an indigenous speedster with great skills but a questionable background?
