He’s from WA

Yeah thanks (East Fremantle) Im having a shocker I looked up Matt Carroll on RMC. I deleted that post.

Its interesting in Misson's media release -

“We’re pleased to welcome Jack to the club,” EGM Football David Misson said.
“There was a lot to like in Jack’s performances this season and we believe he can bring an added layer to our midfield mix.
“Jack’s got great leg-speed and at only 21 we believe his best footy is still ahead of him.”

So we see him as a midfielder which makes more sense.

RMC DRAFT ANALYSIS: "Carroll is a versatile midfield option with neat skills, shrewd decision making, and a strong athletic base - all of which drive his ceiling high." - Michael Alvaro

If we draft a mid at 7. then trade pick 8 for 2 picks (1 mid Hynes? 1 key position Whitlock?). Then makes perfect sense.

Is Carrol another Paddy Dow? Because Paddy was quite underwhelming

Paddy didn't have a decent preseason, once he got a block of games at the end of the seasons he was pretty good.

DFA think of the Mason Wood success.

Anyone know much about Carrol. His stats are underwhelming?

Thought we’d go for depth ruck/backman with a DFA.
Looked good early in the year.

Stats are underwhelming but he was the sub in 7 matches this year and he was subbed off in other games.

His VFL numbers are good and on an upward trend

So no Langford in the draft by the looks. Big bodied left footed mid has been filled.

Personally I dont think we can ever have too many left footers, but it does raise some questions over who we could or might not be targetting at the draft. If we rate Jack highly enough we might be more likely to split pick #8, time will tell.

He comes from that 2020 draft class which was destroyed by Covid, so it would have been difficult for recruiters over that period. Lets remember Dalrymple would have been involved in his recruitment to the Saints, as he was with Chad Warner in 2020.

Here is what Callum Twomey said about him in his pre-draft phantom, he had him rated at pick #21-

JACK CARROLL

POS: Midfielder
Ht 187cm, Wt 79kg, DOB 20/12/02
From East Fremantle/Western Australia

There are plenty of clubs who are fans of Carroll, with the talented West Australia turning heads with his decision making ability and capacity to dodge and weave through traffic. The midfielder is adept at winning his own disposals – noted by his place atop the colts' competition's contested disposal count – but also can get into space. At his height he also offers a bigger presence than some others around his mark in the pool.

Been a while since Bont and McRae played in the same midfield. The increase speed in the game put a stop to that.

So one current example and I would question how often Fin is playing big minutes in the middle.

We can’t push either forward very often with Owens already stationed there permanently as a mid size forward. He gets in Kings way enough without adding more marking options up there instead of genuine smalls. They would need to be spending good minutes on the wing and off half back if they aren’t both playing bulk midfield time.
Which is why I don't think we'll get Langford in the end

Cue all the comments about SOS and ex-Carlton players in 3, 2, 1 ...

Though in this case SOS departed his role as list manager on 4 December 2019, and Carroll was drafted in the 2020 Draft.

So it looks like we have restocked on our quota of lots of Jacks now!

Playing Height: 188cm Playing Weight: 83kg Position: Midfield, Forward
Drafted: Round 2, Pick #41 2020 National Draft by Carlton Blues

STEAL — Jack Carroll (Pick 41, Carlton)

Not just any ordinary slider. The biggest slider of the night — and by quite some margin.

A classy midfielder with agility, great evasion skills and clean ball use, Carroll was rated among the top 20 players in foxfooty.com.au’s power rankings.

After a full season of WAFL Colts footy, Carroll has lifted his prospects, averaged 23.1 disposals and using it reasonably well off his left boot.

“Absolute steal. In my opinion he’s the steal of the draft so far,” Ablett said.

“Absolutely elite in the way he prepares himself.

“I’ve seen him play as an intercept defender and counter-attacker, I’ve seen him in the midfield with quality inside ball -inning traits and then he goes forward and kicks goals.

“Carlton have got an absolute steal.”

Sheehan said he was surprised Carroll was still on the board at pick 41.

“Good speed and game sense, I even liken him to a bit of Josh Kelly, a left-footer that gets out of traffic pretty easily,” Sheehan said.

“What we’ve seen we really have liked. No one can lay a glove on them and to see him go at this point – he could’ve gone at 20 in some club’s views.”

Strange to burn a list spot now... could have waited & picked him up post draft if we don't like anyone who's available late in the piece.

Not to mention that we have more pressing needs for mature back ups than a delisted midfielder.
I would have thought he had other interest and that’s what we had to do to secure him.

Carrol averaged 27 touches over 8 full vfl games this year.
Great Job Reaction GIF

After the first half of the season Josh Smillie was flying high as most people's pick 1 favourite due to his massive frame, slick movement in traffic, clean hands, penetrating boot and ability to consistently hit the scoreboard. After a quieter than anticipated champs series Smillie lost some form through the back half of the season which has seen him slide down the boards. If his early season play is more indicative of what we can expect from Josh in the future then a team picking him in the middle or back end of the top 10 will be getting a bargain.

Rekon he gets the #18 near Dow & Stocker. Good luck to him.

Does this change the plans for 7+8 now?

The slide back feeling more & more likely...
