Question for the experts: What's the knock on Reid?

Have seen his name everywhere from 5 to 20. If it really runs: Lalor, FOS, Draper, Langford, Smillie & Smith in the front 6 would Tauru + Reid be a pass mark?
Speed
Size
And how damaging he is.

No one can deny his decision making or class.

Reid compared to the other top prospects is his speed and size. Could easily translate and be a star like sheezel or could easily be like will Phillips. (Too slow for an afl midfield and not big enough) I think hel be a star tho that’s the bewty of an opinion.

Are we talking Nicky Dal / Nas sorta levels here?

Because I'm all for him getting 25-30 a game at 75% and carving teams up... I'm kinda warming up to him TBH

Grab Reid + Tauru/Allen/Sliding mid and I think we will be ok.

Cal saying that Murphy Reid at Port Adelaide's pick 13 "wouldn't be a slide"

:)

It’s crazy how recruiters look past genuinely good players because they fall in love with with other players traits. I’d be over the moon with Reid, for a midfield full of butchers he’s exactly what we need.

Lyon loves good ball users

I read somewhere recently that Reid tested really well at the Coates League preseason testing. Can anyone else confirm that?
From memory they posted the results and by and large they were positive across the board.

Twomey also canned Richmond to pick 2.

Weirdly linked the crows pick swapping.

Said the Roos had done a lot of work for people going in the teens.

I don't think I've ever tooted my own horn, but ITK status and all that...

North trading pick 2 for Adelaide Pick 4 and F3s.

Adelaide get in front of Carlton for FOS / Draper. North Melbourne get Tauru.

Reid wouldn't fix our ball use problems. He's an elite handballer but he isn't remotely a noticeably outstanding kick

If you draft Reid, you're hoping he becomes a mix of Sheezel and Neale - leveraging work rate, short kicking and stoppage craft with top-tier hands. You will never see him hitting 40m corridor bullets and you will never see him break a tackle and charge out the front of stoppage like a Lalor/FOS/Draper/Smillie/Allan/Travaglia*. What he can do is read the drop of the ball at stoppage and get on the run like Sheezel did at times this year, but it takes a breakdown in opposition structure to allow space for something like that to happen so you can't bank on him doing it as much as the others do. Sheezel also has +5cm on him so easier to break free with that added size

Imo our biggest problem in the midfield is a lack of burst and speed. Smillie/Langford/Reid do not fix that, so if we are to take a duo out of that group then its a waste in my book. I cannot see a world where in the modern game, you play Langford/Smillie + Reid + Pou + Clark/Dow + Windy. You'd be banking on Wilson and Garcia to become inside midfield stars with no margin for error

I might be wrong but, or I’m supporting my own agenda here but I can’t recall Twomey linking us to Allan yet?

Generally he’s on the money and to this point it’s been Smilie, Langford, Draper & Reid at our picks (provided Tauru goes to North)

If you look at the current draft, other outlets have linked us to Armstrong & Allan with Melbourne and West Coast with picks either side, or close to ours.

Could SOS and Gubby be leaking in the attempt that Melbourne reach for Armstrong first, and West Coast try and trade up for Allan?

I think a little bit of out of site out of mind. TT is one of the mst competitive in the draft and played at his best in the most important games. His champs were amazing. You are looking at attributes not just if he's played mifield before.

It is about picking best available, best recent example is Naz. We picked Naz because he was best available, he wasn;t a traditional mid. What is the obsession with picking a mid at the expense of potentially missing a better player.
Coz our midfield sucks

Allan isn't a priority for West Coast. They don't mind if he is unavailable

I don't know why Melbourne would want Armstrong so bad at 5 when worst case scenario they take Shanahan at 9

I’d disagree on the majority of this. I’d say our biggest issue is actually winning the ball in stoppage which is why our ruckman continually grabbed it, and slapped it on the boot most of the season.
I’d also say his ability to exit stoppage cleanly would hugely impact our ball use by putting in teammates into time and space.
Players who can create space at stoppage and generate momentum with ball in hand are critical.

If we can pair him with either of Langford or Smilie then we’re cooking with gas

The one everyone seems flat about is Travaglia, he could turn out to be similar to NWM.

Have a read of the below from pages 250 up until we pick NWN, hindsight is wonderful but majority were desperate for Hobbs or Gibcus.

Nas had a standout attribute which was his elite kicking - best in the draft.

I am a fan of Travaglia but he doesn't seem to have an attribute that you can bank on carrying him at AFL level. Also projected to be a mid so completely different position

Reid averaged 3.25 clearances per game in the Champs. Allan averaged 3.66 as a non-specialist mid. Tom Gross averaged 3 as a half forward. Jagga averaged almost 7

I wish someone would point me to a video where reid kicks the football forward and hits targets when referencing his disposal. I'm fine with his speed and lack of aggression/general chutzpa around the contest, it's his disposal that doesn't stack up. He constantly prefers to go the loopy link up handball path or crabby kick to the wing over progressing the football up the ground by foot. In finals, the handball bs won't cut it, and the crabby kick just gives afl defenses time to set up.

Where are the videos of this much mentioned elite disposal? (by foot)

However, if we can develop the forward kicking element of his game then I'd be ok with the pick, but as it stands he doesn't have it. Currently, Smillie is a better kick than reid
