Because he's proven not to be an AFL Forward ????? ......we've got form, Rutten and Billy "premiership player" Frampton

But he's not a proven AFL defender either, and he clearly has better/more form as a forward/ruck than as a defender.

If we wanted a defender to replace Borlase we should... recruit a defender?

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I suspect that Burgess requesting a trade to us is more than likely a sign that we're out of the equation with Chol.

It's quite possible. However, we've been linked to Burgess for a long while, whereas the Chol interest is a bit more recent. They could be completely separate.

I doubt Chol comes here, anyway.

Did you think the same when we brought over someone like Hinge? Or recruited a mature aged Nick Murray? Burgess has shown enough at AFL level, is dominant at VFL level and is young enough to play a few more seasons. Perfect depth and obviously won’t cost any significant draft capital or salary.

He may not be needed at all, may end up surprising us and become best 22, there is no risk here.

Wasn't Murray 20 years old when we recruited him? Not sure when 20 became "mature aged"

My argument about Burgess comes from the fact that we don't have a lot of spare spots on our list this season so I just don't think we should be wasting a spot on our main list for a 28 year list clogger.

To me it just doesn't make a lot of sense from a list management perspective.

Failed forwards regularly become defenders .....COLL's Moore was a top 10 drafted fwd .....he failed, so was turned into a defender
Much easier running straight at the ball ......Burgess, hasn't the fwd running patterns in his game .....looks a defender to me

I think the club sees him as coverage at both ends, but our immediate need is in defense with Murray injured. There’s a chance he plays down forward too if a spot opens, is a great mark and set shot. All clubs have this type of player as depth, Collingwood ended up needing theirs in the biggest game of the season.

That's also a fair point !

You’re overstating our lack of list spots, a post before mine goes into that in more detail.

How ? Hately gone, mcpherson gone , mc adam , doodee, Eh and that ,s who we know about atm so 5 list spots and newchurch , brown borlase , bringing in burgess main list and tobi murray ssp or rookie list

On SM-G996B using BigFooty.com mobile app

Most of those players we moved on were on the rookie list.

Burgess is signed for 2024 so bringing him in means that he takes a spot on the main list.

How could Burgess not have forward running patterns if he's just kicked 60 goals a season in the VFL?

How do you know the Chol interest has only been a recent one?..

For all we know.. the Crows have known about the GWS interest in Himm for half this season (GWS have come out and said they have made enquiries into Himm since halfway through the year) and so the crows have been putting feelers out there for guys like Chol for a while now..

According to the media we were the first club to show interest in Chol..

This ! ......it's the VFL .....no pressure

The VFL is below the SANFL in quality

Say what, is that sarcasm or are you fair dinkum?

The VFL these days is far superior to the SANFL with 18 teams boasting AFL listed players vs 2 in the SANFL.

Take the GCS list for example. Chol,Burgess, Hollands to name a few would dominate in the SANFL. Even missing was GCS suns captain Jimmy Tsitsas who won the 2021 Magery medal here.

Yes ....18 teams loaded up with young drafted kids

Not so...Plenty of journey men running around with them that the next stop is SANF when no longer getting AFL games..

If this is the case why do the SANFL put so many restrictions on the Crows and Port when it comes finals time.

Maybe, but considering he's here to be a backup, I think it's a positive that he's a genuine swingman who can backup at both ends.

If we NEEDED him to be first 22,l I'd maybe feel different.

The restrictions by the SANFL are irrelevant .....just look at the score differentials in VFL matches this year ...some hugely lopsided games

Same issue as the Crows ....having to play every player on the list ...if you have 5 Rucks on your list, the VFL plays them all .....now multiply that by all the AFL stand-alone clubs & add the northern clubs, that have always been weaker leagues pre-VFL expansion

It's all pretty logical, when you break it down

For example Burgess would have played on Darcy Gardiner, Darragh Joyce and Jaxon Prior in his final against Brisbane where he kicked 4 goals
