I think the thing that gets overlooked or never dared spoken about aloud is this teams complete lack of aggression. It's pretty much a list full of prey with victimhood written all over it. Bar for Ryder, Howard, Wilkie and Battle every other player is on the prey spectrum relative to predator/enforcer. I've seen a couple try to elevate their levels but find themselves on their ass apealing to the umpire to intervene because they were treated roughly by their opponent.
This has been a club trait since the mid 90's with a host of school boy type stars who couldn't quite do it on the big stage when something extra was required.
Whether you like it or not the reallity of the great teams is that they always have a bunch of these guys who are naturals at it and create a ripple effect through the rest of the list. Unfortunately the same is true of the the opposite and has been a staple since Hamil, Lawrence, Gherig, Guerra, Baker, and Lenny were in the same team. In this team prey like Reiwoldt and Harvey could ply their skills in their fair and gentlemanly manner without it becoming contagious through the list. But I still beleive if they could have taken the same evolutionary path that Cotchin took to the predator side we would have seen a few more premierships. Just imagine Reiwoldt running through Scarlett in the 2009 GF as a square up for the throat chop I saw Scarlett lay on him earlier theat year.
Anyway with this in mind I think it is time to adjust the scales and do what Brisbane did in getting Robertson, Richmond in Caddy and Nank, Melbourne with May.
We missed a massive opportunity with Powell-Pepper last year but may still be able to get him if Port really want NWM whom by the way is on the hyper side of prey/victim.
NWM for Rozee and Pepper or NWM for Ports first and Powell-Pepper.
I think De Goey can step up in the second half of his career and be an enforcer hyper confident extrovert type that we need desparetly. Free trade.
Rhys Matheson is the perfect fit for us. A real protector of his teamates and under played at Brisbane. A character/extrovert and club man. Steele, Bytel, Windhager and Owens would all benefit from having him on the list as opposed to dealing with him in finals as an opponent.Use Hill pick 19 and get Matheson and maybe a third round pick as well back.
Cam Zuurhaar would be a dream although he does seem a bit introverted but it could be a body language issue of being 10 down at half time most weeks.
With these four guys coming in and mixed with the pre existing positive guys you might see more aggresion come out of the likes of Steele, Coffield, Clarke etc and develop in Owens and Windhager who are right on the edge of going one way or the other depending on the dynamics of the group.
