Not hard to understand why Owies gets selected each week.......

The Blues rank third for tackles inside 50 this season (11.5 per game). Owies (17) leads the way not only at Princes Park but across the league, ahead of Kysaiah Pickett (16), Stephen Coniglio (15), and Sam Switkowski (15), heading into round nine. Durdin (10) has also brought the heat.

Love his development, one of the ones we’ve got right!! Hopefully gets a couple goals tomorrow

Agree. Not sure playing 3 smalls Durdin, Owies and Motlop is the way to go.

Dow in the midfield, allowing Cripps and Kennedy longer spells up forward may have been a better option to cover Harry.
I was more thinking along the lines of a larger rotation of clearance mids who work over the oppositions setup, leaving TDK to play a little more conservatively after the tap. That way, he can play more minutes on-ball, and we don't have to worry too much about resting Dow, Cripps, or Kennedy up forward as JSOS will be there.

All three inside mids are also well trained up in how to drift into the 50 to provide an option in front of the leading forward (in the NFL, this is called an underneath or hitch route).

I reckon it is more than just Cripps. Kennedy and Hewett (fingers-crossed) are perfect for a wet stoppage game. When JSOS goes into the ruck, I reckon he will thrive too. Cerra and Walsh don't mind a contest. Don't think GWS have the same depth of players who are willing to scrap through a physical game.

Get on top of them early and they will crumble....

Motlop isn't purely a crumbing and or an inside 50 small forward. He will push up to the edge of stoppages and makes good decisions with ball in hand

Like Carroll, he will appreciate the setup in class
He's very good at playing as a midfielder and a half forward who pushes up into the midfield. Dangerous if we can get the ball out the back of the zone and into the space from what I have seen. Get him the footy goal side and let him use his pace.

There should be a lot more ball coming to ground so more supply for our small forwards.

Try and get Curnow with some space inside 50, if they put extras in front of him, and they will that means we have to find the spare man on our team. He's going to get a bit more footy coming his way, would not write him off kicking a bag.

Newman makes the odd mindless decision, but his defensive positioning is miles ahead of Boyd. Has the flexibility to play a little taller than he is, which is going to be critical when GWS try to manipulate matchups.

Boyd is a work in progress, plenty of time for him and missing this one is no slight.

Yeah, Newman's mistakes are infuriating and I keep writing him off when he does it. But you do notice his ability to hold defensive shape when our defence zones up outside our defensive 50, and use his body well to keep opponents out of the ball drop area.

He has strength and a bit of attitude.

I seem to be the only person who thinks Newman makes terrific decisions and is generally great disposal.

His mistakes don't infuriate me any more than any other player. Every player has them and he doesn't do it any more than others.

Defensively and positioning very strong.

Unheralded IMO

Even though we’ve got a bit of height crisis this week IMO its fraught overhauling game plans and players positioning i response so I think the coaches have got the selections spot on.
Losing a tall key forward like H means we will have to change our game plan in any case to some extent. It will be interesting to see how we adjust and who steps up to kick our goals.

Newman is fine, finds the footy apart from a few howlers uses it pretty well, makes good decisions and defends well. Most of our defenders are prone to two really bad kicks again, Docherty kicks it down the throat of the opposition two or three times a game. Newman is pretty underrated.

I think where a player has come from has a lot to do with it for some.

Newman has been as good as Williams this season for example. Makes less howlers and is more consistent over four quarters. I do think ZW is an overall better footballer but he has escaped a lot of the criticism that a player like Newman is getting, likely due to the investment we made in him, and his "pedigree" prior to arriving at Carlton.

Newman isn't in my best 22 all being well but every club has players like him and every club needs players like him. 5 years ago he was Mullett or O'Shea.

His mistakes infuriate me because he is a very good kick and he goes for some lazy kicks across the body or off a step and they are always inside our defensive 50. It's lairy and unnecessary. They are just goal giveaways.

I believe I was the first one on this board to scan opposition lists and identify Newman as a cheap trade option several months before we got him. I do recognise errors in players I have backed in though. I recognise he is not quick, not an aerialist, doesn't play short or tall. His kicking and experience are his best traits.

At the moment, he is handy. Long term, he is a placeholder.

Newman is a better kick than Doc, but Doc racks up 30 disposals per game so more prone to errors. Newman gets just under 20 most games and that's including taking the lion's share of kickouts which count as a free kick stat if you play on out of the goal square.

Sorry, late to the party. I see this as an emotional danger game that can be stomped on with a physical presence early. Tackle pressure across the oval to remind them there is a reason Cameron is leaving. They are rubbish; remind them of their doubts early and often. Lead this party, Crippa.

Agree. I actually thinks he hits targets others either can't or don't go for it. When he rebounds, we tend to start a good chain moving forward.
