For every Dmac and Sincs there is a Billings, and Dunstan…

Players that have traits to suggest they’d be very good footballers but just don’t come on like you’d hope.

The difference between Dmac and Sincs is they’ve both got elite athletic traits and endurance. I don’t see that at all with Clark which shows why he doesn’t play midfield and is a liability on defensive transition. Much like JB and Dunstan. However, some of his skills with ball in hand can be elite. My concern is that he’ll end up being a GOP who has flashes of brilliance but never puts it together/finds a spot in the team.
They would know Clarks endurance and speed from GPS data and if he does go it could be one of the reasons they will let him go.

That’s a seperate issue.

His salary isn’t a hinderance to our cap.

His output v his salary is an issue.
Agreed

But if we ca offload a salary it's obviously going to make it a hell of a lot easier to chase a big fish or two next year.

And it's probably going to be harder to offload the older he gets

Just read this.

Apparently Hawkins most paid was 800k and he’s on 300k now. No wonder they can afford so many stars. The *ers must brainwash them into a cult.
Or have multi million dollar investments with third parties....

They take pay cuts because club benefactors make up the rest...

I don’t believe that Hawkins is only on 300k for one second. He’s one of the best key forwards in the game and they’re always paid well. That’s less than the average AFL player I mean come on. Makes a good headline but that can’t be true.

If he left. We would be paying some of the salary anyway

The return not what we are contributing is the KEY to this entire trade.

Regardless of opinions. As an outside wingman. Hill can cut sides up and be used very effectively
Please explain, and this goes to anyone who thinks Hill is going to north with Saints still paying, why we would need to pay any of Hill’s salary.

Remember that clubs are required to spend a minimum of 95% of the salary cap. The cap was $13.54mil for 2022.

North have finished 17th (only percentage above 18th), 18th and 18th the past 3 years. Have gutted their list of most of their established players. Have failed to bring in any player of note. Have a large amount of unproven youth (why would you financially reward them now). Who exactly are they paying decent money to?

You can front end all the contracts in the world, but in that case a few years later and you’ve got an even bigger problem reaching the salary cap floor.

Only 300k a year but his missus works for factorie part time on 600k a year.

Hopes for this year trade period : realistic returns
  • De goey free agent… 900 for 5 years
  • Hill … future 2nd or if North get a second round priority pick.
  • sign up Longy
  • keep Clark unless a late first rounder comes our way .
  • Trade in ruck/fwd … Mcclean , Amarty, Rata, Meek or Bryan
  • Tanner Bruhn or brayden Forini would be a good addition also

Haha I bet Geelong are loving this focus on their salary cap.
One of the best key forwards in the game on $300k. Move along nothing to see here.
If that story is true and Hawkins really is taking only $300k out of their cap, then there needs to be a serious investigation into how he is REALLY being paid. I think the days of brown paper bags are over, but there are always new ways to cheat.

DeGoey won't happen unfortunately

IMO, Clark and Coffield are two players who if they get on the park and can maintain form will explode. I reckon they’re the type to be perfectly suited to finals like pressure. Saw a glimpse of that in 2020.

Just need more young top shelf mids to go with them. So would rather not trade these two out whilst their value is middling thanks to injury.

I think, as hard as it may, we just all need to have some patience. That’s the only way we’re going to construct a sustainable long-term competitive list.

Yep, Clark was named in our best in both of his finals appearances.

Just needs a bit of luck

Don’t trade Clark we are not going to get a top 10 pick. Unless he wants out but I’m not sure that’s the case.
Hill yes if we get a good pick if not then he stays. Despite his bad games he has talent.
Long hope he stays. Last game was a cracker. I’d prefer him forward.
The only stars coming through the door will be rom the draft.

I think Longs best position is half back to be honest, but with a fit Clark and Coffield it's not a need.

As a forward he provided good pressure but doesn't impact the scoreboard enough. He and Butler are probably fighting for the same spot.

Yep and imo Long brings something Butler doesn’t.
Give him an extended block forward.

Unless we sort out our midfield and game plan, most of the list decisions won’t matter, because the team will not be able to perform to it’s potential..

1. Midfield
Believe it or not, we need more grunt and contested ball winners.. reason why Crouch is a tackling machine now is that we’re always second to the ball, Gresham, Clarke, Jones will not be the contested ball pigs like Oliver, Dunkley.. so, we need to find 1-2 more.. 1. experienced e.g. Matt Crouch 2. Bruhn? or any other young pure mids we can shake out

2. Game plan
  • Set up the team to win the ball first.. when you’re defensive, you’re already on the back foot, unless you can get the ball back consistently which we can’t..
  • Only play players who can win their 1 on 1 duels, cannot afford to carry uncontested players, it puts too much pressure on others/midfield
  • Bring the flair back, run from behind to link up, break the line.. play fast (within reason), even if we make mistakes it will be much more exciting and entertaining than the dull long bomb down the line game style.
People laugh at Hawthorn’s run and gun game not yielding more wins that us, but they took it up to a lot of good sides with that exciting game style. As their young players develop, trade in better players, wins will come. Compared to our blue collar / labourous game style, where kicking a goal is so much hard work, I can see which style is more sustainable long term..

It isn’t about who can pay what.

It’s going to be about:

the pick on offer v Hills desire to go to North v Norths argument to eat salary to take him on and lessen the return we get.

We will say.
We want your priority pick (#19)

They say, we will pay all 900k and here is pick 51 (I think that’s what they have)

And on and on and on.

It will just come down to how concrete that agreement is between Clarko and Hill vs how genuine we are that we want him to stay.

If both are strong. We will get a good pick.

If both waiver. We will get two fifths of **** all
