We got pick 7 26 and 39 for one frdp. We would alway pick Clark at 7 so Coffield at 8 Long @ 26 Battle @ 39, how is that not a good return. Coff did a knee but still has great potential, Battle settled, Long gone but we got a good pick. Compared to what they paid for O'Meara, what the output was and now what they need to do to get rid of him, it was masterful.
We used to get good deals at the club when bains was there

Pretty disappointing career to be honest. He's not really a proper KP is the main problem. More a Mason Wood mobile athletic tall.
Unlike Mase, he’s big enough to chop-out ruck though…

It's now all back on the current list to improve. We aren't doing anything this trade period. A depth third tall back for a depth adaptable small forward/back who we are lighter on for seems a step sideways or slightly backwards.

Port should make a huge step forward, Collingwood, Geelong, Adelaide, even Melbourne seem to have stepped forward, Jackson has a higher ceiling but Grundy los a better current player. Tigers and Lions look much better. Adelaide look like they have seriously improved their talent pool too.

We look like we stand still and either step up internally or drop a few ladder spots. Hawks, WCE and GWS are looking like they will step backwards and be worse sides next year and North haven't really done enough to move out of the bottom 4.

I'd say our plan is to stop topping up and fall over a bit to load up in a couple of drafts and hopefully get it right next time...... Without really bothering chasing a gun recruiter still.
All of that is true. Really need for the young ones to step up, hopefully Hayes and Coff come back well from the knee, Lenny can toughen the mids, and we get a quality mid and a smokie @ 28 or 32.

Dont understand the bolded. Why do we need a new 'gun' recruiter if we are going to the draft and not recruiting anyone. Walsh should sort the wheat from the chaff but he isn't even in the chair yet.

Geez O'Meara is the gift that keeps giving for the Hawks. a late pick and Hawks pay ALL of O'Meara's salary.

FMD, Clarko the master. Meanwhile we have Battle and Coff, with an overs 32 for a fringe Long. But we never do anything right and all the other teams are always better :drunk::drunk:

They do have a bag of premierships to cry themselves to sleep at night at least. I'd swap them the last 15 years.....well the last 150 years actually.

I think we have realised that we screwed drafting in the last decade and want to drop away a bit to load up at the draft but we should get a gun recruiter if that's a plan. Toce is still a gamble on a guy who looks anecdotally better than Trout and Libba but we won't know until he takes over the reins.

I am talking about one trade, why do you have a need to shit on the club at every opportunity? It wasn't about premierships but one trade FFS

Yeah its pathetic that Gags didn’t give up our draft assets for superstars like Setterfield, Weideman & Acres

Or trade away our future & cause ourselves cap misery with desperate bids for Taranto, Hopper & Grundy.

Flaccid indeed.

Stick to mediocrity Bud,Premierships are won by risk takers and doers and unfortunately we are neither at the moment

Actually most Premierships are won by Clubs that nail their top end draft picks and get lucky with a few later ones ..... an innovative coaching strategy and player leadership are also big factors

It could have worked if we'd invested in recruiting and development staff. Melbourne did so much of their list build around this period as did Richmond and the Dogs. We got it mostly wrong and had an austerity policy that meant we didn't spend enough on development either. List management is also always ordinary.

My worry is that we have internally recruited our head recruiter again when it's the one position you can't afford to have a bad one.

He has worked under both Libba and Trout and I hope and have my fingers crossed that he is light years ahead of them.
Does anyone know if he is any good or any idea what he is thought of in the industry?

Getting a gun recruiter is easier said than done

Only way we possibly find one is to find our own.

No one will have any idea if he's actually any good until a few years time

He was our talent scout in SA. He was the guy that got us Cal Wilkie so that is a tick.

Or offer more money to lure one. What if we keep bringing in guys who don't get it right? I'd at least chase one with a good reputation in a good system. You'd feel more confident having someone who learnt under a gun.

Honestly though. He's spotted the best players in the best SANFL sides, he's picking on a much more easy level. The kids in the draft are much more about spotting special traits that might be signs for the future. It's actually really had and not something just anyone can do.
