Carroll coming in perhaps puts a different complexion on our draft choices. Key position players into the mix at a higher pick? And of course it depends on who is there at our picks. And if a club comes hard for our Pick 8. Can’t imagine we would contemplate giving up No 7. But….you never say never.

Going to be completely fascinating. Too many scenarios to calculate what might happen. Live trading and pick swaps might make phantom drafts way off the mark. Cal might have to put out a couple of phantoms to take into account a change of order.

I have seen nearly every player at the supposed top end of the draft drop to our picks 7 and 8 by someone. Except FOS. Or the FS or Academy boys. And then guys rated in the teens. Not sure there has been a draft like it. And certainly not with us in the heart of it.

Just on FOS. Impossible to think he would drop to us. But is he a bit injury prone? Is that bust potential? Smillie too if it comes to that. He struggled a bit for a while.

I know there are famous examples of kids being injured in the draft year but being superstars. Judd probably the best known.

I don’t wish any of these kids harm. But recruiters have a lot to consider. Every pick is a kind of gamble.

Wow I said I rated him when he was delisted, so not unhappy with picking him up. He has more midfield scope than what Carlton gave him credit for and he has some speed and a deadly left foot, something we crave. Its going to make the list spots and how we fill positions even more interesting! How many JACK's will that make at the club? :D

It will make the idea of taking Elwood Peckett more remote perhaps?

I was a fan. Very surprised he was delisted. Thought he was going back to WA?

After the first half of the season Josh Smillie was flying high as most people's pick 1 favourite due to his massive frame, slick movement in traffic, clean hands, penetrating boot and ability to consistently hit the scoreboard. After a quieter than anticipated champs series Smillie lost some form through the back half of the season which has seen him slide down the boards. If his early season play is more indicative of what we can expect from Josh in the future then a team picking him in the middle or back end of the top 10 will be getting a bargain.

100% yes please

Why did Carlton delist Carroll? Can’t say I’m overly thrilled in losing a list spot to use at the draft. Unless we are about to create an extra list spot with the retirement of Crouch.

Others will know more than me if Carroll has much upside. But he isn’t the bursting line breaking midfielder we are craving. He played 15 games this year and was the sub in 7 of them. He hardly set the world on fire.

I’m scratching my head at this one. Despite the fact the lad is only 21, he has been in the system for 4 years. We also have Paddy Dow from Carlton and do both really improve our midfield much or are they just depth? If the latter then I’d rather take a punt on the draft.

We have 7, 8, 32 and 47. We must keep 47 to match bids for Cole and Hoffmann.

Trading-up would make sense now (if possible) because it seems as if we will be only using 3 draft picks at the selection table. Splitting pick 8 for multiple picks seems less attractive now. But maybe I’m wrong.

POLL:

Overlooking the benefit of NGA selections, IF we had a pick between 32 & 47 or were to use them on a key defender who would you take or prefer?

A. James Barrat 194cms (intercept marker)
B. Matt Whitlock 198cms (utility)
C. Noah Mraz 198cms (utility)
D. Adrian Cole 194cms (full back stopper)
E. Harry O'Farrell 196cms (full back stopper)
F. Clancy Dennis 195cms (intercept marker)
G.Charlie Nicholls 197cms (utility)

I know its a fruitless exercise as we will take Cole because of our academy access, but if he wasnt who would you take? Its a bit of fun to get us thinking about something other than the top 8.

My pick would be C. Noah Mraz, because of his all round defensive game and versatility. I think if he hadnt of have had the foot injury he would be top 20, even so he tested well at the combine. Perhaps we might look at someone versatile like Mraz or Nicholls at #32 as well given their versatility, as well as taking Cole.
Love Barrat. Think we should take another than Cole and 32 would be a good spot for some of these. We will have two late 20s defenders, 1 GOP at best in Cordy, probably another one that’s a DFA, and not much else. Would be interested if our guys think that some of the other forwards can play back

Because they are getting FOS/Draper/Jagga + Camporeale + Camporeale and they brought in Cooper Lord via the mid-season draft. Elijah Hollands last off-season. Their midfield is stacked with youngsters so a couple had to go (Carroll + Kennedy)

He isn't line breaking but he has good lateral movement, breaks tackles and most importantly is a beautiful kick. He addresses the ball use/class side of thingss

Makes Draper so much more appealing to us now at pick 7

He was played mostly as a pressure HFF when he got a game at AFL level. Have a look at his VFL stats there has been an upward trend, even so he is an interesting pick up given our list holes, but he is definitely an upgrade on Olli Hotton.

Ill also add his RMC draft write up -

Sounds like Dangerfield and Bont based on that 🤣🤣

Maybe you’re right. But list spots are at a premium for us. Maybe we have made the calculation that Carroll is better than what we will extract from the draft.

I dunno though. I’m not an expert and just a passionate supporter. But he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire over the previous 4 years.

Carroll could be a hidden gem. I hope so. But I’m a doubter.

God I hope a couple of rippers slide to us at picks 7 & 8.

Reckon a good way of thinking about it as someone else posted is he's an upgrade on Hotton and similar age.

He hasn't had opportunity at Carlton. Dominated VFL and was solid at AFL level but never got the chance to put together consistent blocks of high-level performance

I have a strong feeling we're gonna do something crazy come draft night

21 games in 3 years including 15 this year.

HEY MELBOURNE, we've just grabbed yet another midfielder. We are so totally going to use pick 8 on Armstrong now, and pick 8 is the pick before your pick where you thought you were getting Armstrong.

Best you select him at 5 guys, that will really, really, really throw our plans into disarray.

HEY NORTH MELBOURNE we have just grabbed another mid. As we just convinced MELBOURNE to take Armstrong at pick 5. So we will be now taking Tauru at 8.

Best you select him at 2 guys to make sure, or here's an idea take 8 and F1 for 2 and we won't take Tauru at 7. Only Melbourne were a chance to select him before our picks.

BTW don't tell MELBOURNE we are talking to you.

Herald Sun

- St Kilda NGA member Adrian Cole is considered likely to attract a bid in the late 30s or early 40s, after St Kilda’s third selection which currently stands at No. 32.

- Another St Kilda NGA member, defender Lennox Hofmann, is expected to receive a bid later in the draft
I feel like most us on here are sleeping on cole. If he attracts a bid in the late 30’s in what’s deemed as a deep super draft that’s huge.

Could well have been an early second rounder in previous years.

watched him in the grand final and was pretty impressed.

we could well have a very solid full back on our hands for the next 10 years.

Was he ? average at best imo
Yeah, I am looking how he linked up with Steele, Clark, Jones and Pou when they all got blocks of games. He looked ok and was a good fit in that last two months.
With Macrae, Carroll, two new mids, Windy, Pou, Hall all after a gig, he, like, Clark, like Jones needs to step up big time or he is out.

No one is sleeping on Cole, except maybe one guy here... We just don't talk about him because he's all but a lock to be a Saint on November 21
