Would be happy for Savage to get a shot somewhere else. Is good enough to play every week, and we have plenty of other depth options in that position.
Quite like Savage as depth, but realise with a full pre-season and some continuity Jimmy (and to a lesser extent Duncan) should be better placed to fill that role.

Good luck to him.
Rumors abound of potentially another trade period for guys left without a contract, so perhaps we could get a 10th round pick for him, but I doubt it.

That 2nd trade period will not go ahead apparently

It looks more likely he'll be let go as a Delisted Free Agent

The AFL today proposed an alternative model to the NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft for 2021 that would allow Clubs to fill vacant list spots or replace inactive players on a monthly basis.

Details of that proposal are as follows:

Between the end of the SSP and prior to Round One, undrafted and other eligible players can opt into being upgraded to an AFL list during the 2021 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

Clubs can then nominate to upgrade a previously undrafted or eligible player to their respective Rookie List at three different periods throughout the 2021 season (eg. following Round Four, Round Eight, and Round 12).

In the instance that the same player is nominated by two or more Clubs, the player will go to the team lower on the ladder under a rolling process (eg. if a Club selects a player, that Club goes to the back of the line).

The AFL informed Clubs it would discuss this model further with both AFL and State League Clubs over the next month with the view to finalising whether it is introduced in the 2021 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

Should we really be letting Sav go unless he’s offered more security and wants to go to the Giants? I see him as currently our number 1 backup if any of Coff/Long/Pato/Clark are injured. Would like to rely on Webby but realistically his body has let him down for the better part of 2 and a half years. Other than that we have McKenzie. Not ideal.

Savage, Webster, Geary, McKenzie, Connolly.

Yeah Sav is robust and reliable, but the truth is that he's not best 22, or in our plans going forward. We need his list spot and his salary for other things now.

AFL has dismissed the idea of a second trade period, as per their Instagram page.

Yes trade is off the table , but they are proposing mid season drafts.
Given that some pretty promising 18 year olds are likely to be around, we might have freed up some extra spots to make sure we had room.

In the last two off-seasons, we've seen Newnes, Acres, Bruce, Steven, Hind & possibly now Savage – all of whom (except Hind) were walk-up starts for us at some point – get let go for unders. It's crazy to look at that list and know that none of them would be in our best 22 next year. We're now a side that gets everyone who nominates us in the club as well as taking care of our own when it's time to move them on.

Sad to see Ed Phillips delisted but understandable unfortunately. Good luck to him .

The AFL are a disgrace. They should have decided on list numbers way before the trade period. Clubs have added players but still have no idea about whether they are going to have to cut players or not .
If the AFL worked out what the lists sizes were going to be before the trade period then maybe some of those guys getting delisted might have had a chance to getting picked up by another team .
So I assume those players can nominate in the draft later on but in the meantime those players are in limbo especially as most of them hardly played at all in 2020 .
Maybe the AFL should be downsizing their own structure instead of passing it all onto the clubs . No more free passes to finals and games for people who work at the AFL . They can afford to pay for themselves for games , flights and hotels etc .

Ed Phillips delisted

Unfortunately no VFL for Ed to save himself at the end of the year. Was a running joke at Sandy that he would do nothing for most of the year, then play an absolute blinder in the last week or 2 to save his skin

2017 - 13 games. Once in the best (final round) with 26 touches
2018 - 10 games. 34 touches in the second last round
2019 - 9 games. Once in the best (final round) with 28 touches

After 4 years, right call for mine. All the best Ed

He's not under contract so I think if he asks to leave we will do the right thing and let him go

I'm certain Phillips and Parker (amongst others) would have been offered to all and sundry during trade period. Most probably weren't interested in either of them, and those who were knew that getting them after their delisting was the cheapest option.

Can someone explain the maths formula that allow's every one on a list of 40+ players to be starting 22?

Your point being that someone has to fill the other spots?

Right. But pretty clear to me that Phillips is never going to make it and probably same for Parker. (Though I would have given him another year to be sure.)
