As it stands we can't really trade our future second. It will be eaten up if we manage to get the 2 NGA's.
If we traded it, our future first will turn into a future second.

Even by bringing in those couple of later picks, we would likely turn one of the 2021 first round picks into a second rounder.

I think the contigency is that we live trade the future fourth to a club who is out of the draft by round three. We trade it to them for their third and we have a live pick and they have some capital going into 2022, better than just losing a pick.

We then have some options to use on NGA's or a Libba special, the next Sharman

A big step from VFL to AFL, but when he was delisted his body seemed OK and he got a couple of senior games, and I would take a risk give him a year. A bit like Dunstan with better and sharper disposal. Any player who has strong desire to play at top level is a bonus.

Freemans quality was his explosive pace, the injury has robbed him of that. probably a very good footballer, but just not quite good enough for AFL without that pace.

Yuck. This is our last chance and the first for ages to get a high end pick and we are down grading it into the left overs bin. Great for the idiots that are all in on Ben King but it will just mean that GC ask for the two firsts for 2022 and the 2023 first as well.....and we don't even have a second in either year.

To me that's almost the worst of all worlds. If the two NGAs go inside 20 we are left with 6 picks that won't get used.....and we pay them to have Battle.

I don't think it works that way.

From memory 1st round picks aren't affected by any deficits being carried over.

Did you campaigners not listen to Aaron Hamill? Dunstan is an elite mid, we just got ****ed by the AFL.

(Disclaimer: the above is a joke, but in all seriousness sad to see Dunstan go, was good depth despite never developing on much from his first 2 seasons).

Apologies if it's already been raised but is their any links/ thoughts on us going after Sam Powell-Pepper. 23 year old fan favourite. Sometimes the fans get it right. Would look a pretty competitive midfield alongside Steele and Jones.

Trade 9 and Battle for 14 & 18 Brisbane
Trade 14 for Tom Mitchell
18 to the draft - take a slider like Knevitt/Goater/Johnson

Mitchell has 5 years of good footy left and would be a massive boost in the area we need it most. If we get the player we liked at 9 at 18 then Mitchell is practically free.

What about this:
I have come up with the following trade scenario using each club's current picks (allowing for Daicos and Darcy in the 1st round); and this year's ladder positions as the basis for draft pick points for next year.

St Kilda: Pick 11, 2022 2nd round, Battle

Brisbane: Pick 16, 2022 1st round, 2021 Picks 50 & 60
Points: StK - 1329 + 703 = 2032 + Battle. Bris - 1067 + 1161 + 273 + 146 = 2647. Diff: 2647 - 2032 = 615.
Rates Battle at about Pick 30, depending on where clubs finish. Gives us another FRP for Ben King next year and enough points for our NGAs this year; and gives Brisbane extra 2nd round points next year for Ashcroft!! There may be a bit of extra late future pick swapping, but the above is the guts of the deal.

Result for this year: Brisbane - 11, 20, 54, 76, 90 (+ Battle).
StK - 16, 50, 60, 62, 66, 67, 85. If picks 50 - 67 move up at least 5 spots that will give us 994 points (equivalent to pick 18) that will more than cover our NGAs.

Thoughts? Go easy on me people!!
So the theory being that it potentially saves our 2023 FRDP from the Bing trade?

I like the idea but l'm dubious that a late 1st would hold much sway and CG would simply ask for 3x FRDP.
Are there any similar options with clubs more likely to bomb next year? Cats, Port, Syd..

Trade 18 for Mitchell, keep 14.

The AFL only allow us to go into deficit if we have points for the deficit in next years draft. For this purpose they calculate the points as if we finish top of the ladder.

They will not allow us to write off the points needed.

So if we had no second round pick, and not enough points in the later picks next year, we either use the first round pick or they don't allow the deficit.

Worst case scenario for deficit.

Owens 20 - 912 points - 20% = 730 points.
Windhager - 878 points - 20% = 702 points.

Total points needed = 1432 points.
-------------------------------
Points we have in the tail end of the draft.
62 66 and 67. Guessinig they will come forward to 50ish. We will get around 778 points.

Deficit = 654.

AFL calculate allowable deficit as :
First round 985. Second round 502. 3rd round 220. 2x 4th round. 38.

If we traded out the second round pick, we would either be banned from matching, or we would need to downgrade our first round pick by around 400 points. Possibly turning it into a second round pick.

note that the actual points that we get for our future picks will depend where we finish next year. The points in the above scenario are those used by the AFL for calculating whether or not they will allow you to go into deficit.
-------------------------------

Probably a more likely scenario is :
Owens - Pick 24 785 points -20% = 628
Windhanger pick 32 584 points -20 % = 467
Total = 1095

Deficit around 317 points.

If we finished , hmmm 5th on the ladder next year, our second round pick would be 584 points and would turn into a late round 3.

If we traded our 2022 second now we would be close to the points with our future 3rd and 2x 4ths.

Well done saints.

this is the biggest load of 'first world problems/first round draft pick problems' crap. 'He never had a chance to cement himself'.. the hell he lead their goal kicking and is their number one forward.. he's cemented, we're just watching from the sidelines with a jackhammer is all

Well done saints.

If Ben was bothered by it, fair enough. As for the disrespect being shown to the Gold Coast - I could not give a single shit about them. They don’t deserve any respect at all, they are a rabble that has been given more gifts from the afl than any other team and still can’t get it together.

At first I hoped Ben would pick either St Kilda or Gold Coast, but the more concessions they get the more I hope he, and the other future stars, all abandon ship to any other club. Even if that means he ends up at Essendon.

Would be weird if we let Dunstan go only to get SPP
