His mistakes infuriate me because he is a very good kick and he goes for some lazy kicks across the body or off a step and they are always inside our defensive 50. It's lairy and unnecessary. They are just goal giveaways.

I believe I was the first one on this board to scan opposition lists and identify Newman as a cheap trade option several months before we got him. I do recognise errors in players I have backed in though. I recognise he is not quick, not an aerialist, doesn't play short or tall. His kicking and experience are his best traits.

At the moment, he is handy. Long term, he is a placeholder.
I see it differently. I don't think we need to look to upgrade him to get better. He is good enough to be part of our Premiership side.

He has a good balance of defence and attack.

I think his sideways kicks tend to result in opening up the field and would have a license to do it. Don't think it's lazy

Don't mind the changes but Boyd feels very unlucky.

Additionally I'm a bit nervous about having 3 small forwards who are all so young and inexperienced. Would have rather seen Motlop for Owies and reward Paddy Dow with a game rotating between mid and half forward with Matt Kennedy. Then Cripps to play forward more and rely on our talented mids to kick a few more sausages.

But what do I know. Hopefully they prove me dead wrong. Go blues!

Edit: sorry wrong thread! Thank you mods for moving.

Yeah nah, not when you are kicking across goal to a teammate inside our defensive 50 when the opposition have already spread. Dead set, when he didn't last week, there was no open side on the agenda.

Credit where it is due and criticism when it is due. Poor 1st quarter last week, good 2nd half.

GWS has swung a change ahead of Sunday’s clash against Carlton with Jesse Hogan to miss through illness.

Fellow forward Jake Riccardi has been brought in to replace Hogan. The 22-year-old is coming off an eleven-goal fortnight in the reserves, including a nine-goal outing last week.

I seem to be the only person who thinks Newman makes terrific decisions and is generally great disposal.

His mistakes don't infuriate me any more than any other player. Every player has them and he doesn't do it any more than others.

Defensively and positioning very strong.

Unheralded IMO

If by terrific decisions you are referring to his taste in fine wine, then yes sir, I completely concur. 🤣😂🤣

No, on a more serious note, I think he's generally pretty serviceable for us.
👍

Yep the guy kicked 9 last week and still couldn't make the team without an injury occurring! That's gotta be prime poaching material.
See if he can perform against AFL quality opposition this time around. That's been his issue so far, other than his first couple of games.

Also us losing our CHF and CHB, replacing them with inexperienced players, I think the odds are against us a bit.

Which would make winning up there all the more special.

Honestly, if we can get over the line against a team that has traditionally dominated us, on their home turf, in their coach's farewell game, with lots of key injuries, after winning our last 2 weeks (in previous years we get complacent) then I'm just about ready to declare that we've arrived.
