I just watched the round 15 VFL game of Carlton v GWS, Jack Carroll had 32 disposals. The first thing I will say is he is not the player I thought he was.

The next thing is I really dont see what our club have seen in him! He is not an inside or contested clearance mid, he is an outside skinny kid who has a nice kick and is quick in a straight line but his game in close is restricted.

Perhaps he might be ok on a wing or HBF, but I wouldnt have picked him up thinking he will become an AFL midfielder. Given the strength of the draft he is a really odd selection IMO.

Why did Carlton delist Carroll? Can’t say I’m overly thrilled in losing a list spot to use at the draft. Unless we are about to create an extra list spot with the retirement of Crouch.

Others will know more than me if Carroll has much upside. But he isn’t the bursting line breaking midfielder we are craving. He played 15 games this year and was the sub in 7 of them. He hardly set the world on fire.

I’m scratching my head at this one. Despite the fact the lad is only 21, he has been in the system for 4 years. We also have Paddy Dow from Carlton and do both really improve our midfield much or are they just depth? If the latter then I’d rather take a punt on the draft.

We have 7, 8, 32 and 47. We must keep 47 to match bids for Cole and Hoffmann.

Trading-up would make sense now (if possible) because it seems as if we will be only using 3 draft picks at the selection table. Splitting pick 8 for multiple picks seems less attractive now. But maybe I’m wrong.

It's just depth with some potential up side. We've cut a lot of players so it's a reasonable get and probably better than that guy from Norff.

Do you see an additional tall forward linked anywhere else?

There have been genuine links to Armstrong. INCLUDING Mission saying we aren’t guaranteed to take 2 Non Talls
Firstly all clubs project outwardly that they are keeping options open. It allows trades of picks. This is where North f$%&ed up by telegraphing their love of Tauru... now everyone is forcing them to use 2 on Tauru by refusing to trade up and also by trolling them that they will take him.. which they may or may not

Secondly, the comment may apply to TAURU... we may rate him

Thirdly, we may not intend to take a tall, but we may be trying to ensure that North take him in the top 6 picks and dont trade down to 10.. he may be available at 10 but like all clubs at the top we dont want North to know that!

Fair enough, might have been a bit harsh, however there are at least 6 mids that have been rated in the top three, with
Lalor
FOS
Smillie
Jagga Smith
Draper
Langford.
One or two of Tauru or Armstrong will get taken before our picks.
Then there are the likes of Allan, Reid, Travalgia, Lindsay etc.

I very much doubt we get pick 2. Maybe 7 and F1 on draft night if North are confident they can get Tauru, but unlikely so best case scenario would be
1) two mids at 7 and 8 from the first 6 rated mids
2) take the best mid at 7, trade 8 to GWS for 15 and 16, take a slider mid and a tall.

My view on this draft is that within the top 10 there are 3 tiers. I have Lalor, Fos, Draper, Ashcroft, and Lombard at the top. Then Smith and Smillie and Tauru in the next. Then Langford/Allan/Kako at tier 3. IMO, if we can get to 2 and get a FOS or Draper we'd be stupid not to. Then with pick 8 i'd love to get a cooper Hynes in and we can probably get him with a pick in the teens so I think we need to split so that we can get Hynes and another mid or Shanahan as the cherry on top. You might not agree but I don't know if a draper or smith slides to us, if they did I'm ecstatic to keep 7.

certainly in interesting assessment.

I get the feeling Hynes will go earlier than many phantoms seem to suggest.. it seems a few clubs like him

I find this interesting from when Jack was delisted....

“Jack leaves the football club with lifelong friendships, which is a testament to the positive contribution he made to the group during his four seasons with us and we wish him well for the next opportunity in his career,” Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said.

To me, the wording sounds like a delisting similar to what we did for Tim.

Tarkyn O’Leary has signed for Frankston as well. Genuinely might not field a team in the VFL next year.
maybe we are getting rid of all of them(encouraging them to leave)so we dont have to take any of them, maybe watson doesnt plan to nominate, hence we keep him,if noone to list its not our fault putting back the agreement another year

Where's the news we are keen for Armstrong?

Ross has said mids mids mids, unless Dalrympal sees him as Curnow, no pls no

Really don;t trust SOS.
I don't trust SOS either. That's why l look at his body of work which consists of 2 lists that just played off in finals. More recently excising basically every Saints player that should have been and overseeing what we think is the best draft haul we've had in the last 2 AFL generations.
I also don't trust anyone at the club FWIW.

Not super stoked on the Armstrong chatter on here. Someone suggested splitting 8 for two later picks, would prefer that also if we only have 1 of the top mids to choose from at 7 & 8. If I had the choice of a) Armstrong for pick 8 or b) trade 8 & 32 for 15, 16 and 37 I'd go option b.

Should be at least 1 or 2 of Lindsay, Shanahan, Hynes, Trainor, Allan, Whitlock at 15/16. Would prefer 2 of them as opposed to just Armstrong.

I can understand that mistrust runs deep as we have been let down continuously by List & Recruiting Managers over our history, its criminal really.

I do however think our player identification and recruiting has improved no end over the past few years. The current list management team have done nothing but pull the right levers since they have been at the club, so Im being optimistic about the coming draft.

After realising who Jack Carroll actually was, I am not that excited about his signing. I will however give him and the club time to show us they made the right call.

Exactly. We can only judge through the lens of time.

He is not an outside mid. Oliver hollands is an outside mid, so is Acres. Looks like an inside/outside combo mid to me.. seems composed, can get out of trouble in congestion, has a nice side step and can take the game on rather than just chip side ways like a lot of our mids.
